Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Honestly If anyone has any connection to the club and is aware of the situation please keep us updated because this is quite depressing. Seriously what is going on??

The Matto thing may be a money grab by his management. If it’s a personality thing with the coach it needs to be sorted ASAP. We can not afford to see our best player walk or forced to stay against his wishes.

Always thought Madge is a bit like Wok Ryan...great coach but short shelve life at anyone club due to his methods. This is shaping up to be a hell of a off season

Might just be his manager beating up the situation to get a contract upgrade. Who's to say the meeting between Madge and his management wasn't about upgrading his contract and locking him up long term? The article seems to just assume that there's a "frosty" relationship between them. Hard to believe considering Matterson was the one who convinced Aloiai to stay at the Tigers a couple months ago.

I don't think it will happen personally, the article seems a little vague and i don't think that is the type of person Matterson is hopefully...

Money grab for sure. Absolutely disgusting that he is only on $350k. What a bargain, and yes $500k would still be a bargain.

Rubbish though when players only expect a pay increase when they're playing well, but would never accept a decrease when their form goes the other way.

Really hope the matto thing is untrue. @THE_POM please come back on and shut this one down quick. If anything, we should be extending the bloke already

Ryan Matterson could be headed for the exit door in the off-season as the Wests Tigers try to resolve a frosty relationship between the star forward and coach Michael Maguire.

NRL.com can reveal club officials, including Maguire, recently met with Matterson and his manager to discuss his future at the club.

The meeting came after the Tigers learned a number of rival NRL clubs had received expressions of interest for Matterson's services, despite the 24-year-old still having two more years to run on his deal at the joint venture.

Matterson has arguably been the Tigers' best player this season since joining them from the Sydney Roosters, however there has been lingering tension with the hard-nosed coach for a couple of months.

Maguire is renowned as a strict disciplinarian, and his methods often get the best out of players.

However, Matterson is used to a different style of coaching having played under Trent Robinson at the Roosters.

The Tigers, who on Thursday returned to training up until grand final week, have every intention of Matterson seeing out his deal, however the club is bracing itself for the possibility he requests a release in the coming weeks.

Matterson bumps off several Roosters to score

Last year the Tigers showed with the way they handled the Ivan Cleary situation they would only release someone from a contract if they were to benefit, which in the case of Cleary came in the form of a six-figure compensation figure.

Matterson is on a deal worth around $350,000 a season at the Tigers, and is likely to attract offers in excess of $500,000 should the current dilemma result in a request for a release.

Several clubs are monitoring the situation. It is understood the Bulldogs have been sounded out about their potential interest from someone close to Matterson, while the Knights have some money to spend given the departure of Jesse Ramien, and potentially Danny Levi and Herman Ese'ese.

Matterson is also a Parramatta junior, and the club is trying to bolster its stocks in the forwards and could pounce.

Lol, seriously? There are 15 clubs who cannot talk to him about contracts while he has two years remaining on his current deal. This seems far fetched and rediculous being that there were reports during the year that he was actively engaging players to re-sign with us. I call bs and if not I want to know what the NRL is doing about clubs tampering with a contracted player.

@BalmainJnr I would also like him to come out and shut this down and quicker the better... I know he should not have to do this but when we are trying to recruit players the last thing we need is this rubbish out there and affecting players decisions.

Definitely, though on re-reading the way this is worded is interesting...

“The meeting came after the Tigers learned a number of rival NRL clubs had received expressions of interest for Matterson’s services, despite the 24-year-old still having two more years to run on his deal at the joint venture.”

Rival clubs have received EOI’s for his services... His agent at work? Still think it is fake news.

Chammas is usually pretty spot on with Tigers news too.

Yes, he basically always gets Tigers news right.

So, very likely the Matto story is on the money. One or two posters on Tigers facebook sites said this was coming (named Matto specifically) a few days back also.

YAWN! Really???? ..... are we supposed to take the bait every player manager feeds to the media?

Not disgusting! Good negotiations by Tigers. Why is anyone complaining if we are paying "unders" for a player? Normally the boring accusations levelled at Wests are of paying "overs".

This maybe the the story that people assumed was to do with Masters!
