Good video on NRL.com by Anthony Seibold.

The main point in that is that gold standard defence is all about inside pressure from the 4 in defender or the middle forwards.

Interestingly he pointed out Tiger's structure and how he was impressed by it, especially pointing out Mbye's decision making skills when the structure breaks.

Let's hope we build on that for the rest of the year.

LOL, I've always been supportive of Mbye.

When Mbye was playing center his defence was great and he nearly had me convinced that center was his future position.

If BJ keeps stuffing up wouldn’t hesitate and put Mbye in over BJ.

yep 100%

I still think 5/8 is Mbye's best position. The trouble is his kicking game has sufferred since he hasn't played in that position for 5 years. Same with Douehi, he can do those magical bombs but his kicking won't be amazing as he hasn't done regular kicking in top grade.

thought he was way more solid at 5/8th then he had shown at FB or Centre.
Wasn't ultra creative but played second fiddle too brooks.

Its not his fault he is overpaid. If he was on ~300k less he would probably be a lock in everyones team.

Just a pity Seibold can't put what he preaches into action .....

True, that is the real skill is, getting the message across.
Is it true that the Broncos under Siebs had an NFL style play book. With a different play from each section of the field?

Like Jason Taylor

But JT didn't ever blow his tires up like Seibold has and was quarter the price tag .....if you didn't like Taylor Ball ....your not a WT's fan

Mbye's eternal problem - doesn't excel in any one position where we don't have a superior option. His defence is always decent, he's fast, he makes 1-1 tackles. He just hasn't been able to claim a position long-term as his own.

I actually think Mbye is a pretty decent fullback, but I also think Daine Laurie has shown more ability in 2 matches.

Watch the footage and Joffas work is hungry.
He made the tackle was at marker and ended the play out covering (sprinting across to the winger).

If Joffa plays hungry and the other players all play like that our season won’t be as bad as the raiders game started us off

He's not blameless but we have had to stuff him around a bit. He came to us as a fullback but got injured early on and we decided to go with Thompson at fullback and stuck him at centre. He wasn't hopeless though as he ended up making Origin. Last year, he trained entire pre-season at hooker but then Harry Grant came through and he kept switching between centre/fullback with AD. Now this year, he has trained the entire pre-season at fullback but Laurie deservedly has been given the first shot.

We can't blame any of this on lack of professionalism or bad attitude at training because clearly Maguire was impressed enough to make him captain. He has never let us down in defence no matter the position. He is usually mistake free in attack but has never been given time to make combinations with any player.

And he hasn't complained, still kept plugging away and trained hard. I hope he makes a position his own this year as I have a bit of respect for this guy. And I hope no one brings his salary into the conversation.

Yep I noticed that as well. I think he covered more ground than Laurie just to ensure he’d be there to make the tackle if need-be. Love that hunger & hopefully it rubs off to the rest of our pack!

But that has been Mbyes rap sheet since he got into grade

But we still signed him .....you can't blame Mbye

I was more impressed that Joffa rushed across from marker following the play and could have been needed. Those effort plays don't often get rewarded, but team-mates really appreciate them nonetheless.

To be fair, the Boncs never stood a chance understanding all that. If only he had some analogies about hairstyles... 🤣

Yeah our defense was actually good most of the game. We were let down by poor offense really. You can see in the clip that Joffa identified that we were short and took it upon himself to flog over in cover just in case there was a break made on the inside of the 2nd or 3rd man. He wasn't required in the end because of the decision Seibold identified with Mbye, which meant that Whitehead didn't have time to make Nofoaluma or Roberts make a decision to allow him to exploit the overlap. The other part is that Laurie was positioned perfectly. So we actually had 2 men in cover so really what was a 4 on 3 that we managed to recover from because of Mbye was actually a 4 on 5 because of excellent cover defense.

I noticed Tamou doing the same thing as Joffa did here, several times in the game.
