Looks like Super League teams will be making plays for Packer and Reynolds. If we can retire Matulino medically as well, there may still be hope in 2020.

There is only hope if their is anyone left of quality to sign

If we free up cash for next year we might snag someone after an early release from their current club.

@gallagher to be honest I think the players we bring on board won't be from the off-contract group but as you suggest, those under contract who are being offered to other clubs or free to negotiate elsewhere.

Yeah, you look at someone like Paps. He's apparently on $140 for next year. If we sign him for $500k from 2021 then Melb may be happy for him to go early. Things change pretty quickly when money's involved.

@gallagher
Interesting concept.
But what is their back up plan?
Munster or Hughes at Fullback?
But they are not happy with their Halfback at the moment and have reshuffled the deck chairs to get Paps in at Fullback.
Until they are settled in the halves I can’t see them releasing Paps.
They may be paying 200,000 k next year but I assure you if Melbourne was forced to pay even 700,000 to keep Paps I’m sure they would. It would still be a steal on a value / output ratio.
The only variable to this discussion is if Paps actually wants to leave the club to move back to Sydney not to dissimilar to how the RTS move to warriors.
If his keen on staying there, there is no chance for 2020 let alone 2021.
However putting pressure on Melbourne to retain him for more money opens up the opportunity to stealthily sign a less valued squad member under Melbournes nose. Usually the way the big clubs play the game.

For sure mate. I was just using him as an example of a quality player on a low wage that could be tempted.

@happy_tiger Packer $675k and McQueen $300k. Total say $975k. Getting $400-450k back would mean us paying 55-60% of their freight. I don't think even the Tigers would pay that much....but could be wrong.

If you take out the Penrith game at Magic Round when was McQueens best game 3 seasons ago at best

Tigers have been trying to offload Packer for 4 months now

Reckon you might get 300 k for Packer 150 for McQueen

Would packer be able to get a visa given his criminal record 🤔

@WT2K Catalans Dragons could be a goer per the article. Haven't players with a record been able to play in France in the past?

I missed Catalans in the article (my bad) and yep you are correct.

I think we pay whatever we need to. If their not on the field then let em go and potentially stop polluting the club culture..

If we can move on Packer and Reynolds and Matulino accepts retirement (however that might come about) does Zane Musgrove 're-enter club roster assuming his court case ends satisfactorily before start of 2020 season? I NRL refused to register his contract for 2019 with WT but what about 2020? Does he or WT still have some valid legal agreement for him to play with us? If so, he might be a low cost replacement for Packer.

@Spartan117 you would definitely want to be able to scrape together enough brass to sign a first grade player who will ultimately make our 1st grade side better. Agree culture is important too.

@2005magic Musgrove's contract was never registered by the NRL. If he is allowed back, I don't imagine his bargaining power would be the same as 12 months ago.

@THE_POM are we expecting big changes? As in plus 5 of the top 30? Or just one or two

Reynolds, McQueen, Taylor, Packer, Matulino
