The problem is cognitive dissonance. Some here would do well to [read this article](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/07/role-cognitive-dissonance-pandemic/614074/?fbclid=IwAR3V_FcAFiPo68LT1-UU-WUtcaI6Nu8Pr_xG55KDiageaGruSU-C8pjtM5o) and reflect on their stubborn inability to change their opinion or stance even with overwhelming evidence the should. Ironically, they double down and try to make reasons to support their irrationality.
It's an interesting topic. The most obvious example comes in the form of die-hard Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon supporters. They believe he is correct and will make ridiculous excuses for him no matter how clear the evidence that he's wrong.
