You can kill me if I'm wrong but as of this afternoon, from training, the predicted starting backline is 1.Mbye/ M johns, 2 Nofo/Bradley, 3 Momo, 4 BJ, 5 Jennings, 6 JR, 7 Brooks.
Talau training at 4 but will start in CC. JL for certain expected next week. Talau advised not NRL until at least round 6 as some concerns. Reece Hoffman more forward than Talau. Not sure what concerns re Talau. Douhei not even a consideration but JL expected next week. If not JL, Jennings at centre. Walters first choice hooker, Mbye and JR have trained there but as insurance as Walters is preferred starter.
This is the opinion of a trainer, as inside as you can get but only his observations.
Confidence in JL signing.

I’m very confused. Who is M Johns? Refuse to believe JR will get the 6 over Benji.

I'm just relaying my discussion with a trainer this afternoon. Apparently, at this moment, that's the preferred line up. Don't know M Johns but apparently a unit. Benji feeling the heat. No one believes AD will be there but apparently BJ is a done deal.

But we don’t have a player M Johns, do we? And where’s Thompson? Not on the wing?

Might be Matheson Johns signed for cc ?

So would need to be upgraded to be able to play!


Still three spots to fill,

CC players can play a certain amount of games without being top 30 I thought? Once break the threshold then upgrade?

Yes you could play him and then upgrade if the spot is still available. If it is the intention of coaching staff to play this kid at fullback, then they have effectively taken up the spot anyway because why would you put that noose around your own neck by committing a spine spot to a player who will have to leave?

BIG Unit. Cant believe it would come about, but its always a pipedream that the Tigers will pull someone out of nowhere...a la benji back in the day. Certainly physically looks the goods

Hopefully he is a backline gem like Garner has been for the pack.

So from what I’ve read tonight we’re considering upgrading a cc player to play fullback and Walters to play 9. 1 nrl game between them. I sure hope this is not true.

I wouldn’t be reading too much into it ..

No..changed went from Top 25 to Top 30 + development players and the 2nd Tier Cap was abolished...even then you needed an exemption from the NRL to play if outside the Top 25..

Only players with an NRL top 30 contract can play NRL...Development players after June 30 but you still need an exemption for them..

I thought you had to get permission to play them and that was only granted if you had no other options?

Matheson Johns was NSW under 20s centre in 2018 and NSW residents in 2019. Partnered Billy Smith who was to start at the Roostwrs in the nsw under 20s and Papemhuyzen was fb at the time. So plenty of potential and has succeeded every year in stepping up a grade. Wouldnt shock me if he got a top 30 spot but more shocking if he started at 1

Has come looking for a chance. Seems like decent depth in the backs.

For that to happen Souths and AD would have to agree to a release....then AD can negotiate with a clean slate....look AD wants out of Souths and will not leave Sydney, he lives at home...so it’s us or another Sydney based club..

Not for the next 2 years as he has a contract with Souths. The stumbling block in signing for us, as I understand it, is Souths refusing to chip in any money and we won’t consider any deal without them putting in.

This is the problem with back ended deals. Souths now want to move him on but he isn’t worth what they are paying because they short changed him at the start. Now his salary is inflated so they want to move him on. Exactly like when we tried to move Farah.

If I were a player I’d be very hesitant about signing a back ended contract, and if I were a manger, I’d be advising my clients not to sign them.

The NRL could solve the problem by forcing clubs to pay out the average over the contract term. So if it’s a 400k per year deal average for Doueihi, Souths would have to chip in any money above that 400k for the remaining term. It is really money that they owe him from the early years of the contract.

Arrow completely dismissed us, and publicly that is a concern, and the Latrell saga, we all know that one, and the fact we are relying on Benji is a real concern, he came back for one year, he is heading in to season 3, we have to move on from him.

How do you define Arrow completely dismissing us ? To me he dismissed every team in the comp and went to Souths. I assume because they offered the best deal. Same as the Latrell saga. Those signings affect us in a similar way to every team that didn't sign these guys.

Benji has been unreal for us. I'd much rather rely on him than Reynolds.

There are no real problems here other than ones that people are creating in their heads. We just have to see how we go next year but I like our pack and if we sign BJ then we are looking to be at a similar level to last year but with our cap in a better position. We may go okay over the next couple of years.

If anything I think we are looking to be a team on the up.

I think you will find Arrow wants to play under Bennett,the old Broncs connection...nothing to do with dismissing WTs,just not where he wants to be,Unca Wayne is at Souths...

No, you’re right. I was just taking it as set that we won’t budge, Souths won’t budge so the only way out is a pay cut or renegotiation with us. I like AD, but in my opinion and only opinion, I think Souths have paid overs and therefore that is their problem and not one we should look to solve.
It’s worth noting, while Wayne Bennett may not be in charge of recruitment at Souths, he has not left a club in a better position than when he started so far. ( Barring Broncos 1st time around as he was inaugural coach).
