I believe the thought is that if the player is a developing junior with proven talent then by bringing an outsider in ahead of him it may push your junior to look elsewhere or feel his future is limited.
Your point is valid however, so careful choices and shorter contracts for these outside players should solve the problem.

Havea is 16 years old and at least 4-5 years off first grade... He has a lot of development left and growing to do. Who knows if he will even make grade, and if he does it may not even be in the 13 position. Kids grow, skills develop.

Three years ago in the Harold Matts Galvin was playing back row, Luke Laulilii was playing fullback, Heath Mason was playing 5/8 and Kit Laulilii was playing lock. All in different positions currently.

Latu’s two years older than Havea. similar players with similar wraps, so I’d anticipate a similar development curve.

you go to market and sign a 19-year-old kid when there’s a 17-year-old junior in your wheelhouse already, arguably with more upside, you’re going to piss plenty of people off.

Havea is the most pure lock I’ve seen this club develop in decades. I doubt he’s developed in another position. I think we need a 13, but it needs to be a genuine first grader who can improve us from the word go. Richardson wasn’t far off when he had Horsburgh and then Hetherington agree to terms.

Plenty had the same view on Matamua and Fa’agutu. Massive wraps, Origin and schoolboy reps etc. Havea may be better than Latu, Latu may be better than Hevea. That’s for them to prove.

The whole narrative around “blocking a pathway” is starting to go too far the other way now. It’s getting to the point where parents and agents now basically demanding that a spot is held for their kid in the first grade squad and is theirs the moment they turn 18/19 without even truely working for it. It’s becoming a detriment to the club and development of clubs as a whole.

My view is, yes there may be a gun kid 2 years older than you, but if you truely are as good as you think you are you should be able to take that spot from them and show that you’re the better long term option. Penrith have had that mentality for years and so have the storm. You perform better, you get the spot.

Competition is good . They’re not going to be in the same teams for a long time anyway. The 19 year old will play flegg and Cup , then obviously nrl around 22 . Unless they’re a gun so that would push their timeline up to around 20. So 2026 at the earliest , but probably 2027 .
The -7 year old has another year in ball , then at least 1-2 years in the mature age levels before nrl . So that’s around 2028 probably 2029 .
There’s absolutely no reason you Wouldn’t sign Latu as they’re not competing for a spot really for 2 years probably 3 .
That’s an eternity in football .

They create dialogue, and conversations . How’s that a bad thing ? It’s only bad if people take it as gospel . Most see it for what it is
