Salary Cap and TPA's

Why have TPA's exempt from the salary cap? It seems TPA's are causing the much grief and I don't really think they are fair.

If the sole purpose of the salary cap is to ensure an even competition then TPA's defeat the purpose because some clubs can arrange them and others can't. But the aims of the salary cap are two fold; to ensure competition is even and to ensure players are not being paid more than the game can afford.

If the TPA's are seen as a way of getting more money into the game without the clubs sending themselves broke by paying players more than they can afford then they have some legitimacy ie. as a way of retaining marquee players that would otherwise be lost to the game.

But if they are impossible to police and not evenly available to all clubs then they counteract the main purpose of the cap (to ensure a fair and even competition). And let's face it Brisbane have had a huge advantage with TPA's given the amount of commerce in their catchment compared to the Sydney clubs who are competing for the same $$.

I would rather see the NRL retain a fighting fund that each club has equal access to. This fund could be drawn each year or saved, and the clubs could either decide to use it or not depending on the availability of a marquee player. The NRL would have to apply strict criteria to this as you would want to see it wasted on say a Blake Ferguson, it would need to be spent on someone who has the ability to grow the game.

Probably heaps of holes in this argument….but just some thoughts of the top of my head without deep thought.

Larry, the way I see it, the NRL has to control any and all TPA's. They can nominate to go into a TPA pool.

That way all TPA sponsors can have their "brand" advertised for and by the NRL. ATM they can't be seen to be associated in any way to a club but they could associate their brand to the NRL itself.

It could be controlled by the way of the NRL saying "your TPA will go to club A", if the sponsor says "no, not that club" then the sponsor is disqualified from the pool.

CQ - that is almost a draft for Third Party Sponsors.

Don't like that idea myself for players or sponsors.

Better to have no TPA at all.IMHO
