good to see that Slammin Sam's shoulder is fine while carrying that young lady on his shoulders while partying in Mexico.....

Way to throw a 3.whatever million dollar spanner in the works.....

What’s he going to do with himself if he retires?

Make a boxing career which starts from fighting Gallen

Re your "my sympathies are with his wife not with him" @jadtiger: why is that.
I'm not saying you are wrong, but do you know BOTH sides of the story  fully?
Have a great day jad :fa-smile-o: :christmas_tree: :snowman_without_snow: :santa:

It's all a bit vague. If he retires and he doesn't get paid, then all is fine
If Souths pay him out for the balance of his career, it's a super dodgy area and one the NRL need to clearly identify the rules on. The whole situation around pre-existing conditions v new injuries is open to all sort of interpretation leading to inconsistencies that supporters can blow up about

The rules are actually clear.

If the retirement occurs from an injury after your contract you can claim.

If it was there before you signed someone, you cannot.

Burgess got an infection a few months ago, so that is reasonably clear.

Our issue with Ben is whether he had those injuries before he signed (and wear and tear made them worse)

Don't know about wear and tear - could be an infection, if not I am sure we can give him one.

For the life of me I can't figure out why players don't also take out insurance to cover themselves if injured and have to quit game. Self employed tradies and many others do. Why is it always the clubs that have the battle? Let the players themselves take out some insurance and pay it themselves as a back up to when clubs get caught in a situation like matulinos.

They do have that via the clubs.

If medically retired, the insurer pays all the remaining money.

That is why they need to prove it so extensively.

Crystal, but thanks anyway

G'day @happy_tiger: re your "staph infection". My eldest brother had a staph infection in his left hip due to having a pain-killing cortisone injection prior to that. His infection level rose to approx 400 and really is Very Lucky to still be here today.

The infection was so bad it ate away some of the hip bone which meant he needed a hip replacement 15 months later. :santa: :snowman: :cherries: :christmas_tree:

@ElleryHanley yes, but the clubs are paying it. The players should also take out something like a income protection policy out of their own pocket, not just rely on the clubs and their battles or otherwise with seeking medical retirement.

I’m going to make a bold (and maybe alarmist) statement:
I think Sam burgess will really struggle as he moves into retirement.
Reasons:
1. Forced retirement, maybe years before he had planned
2. His personal life seems to be in a shambles
3. He seems emotionally immature
Now I don’t know and I’m hugely speculating and I sincerely hope I’m incorrect.
I’m saying this because our game can spit young men (he is only 30) out the back of the machine with little regard to their ability to cope. Finch is an example.
He will go from adored and celebrated to largely ignored. Is he mentally mature enough to cope with that?
Just a thought.

@Tiger_Steve The net worth of at least a couple of million dollars should help him. May not be so much though after the Mrs cleans him out if she becomes his ex.

You have a good point though, he may not have enough that he'd never have to work again. A lot of players don't, that's why they do the education, get degrees and such, but that's not everyone's cup of tea.

I feel worse for guys like (apologies for saying it) Tuiaki and Dwyer. Guys that could have gone a lot further and earned a lot more, had it taken away, and then got spit out.

I think he'll struggle too, surely we won't be hearing him mumble his way through sentences on some NRL show.

Yeah I agree. Tuiaki and Dwyer are tragic stories. But for all his success I reckon Sam is I’ll prepared for what lies ahead

Justin Hodges got a job so I reckon Sam will if he hangs around in Oz. Great player but gee he turned grubby,

Hodges got a job because he had Queensland appeal. Not sure about Sam. Most Souths supporters don’t own a tv and those that do can’t work out how to turn it on!

BREAKING NEWS: Sam Burgess has been Charged with Assault. Todd Greenberg has announced that "The DUI test results after Mad Monday are no longer required for the South Sydney Medical Retirement Cap reduction as this charge is clearly more in line with becoming an Ornament to the Game. I have therefore provided the NRL Immortals Committee with my Reference for Sam and look forward to him becoming the 1st Pom in that Category. Meanwhile, the position of my Personal Bodyguard will be announced on Friday Nov 1st."".

Retired just in time with full verbal commitment of being paid in full and removed from the salary cap. Nice work.

@Tiger_Steve 100%

I was saying the same thing to my friend the other day.
Guys lost everything he loves.

Maybe he can head home to the UK and coach?
