Short line dropouts..A no brainer

Buzz had an article on Canterburys short line drop outs on the weekend. Saying that all teams should be using them , The Dogs aren't the pioneers of this it was one of a lot of
Innovations brought into the game two years ago by the Walker brothers at Ipswich.

Their theory was that if you have a reasonably reliable kicker, then youve got a 50%chance of getting the ball back on every dropout, and if you dont, you usually end up at roughly at the same spot on the field on your first or second tackle.anyway.

They were right , and had the stats to back it up.
They also used the same kick at kickoffs as well, with similar results.
It's a better play than to gaurantee the opposition possession

I watched a fair few of Ipswich games at that stage and they really perfected it.
If a few more coaches in the nrl were to open their eyes it would work in the nrl as well

What if you have a bloke like Austin who can drop-kick 60m on the fly?

I could cop the occasional grubber restart at the sideline, but giving them tackle 1 from 10-out repeatedly seems a bad strategy.

Sure Ipswich used innovations to good effect but they are playing QLD cup.

We stared using it to great affect in 2014 when we had Potter as coach and Pat Richards kicking off.

Taylor made him nix it - apparently had stats to the contrary saying it just gifts field position.

I agree with you, and if used consistently I think within 5 years we'll have a rugby union Styled kick off after each play -I honestly would prefer that to what we have now.

Austin usually can't do that - he's as average as the rest of them TBH - He just had a BIG wind at his back in the first half.

Today it didn’t impact us at all, did Moses get any right? We got the ball back 10 metres out a couple of times

Did you see Mitch Moses' short kicks today? Showed how badly they can go wrong. A better side than the Tigers would have scored from at least one of them.

Whichever team concedes points gets the option to either receive the kick-off or take the kick-off…

I could only see it being useful late in the game with scores tight? No other time.
Possession is still important and there would be too much pressure on the conceding side after having points scored against them.
It could become like the 20/40, rarely used.

Who would have thought that last year’s grand finalist are in a game where they are trialing rule changes because it has no bearing on the finals!
