I think this has been a very productive pre season.

- Appointed Madge
- Added Matterson, Momo and Musgrove
- Re-signed Brooks

How about we all just sit on that and enjoy it for a while, instead of going on about the last 2 spots. The club is more than capable of knowing what needs to be done. Relax and be thankful the club has achieved this much so far.

Agree, productive off-season and happy with the acquisitions of those you've mentioned. With one spot left I think it's best to leave it open going into the season instead of filling it for the sake of filling it.
Attention will turn to 2020 recruitment.

One of the best off seasons i can remember.

Given the disastrous start to it as well management have certainly kicked some goals.

Reading the stories apparently Jennings has signed a contract but it can't be approved because souths are over the cap. If they kepep Johnson they won't be able to keep Jennings. Silly not to make a play.

I don't think Bennett wants Jennings.

I don't think Bennett wants Jennings.

He's the one Jennings that does the dirty work.

Forget Johnston - pretend full back that wants far too much money. Bad luck what he wants doesn't match his ability.

Happy with the player signings so far… but...let's be honest.....
I know we aren't Melb or Rosters but I think we would all be lying to ourselves if we can't admit that without signing a gun centre **and** proper forward it's another failed off-season / foray into the player market.

Most distressing is that there are already posts that precede this one, from our fans, that they are satisfied with our 2019 team and how we should probably start thinking about 2020.....
ummm, FYI it's practically the same team! the team that missed the 8...AGAIN!

We were apparently all "cashed up" and it was largely acknowledged that **the 2018 off-season was/is absolutely the window where we need to sign established guns into centre and forward. Particularly forward.**
We have added no origin or rep players to our roster, nor have we even signed any established first-graders, so please, do not cite the lame old reason of the "salary cap" - I do not buy it. That's an excuse for sour-grape-suckers who (1) are never privvy to actual accounts and (2) who veil their inferiority complex behind the excuse of the salary cap. Sorry - that's how I feel.
From where I sit it seems we picked up a few fringe first-graders to fill these positions (though they may come good...I do have hope for Momo). But this is just not good enough. I know the off-season isn't over, but we cannot be complacent. We need to demand better. We need quality!

We need to appreciate that:
(1) our forward pack has lacked punch for years and this excuse has inevitably followed most of our losses - and rightly so.
(2) the Brooks thread has largely been dominated by his groupies slamming his critics, but what we all can agree on is that he hasn't had a proper pack to play behind - and this may very well turn him into a world-beater.

As it stands right now, we haven't made significant improvements to our pack, so I don't see how either of the above trends will change. Thus, I fail to grasp how can any of us realistically expect it to be anything but another year of what if's.

Look, I love our players and have a natural bias as to how awesome they are, but I am trying to be objective, so unless Madge is an absolute genius I just can't see us doing much better in 2019, with largely the same cattle.

Please don't call me a pessimist, I am just calling for some perspective.

We need to learn from the mistakes of the past. Stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
Cronulla did things differently and reaped rewards by becoming a perennial threat. So did Souths.
It's bloody well our turn. Come on Madge!!! Come on fans! Let's NOT settle for anything less than the absolute best we can get!

Please don't shoot down those like me who only want a crazy amazing team and refuse to settle.

Kyle Flanagan signs new deal with Sharks

Well, we do know a strong forward pack is a basic belief of Maguire so I expect the forward pack will not know what has hit them when he starts laying in to them with expectations. Some of the coasters in the pack I think will be shown the door within the next 4 weeks haven given Maguire a few weeks to assess. I think we will pick up a couple of 'notable' players in the final few weeks before season starts when the final rosters and player trades happen. The way I figure it, WT have salary cap room where we can afford to subsidise 1 or 2 plodders to move on.

That’s a great way to sell them. Other sides should be lining up to sign plodders.

Kind of agree. Didnt like our recruitment last year, and not overly fussed this season - but if you say that you do open yourself up for criticism.
I think we possibly over achieved this year (due to a ridiculously good start ) which is what really concerns me considerng how much of our cap is invested in players who for whatever reason did not live up to expectation. (Imo)
Hope we have got the right coach to get the best from our entire squad this year, but considering our deficiences, and the rosters we are going to have to be better than to make the eight - looks like more of the same to me next year.
And - I hope Im wrong and that Musgrove and Matterson prove to be the best signings we have made in years.

It's already been posted hundreds of times here and elsewhere. I'm not going to guild the Lilly and say they're magnificent. Solid workhorses is best you can expect but Taylor is a very, very good defensive player able to clean up a lot of broken play.

You are 100% correct. I’ve been saying this forever. Recruitment, for whatever reason, has been, and continues to be average apart from the odd goodun (Brooks, Mbye, Matterson maybe)
Someone else said it - too many journeymen and too many reserve graders.

Thankful we didnt sign Bennett. The events of the last week all seem a bit bitter and twisted.
Doesnt present like a coach who ended up where he wanted to be.

I think he wanted out. He just wanted to cash out on the way and punish the Donkeys.

Not sure whether his or Ivan's situation was worse TBH. I think Ivan's exit was probably more expertly handled.

I think he wanted to stay, but wanted out on his terms after Broncos signed Seibold. I think that Seibolds behaviour is on a par with Cleary.

Yeah, him trying to take the moral high ground on the weekend was quite ironic.
