Salford Reds gunning for Gentle

The UK's Daily Star reports that Salford are close to making Peter Gentle their new coach. The Reds want the relatively unknown Wests Tigers assistant coach to take over straight away to try and secure a play-off spot, after they were turned down by South Sydney’s No.2 Kurt Wrigley. But Gentle is likely to wait till the end of the campaign to coincide with preparations for Salford’s move to a new stadium next season

Geez if he goes thats Gentle and Folkes gone from the coaching ranks for next season. will need to fill those 2 positions with some quality as those 2 are very good operators.

This is potentially the best thing that could happen for the Tigers Long Term.

If Peter Gentle goes at Season end, Spends a few years and does OK in the UK, He would be the perfect man to take over from Tim Sheens at the appointed time.

Just dont leave now IMO.

Good Luck PG.

I reckon Elliot and Sheens would make a good combo…after each game they could ask each other "why did we do this"

Hmm well I have advocated that we need some changes in the ranks, didn't think it was going to be the loss of Gentle and Folkes.

Might open up the door for Payten?

Would be good to get a complete outsider to come in as well with some new ideas.

Payten will be on Sheens coaching team next year but doubt he would be assistant, to close to the current crop of players

Salford chairman John Wilkinson is meeting Peter Gentle in Sydney as Reds look to conclude their search for a new head coach.

Gentle, the assistant coach of the West Tigers, is a leading contender to replace Shaun McRae.
>
Gentle has already held preliminary talks with Reds football director Steve Simms. He has made it perfectly clear he wants to become a head coach and he is keen to leave Australia and work in Super League.
>
Wests have offered Gentle a new three-year contract but have said they will not stand in his way if the opportunity to become the new Salford coach materialises.

Chairman Wilkinson will decide who replaces McRae.

If Reds look beyond Gentle, John Kear and Ian Millward could be back in the frame once Reds return from Australia.
