Sheens to keep Kangaroos job

HE WAS the losing coach as New Zealand sprung the biggest sporting shock of 2010 by taking out the Four Nations final, but Tim Sheens was yesterday again handed the reins of the Australian team.
Sheens has survived where others have perished as both Wayne Bennett and Ricky Stuart stood down after losing in the 2005 Tri-Nations tournament and 2008 World Cup.
Australian Rugby League CEO Geoff Carr yesterday defended the move to re-appoint Sheens, declaring: "He only lost one game."
And Sheens said he always believed he would keep the job.
"I'm not going to defend my situation at all to be quite honest," Sheens said.
"I've been offered the job and my job is to get on with it - not worry about what some people might say."
Sheens said his aim was to snare the Four Nations in England this year and set Australia on course to reclaim the No. 1 mantle at the 2013 World Cup.
The veteran mentor appreciates he faces the challenge of a changing of the guard with the retirement of front-rower Steve Price and both captain Darren Lockyer and Petero Civoniceva in the twilight of their careers.
Sheens also knows fans will not tolerate another tournament loss and is focused on avenging the Kiwis' 12-10 Four Nations win with victory in the Anzac Day Test in Christ- church, followed by success in the end-of-year Four Nations tournament in England.
"The reality is the rugby league world expects us to be No. 1," Sheens said.
