We won’t win this year regardless

So you're happy to write off the season and maybe pick up the spoon?

We need to perform to attract players, sponsors and members. We can't just say 'we won't win this year' so we won't bother trying.

If it means we can build a better squad to be successful next year, then yes.

It all depends on the terms of the deal, but I’d be happy to sacrifice this year for some hope next year.

this!

Imagine hearing from our players "the year is over so we're just writing off this season and try for next year" We would all lose our minds.

Reality is if we want to land a big fish we need to make finals or at least show momentum, we are only 2 wins out of the eight so it's not unrealistic.

And if that was the case I’d say let’s go for it. But who are we going to target that’s off contract/available that will strengthen our team for next year? There’s really not much available for next year.

Madden can play 6, Doueihi can play 6, Walters can play 6.
Simpkin can take the 14 jersey.
We dont need him for this season.

I disagree. Madden is unproven and unlikely to play 80 NRL minutes any time this year. AD has shown he's not a mature 6 and is better at centre. Walters is not a first choice 6, doesn't have NRL fitness and could be gone this year. Simpkin can play 14 but is still a year or two away from being a quality first grader.

The only problem most people have with Mbye is his price tag and I agree with this - I've always said he's overpaid. This doesn't mean he's not needed this year.

Unless we are willing to write off this year we are one injury away from major problems.

Panic offloading is just as bad as panic buying.

I don’t believe it’s ‘panic’ offloading - we’ve been shopping Mbye around for the past 2 years but couldn’t attract any suitors - get him in the trolley before the Dragons have a change of heart.

It's professional sport - there is no next year, just next week. Who would want to come here when we are willing to sacrifice a season? Hardly building a winning culture.

Still plenty around: Su'a, Gagai, Finucane, Toby Rudolf, Hynes, Tesi Niu, Dan Tupou, B Smith would all improve our squad IMO. Plus any young players who have their path blocked in first grade. I'd be raiding the Panthers lower grades.

That would be true regardless of who we sign for next year, as we've seen from the Titans. But we need to get better.

Dragons want him to play 14.

Please let this be true.

Don’t do it for 2 weeks

That but also make sure we have an upgrade/ at least an equivalent player coming in.

On Today’s post game 2MMM interview with Nicho Hyens he said he had no offers for next year.
Sounded like the Broncos would like him.

Well the last thing we need is to be in a bidding war for a fringe first grader the Broncos want.

He wouldn't be fringe in too many other sides. It's taking Paps to keep him out of the Storm team...

He'd block the progression of one of our very good juniors. Hynes won't help us bridge the gap to the top teams. Our outstanding juniors will. Let's not fritter what money we do have away on fringies.

Seriously P&C, you have to put this one eye approach to our juniors into perspective, they are not FG ready and they may come on in a few years, BUT we need the players now.

So we invest in juniors and then block their path to the NRL? That is an excellent way to deliver them to other predatory teams.

You can't have a team full of half cooked pies.
You need fully cooked bacon and cheese pies from Yatala with a few half cooked's in the oven.
Hynes is fully cooked and delicious.
Juniors that are good enough will still find their way out of the oven.

Bulldogs weren't looking like wooden spooners when they signed. Rumours suggest Burton is regretting it and there's nothing firm on B Smith. I wouldn't be surprised if JAC is having second thougbts.

None of this alters the fact we should be doing everything we can to compete this year with the team we have.

If Hastings came now I wouldn't be bothered if Mbye left.

We should make this happen.
He's a super star.

**I urge everyone to watch his sit down / face to face with Matty Johns**

Why?

Why do we all of a sudden decide to buy players based on podcasts or interviews?

It made me appreciate his character a lot more.
It was interesting, insightful and inspiring.

If you're a footy fan like MYSELF, it's one of the good success stories of rugby league.

* Not to mention is as a great player.
Can play anywhere and always looks like likely.
He's better than almost all our backs.
I like him at centre for us.

Tall, fast, safe, creative and good finisher.

I was against him a couple of weeks ago but Im warming to him. The problem for me is that we have bought Laurie for FB. IMO Hynes is too small for centre or 5/8. Would be good at 1

Hynes to small for centre or five eight, you must have him confused with someone else, he is plenty big enough at 188cm and 90kg

These Brooks supporters want no one who might eventually replace him.

Yes Hynes could play 7, said it himself recently.

So this has now turned to a Brooks' thread?

Laurie is better than Hynes at fullback, Doueihi is better than Hynes at centre and 5/8. Both of these players don't have Hughes Munster, JAC, Smith, Papenhuyzen and Grant in their team.

If you think Laurie is better than Hynes at FB you have not been watching the games. Hynes at this stage has it all.

Laurie at this stage has speed and can take a bomb. His defence, putting it mildly is atrocious, does not link up very often, goes himself at every opportunity, does not set up anybody else etc.

And..... I am not convinced he is doing a good job of setting the defensive line.

Hynes eats him as a FB and would be a good centre alongside Gildart.
