Sandhills prove to be a mental battle

The sheer thought of climbing the gruelling Wanda Sandhills is enough to make any league player weak at the knees as the Wests Tigers found out recently.

Experienced NRL players, hardened NSW Cup men, to exciting NYC players were split into groups for another three hour session under the eye of NRL Coach Mick Potter and his conditioning team.

Players underwent wrestling and boxing drills, short sprints, to the painful ‘Mexican’ run consisting of two hill climbs – one being very steep.

Wests Tigers NRL Strength and Conditioning Coach John Skandalis said it was no place for the faint hearted.

“It is 40 per cent physical and 60 per cent mental. It is just so hard and the players really do feel the
mental side of it,’’ Skandalis said.

“Some of the blokes who impressed me with their running were Marika Koroibete, Liam Fulton and Andy Fiagatusa. Marika started off slowly in a group at the back but then worked his way through to get to the front. It is not an easy thing to do running in such heavy sand.”

Premiership winning Wests Tigers NYC Coach Todd Payten said the sandhills challenges players in so many ways.

“It is not so much the physical side of it. The first thing that goes is your mind. Your legs are burning and you have the coaching staff screaming at you to keep going,’’ Payten said.

‘You quickly find out who likes to lead from the front and who gives in easily. It is also about mateship and not letting the guys in your group down at any stage. That’s the way it should be.”

Loving the Hard work - This is the edge that we have been lacking for so many years.

Keep up the pressure and the punishment Mr Potter

Nice to see the sand hill story again, hope it works better than last years sand hill efforts.

I'm loving Mr Potter's don't care who you are, or what you've done before, you need to prove it to me approach. I am so excited about 2013, can't wait.

Guys , the guys did the same sandhills last season

Can't vouch for the intensity , but Skando would of pushed them hard last season as well you would of thought

We need them to by 90% mentally tough , thats what wins the tight football games

Last season we were .9% mentally tough on a good day

as long as we dont turn into lite weights again , the big boppers need some weight , we looked week and thin last season blair looked 5 kg less than his melbourne days , skando himself looked to lite

every team from NRL to the parks does the Wanda Sandhills…..

like last year (and every year) every club this year has never trained harder, never been fitter, never been stronger

I occasionally get stuck in the office at work, much prefer the outdoor work, but gee I'm loving the air conditioned office even more today.

the real indication of change will be evident if Potter drops that stupid 'iron man' circus challenge that Skando runs every year so maybe we don't look like clowns half through the season

Looks like Robbie's been in a good paddock on his end of year trip and after the year from hell the poor bloke has had to endure, who could blame him for letting his hair down. Even with the extra weight he seems to be carrying, the champion is still leading the way. You da man Robbie :righton:

My bad,
I was aware that we had to give the author credit when posting story's from WT's but I didn't realise that it was for photo's as well. Won't happen again and I'll give myself a self imposed 10 in the bin : )

I remember Lincoln Port getting massive raps in the iron man challenge last year for being able to run very very fast carrying a beer keg, and everyone getting all hot & bothered over that

You have to be mentally tough during the games. Training and prep is key but when I see our blokes NOT give up during a game I will be more impressed
