Save Our Sides Protest Rally - SUN 05FEB11

This would be an ideal time for Wests Tigers to set up a 4 year Scholarship program for kids from Campbelltown. Firstly arranging accomodation for them close to Concord and then set up Apprenticeships/Traineeships and University courses for them.

I know they have to move away from their families but this gives them the opportunity to concentrate on Footy with F/A travel time and at the very worst they have a qualification to head home with if they haven't made the big time in the NRL.

Why waste St Gregs?

@Blackandwhite said:
No I think all the Campbelltown/Group 6 kids just love traveling to Concord in peak hour traffic rather than a nice country drive to Penrith or Wollongong or going next door to Canterbury.

This is a weak weak argument.
If you want it hard enough you make sacrifices.
I know of Balmain Matts players living west of Parra travelling to Balmain district to play and train each week LO to train for their club and rep teams.

Are you involved in Wests JRL Blackandwhite???
Ive asked you several times on the other forum, you dont like to answer?

When all is said and dusted, I would like to know under what circumstances, or better yet, what obligations, the Wests Tigers and Wests Magpies, or whoever else is going to cop the brunt of a few disgruntled fans spitting the dummy, have in regards to actually giving in to these demands?

Do they have to listen to these demands? Probably
Are they legally obligated to give into these demands? I think not

Some clubs are better others at enforcing the work or study thing, my point was that the intention is there for the NRL to make it known to the kids in the NYC that for most it is not their career.

From what i have heard, the whole thing of NYC players having to either study or work is an exaggeration on the NRL's part

They do work or study, Not sure what you mean mate ?

I mean from what i have heard, the NRL aren't as strict on the work and study rule as they make out. Not saying that players don't, but it isn't the neccessity the NRL have us believe. I'll be happy to stand corrected on this as i'm no expert. I'm just going off my cousin's boyfriend who captained the Sharks NYC side

Are said kids "Good Enough" to make it in the first place B&W
Chris Lawrence is one in a million….
I think if local kids are good enough, And aren't prepared to do the hard yards...
Then they don't want it enough, If they don't want it enough.... Then why would we want them.
Take young Matty G for example, He's MILES away from his family, Has been since he was young...
Now he's just out of Juniors still young enough to play 20's and will probably spend most of the year
in 1sts.
If he can do it, About 8 hrs from home.... Surely the Kids from the West can do it 1hr from home??

I don't know how to say this, but lets just say some kids with overseas backgrounds from Campbelltown are not prepared to do the hard yards.
Example 2 Wests SG Ball kids got called up to train with the NRL team this off season. One has done the hard yards including the travelling and is looking at getting a run in the top grade this year because he is focused and determined to reach his goals.
The other bloke didn't turn up for the 1st training session and has a bit of a history of going missing. His training with the NYC.

I hear what you are saying Blackandwhite but you can only present opportunities. If people decide to squander them that is there own failing. Sometimes it takes alot for some guys to wake up to themselves

Tedesco is the golden child, and rightly so, I know he's really put in at training and should be rewarded. Was Nofoaluma the one who went AWOL then?

I had to ask Galahs 4 times what connection he had with Magpies NSW State Cup team before he revealed he was connected to to them.

Willow that was my guess as well, disapointing, he seems to have talent, he also ruled himself out of the national schoolboys carnival.

Does anyone know how many scholarships the WT's provide at Gregs, also how much they contributed to the footy program.

Black and white , i just realized that your opinion has absolutely no value. What has an " overseas background " got to do with anything being discussed on this forum .

I would appreciate it if the mods would edit that post , as it is based on , and feeds negative ,stereotypes. That is regardless of how ambiguous the author may think it is .

TBF it is understandable people not wanting to reveal their connections.

Particularly if they are inside the club.

Honestly I would hardly call a voluteer as "connected"

If we are talking within Wests Tigers circles I can see your point Smeg but when you're talking about a club who claim to be running on a limited budget leads me to believe that the majority who help run that club would be volunteers. Under those pretenses, I think being referred to as "connected" IMO, is a suitable for this situation.

Maybe. I just don't care for the unintentional connotation that connected can take on in this circumstance

You really believe all that? You seriously think a kid signing with an NRL team and fulfilling his dream is going to say no because he has to travel to Concord???? Fair dinkum… :unamused:
If you have to think about whether you can be bothered to make that trip you should probably forget NRL and sign for East Campbelltown there and then.
I never thought I'd see the day when St George-Illawarra is given as a good example of a JV...

No I think all the Campbelltown/Group 6 kids just love traveling to Concord in peak hour traffic rather than a nice country drive to Penrith or Wollongong or going next door to Canterbury.

Yes St. George-Illawarra are pretty stupid Imagine thinking you could win a comp with a bunch of locals.
Cooper, Creagh, Green, Hornby, Hunt, Morris, Young, Merrin, Prior, Rein. Nah never going to happen !

You misunderstand my argument. I never said St Geo-Ill weren't successful, just they're hardly what I call a 50/50 JV - it's St George with a pair of red socks.

Apart from Canterbury all those places are very similar distances. But seriously who gets an NYC offer and knocks it back because it's a 5-10 minutes longer drive. And let's say they have no car. Long train trip to the Gong or Penrith… You guys have some decent arguments but this isn't one of them. Besides by that logic we'd miss out on all the Balmain guys who'd presumably go to the Roosters or Souths etc

Why waste St Gregs (here we go again)

Innsaneink, the amount of 17 year olds who play 20's in minimal and I hardly think that an 18 yr old in their final year of School would opt to change schools. If WT recruited a 17 yr old kid from the country or out of district who was starting yr 12 then they would have the option to either travel to training from St Gregs or go to Holy Cross with the option of a Scholarship with Pathways at either school where they do year 12 over 2 years.

C'mon Ink you must admit it is a great idea Especially giving the youngsters the choice of schools and then a future whether they play 200 games for the Tigers or none

The club will know they have done their part

This is where the Broncos in particular lead the rest of the clubs and this will always be part of Bennetts legacy

As he puts it "they will join the club as boys and will leave the club as men that we and they can be proud of"

Spot on Yoss. Penriff or Wollongong is a train ride that requires changing trains twice from Campbelltown, and I believe it's well over two hours to Wollongong from Campbelltown and about 75 mins from Penriff (if you catch a mountains train from Blacktown to Penriff, otherwise it's longer again.)

Mate I don't know what you are trying to prove?

I hold no title with the Wests Magpies, I just help out where I can. So what?

What do you do to help your team out? Nothing? Flap your gums?
