The reason they couldn’t hold onto Matterson and force eels to release Stefano was Matterson was leaving the club either way - if they kept him after November they would’ve had to start paying his contract which would’ve come out of our cap and it would’ve been cheaper for eels.

Eels knew that so they denied the Stefano release and waited for Matterson. I’d much prefer it this way compared to having to pay Matterson to play for eels.

What are you on about - Matterson was signed until the end of 2021- he wasn't going anywhere without a release. We wouldn't of paid parra a cent. We would have been paying a disgruntled sook to sit out the season if he refused to play - nothing more. So he would have been a good bargaining chip if we hadn't been so keen to release him.

There’s no way the club could’ve kept him his position was untenable. Keep him in reserve grade and you’re paying his contract to do nothing but upset the playing group.

The club had no choice but to release him, and they didn’t want to pay him to play at another club so they let him go

The original post was about why didn't we keep him a few months longer to force Parras hand in releasing Stefano. Someone posted that he was going anyway and that we would have been paying parra for him to play if we didn't release him. Thats what my post is about - nothing about the untenable situation - i couldn't give a rats that we released him - however we played it really badly.

That’s what I said, and it’s true. As soon as it’s past November you start paying a players contract. If we kept him after November we would have to start paying him when he would get a release either way and it would come out of our cap. That’s why he got released at that time.

The club tried getting a player swap from clubs but clubs knew they could wait and he would get a release anyway. Club was in a crap position, lose-lose really and we can thank Matto for that.

IMO, your view on this is weak, as was Pascoe's stance. In the end we could have paid Matto a couple of weeks salary but ended up with a great player in exchange. Do i like the idea of paying Matto in 2020? No. Would I be ok to pay him 20-30k if we got Stefano (10k cheaper) in immeditate exchange ? Hell yes!

Both clubs best interests would be served. Instead only Parra wins.

Our club has lacked leadership on and off the field, and this allows stronger clubs to bully us. And keep on bullying us. Because we keep on rolling over. This needs to stop if we're ever going to be taken seriously at this club.

Not a signing for us .. but down here in the Nations Capital - Canberra .. I'm hearing a lot of noise that Billy Walters will be released by us to the Raiders next week for the rest of the season to play hooker / utility role for them .. ?? I hope this isn't true, why would we help those bludgers .. !!

They'd have to offer us one hell of a player in return to make this worth our while.

Roster spots to be filled and still no leaks from the club.

They don’t actually have to fill them this year. So they can wait until whoever they want is on the market.

It came from a comment by Michael Ennis on one of the footy shows nothing to it

But CHN to the Raiders is another matter altogether

Again, the eels had no reason to release anyone to us. They knew they could just wait for him to be released because he clearly wasn’t going to be playing first grade and the club couldn’t afford to pay his contract while sitting in reserve grade. We’d also had years of paying players to be at other clubs and fans were sick of it along with Pascoe.

Unfortunately the NRL lets these players get away with it and there’s nothing the clubs can really do to stop them. What can a club do in a situation like that, unless you’re Melbourne or roosters who can afford it you have no choice

The club tried to do trades! No other club was interested. What else can they do!

It was more about freeing the Roster spot and using all of Matterson's money to upgrade other players

So yes we didn't get anything from Pawa but were able to upgrade Twal, Talau and Garner ,around the same time..

Then sign Leilua L Walters Musgrove and have spots still in hand to sign Joey Douiehi later on with the others that had left in Farah Funua and Marsters..

Also wrks both ways didn't see many complaints about releasing Marsters to the Cowgirls..hmmmm

However can’t see reason for Thompson release apart from keeping player and manager happy.

Titans are certainly benefiting from it not so much us.

This is true also as releasing Thompson really had no benefit as he plays in a position we lacked depth and have been found out with injuries and suspension..

It's all about the balance..The Club lost out there..

You'd have to think there was a target there that didn't pan out. Madge doesn't strike me as some sort of benevolent figure.

People too focused on the negatives. Releasing Marsters and signing Luciano and Doueihi is some of the best business the club has done in years. Musgrove and Walters good pickups too and they’re not on twice the money they’re actually worth

I reckon Madge just didn’t expect three injuries/suspensions to our backline as soon as Corey left. Tough luck really but having a roster Spot open isn’t a bad thing still opportunity to sign slmeone

What I don't get is we fought hard to keep Thompson about a year ago and then he becomes surplus to requirements

As far as I was concerned he was our 1st back up fullback and 1st back up winger ...possibly even a starter when you take in Jennings lack of form

Especially with Momo at Melbourne

I think that it was an opportunity for Thompson to get a few year deal with good $s that WT could not match.
So WT allowed his request for release before the deal disappeared.

So if our contracted players get a better offer than what we're paying them we should just let them go? Makes sense.

It's a tough one. You want to do what's best for the player but also what's best for the team. The decision to let thomo wasn't best for the team. He would have been playing every week atm.
