Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Let's make a distinction here guys. Signing older props has not been our problem. Signing older props on massive, long-dated, deals has been our problem.

If Tamou comes at a good price for a year or two and is there for depth and leadership, that could be a smart move. We're going to need more experience.

We don't need experience. We need quality players. If Tamou comes at a good price for a year or two it could be a good signing.

It comes down to cost versus output. Let's not make experience a criteria that we pay extra for. Personally I'd prefer inexperienced Hass compared to experienced Tamou but the dollars matter.

De Belin on a day release contract perhaps

Tamou is just another Packer or Matulino. Past his used by date, won’t put up good numbers for us and wants a long deal to make up his retirement fund. Would rather pass, spend money on some strike in our back line and focus on signing some forwards who are in their prime to lead us in 2022. Would like to sign Bunty Afoa as for next year if we get any forwards

Tamou is the type of player we buy and it screws our cap up for years. Bunty is the player we don't buy and who will probably contribute and not cost a fortune. I'd prefer Bunty for sure.

It's pretty simple - all the club should care about is cost and performance along with having the right character for the club. We don't need loose canons.

I agree, Tamau is 32 this year, James Tamou (born 13 December 1988), so a no from me

Just read that manly and storm are favourites for Johnston. I thought he would be good with us but maybe that means we can get JAC? Does anyone on here know if we are a decent chance of actually getting him

Tamou is a must have. Ticks all the boxes we need.

Yep, Tamou ticks all the boxes for a Tigers signing. Old? tick. At the end of his career? Tick. Cant get a starting spot at his current club? Tick. Needs a final end of career payday? Tick.

Sounds like a Tiger to me.

haha that made me laugh 🙂

he does indeed tick all those boxes.

I'm confused .....why does he wear the 8 jersey every week if he is off the bench

Not sure. Maybe because he has the (c) next to his name? He was listed to start against us, wearing 8 but came off the bench. I dont watch all of their games.

I know last year Panthers fans wanted to get rid of him.

Turns out that Tamou is a mate of mines BIL and is apparently a quality bloke. Still the wrong kind of signing for mine.

Who lead the forwards then ...may as well have all the superstar juniors with no leaders ...hang on ...another club doing that think they are based in SEQ ...how are they doing

Where are the 34yo props at Melbourne, Souths, Parra?

James Tamou (born 13 December 1988)
Jessy Bromwich (Born 31 May 1989)
Damien Cook (born 23 June 1991)
Reagan Camiel Gillard (Born 27 July 1993)

Momo....Im not sure if Im getting your response correctly. So in response to my question to how many 34yo are at Melbourne Souths and Parra you listed a 31yo, a 29 yo and 27yo?

Are you agreeing with me, trying to prove my point?

Soooo not much difference there and nothing much more appealing out there that’s off contract.
Only other solution is bring Woods back or buy our contract of so one like Jackson from the bulldogs.

Or wait, meanwhile working on what we have got.

Tamou is 31 for starters as is Jesse Bromwich .....David Gower is 34 ......JWH is 31 ....stay away from those 31 year olds lol

These guys go good in their systems in successful teams. Rarely will a prop that age move to a weaker club and have the same impact. They’ll bring leadership qualities but someone like Tamou won’t offer a lot on the field for us, and he wants a 2 year deal minimum. Not worth it for me.

Panthers were not a winning team until this year as they finished below us last year.
We will desperately need experience the next few years as we have a lot of younger players on the books.. he is not the capt of Panthers for nothing. worth the go to me.

Tamou was head and shoulders the leader at Penrith in 2019

And complete rubbish in 2018. Which do you reckon we get when he is 33 or 34?

Well Campbell Gillard was rubbish then also and now you’d break the bank to sign him.

I have never mentioned Campbell Gillard in any thread. What are you talking about. I would prefer him and pay more for him than Tamou though. Wouldnt you? Better player and young.

I’ll trust Madge to make the right call but I bet that his experience tells him what’s most lacking in our pack.

I trust Madge more than most here.

No matter what age it’s the player that has the hunger to Lift & drive people When their heads are down. And I believe our current roster does not have one player that can do that.

No matter what age? Seriously?

I'd be signing griffin as assistant coach.
We need someone who can complement Madge and I’ve heard his players love him, similar to Bennett.

Are you griffins manager ? Because the word on the street prior to him getting the sack at the riff , was that he was like a school teacher and constantly treated the players like children . There was a huge player revolt . He’s apparently a football savant though , with a great eye for the game .

All spread by the Cleary supporters - no doubt.

Did Griffin set up the pathways at the Panthers? If so he did a first rate job?

Hard to know for sure - but I would think he along with Gus set it up and he did the nurturing.

I'm not sure who brought it up on the forum but the Central West pathway program(for them) was implemented by Pascoe, which has also been highly successful for them IMO.

But agree it's their state of the art COE and their coaching staff that has been second to none - for junior development.

It wasnt driven by Pascoe, Gould or Cleary. It was driven by filthy capitalism as all good things are. Have a look at where all "Panthers Group" clubs are, in particular the ones more recently purchased. "Whilst we are here, we may as well ingratiate the locals...".

Go for Aaron Woods, see if cronulla will relase him early

It will never happen but Woods would be a great pick up for us.

I wouldn't rule it out-just yet. Woods has ample experience at rep level and with us. Also think he'd be gettable at a reasonable price if he wanted out of the Sharkies. That said, a player like Tamou intimidates the opposition much more than Woods ever has.

This may be old school and I know Larry was outstanding but watch the 5/8 in this long distance try. He makes it his role to get to the ball to make the last pass. His name is John Sparks former Aust Schools 5/8 he came to the Tigers the same year Jack came to the Magpies. Both were outstanding Wollongong juniors. It is the finesse in the age of. bash and barge that I get a huge boost from.

Love to have Larry on deck now.....

You can actually..for $800k.Hes called JAC

Yes to Tamou for mine , the guy is a leader of men , rep experience and a big body to boot , better than what we have , and if we can get Addo-Carr we would be heading in the right direction

NRL article saying clubs are planning as if there’s 28 roster spots for next season because they still don’t know. Leaving it very late to tell clubs how big their rosters are

I'm hoping Madge is looking for guys like Jackson. We'd never get him, especially with Barrett incoming and the Laundy sponsorship sorting the back-office. Jacko, Frizz and Haas have been mentioned and rightly so, coz those are the types that never stop, never slack off or lie down.
Loved that about Heighno, Payto, Gaz Ellis, Big Keithy and Brycey Gibbs. They had that mental drive to keep going and not start to crab sideways or shirk when the going got tough, or let their opposition dictate how they went about their business and lose their heads.
Its guys with that drive and mental toughness that we need. Classic example is against Pantsers last week, when Mbop squared-up to Cleary, after that we got side-tracked from the game. Panthers stuck to the game plan and the whole momentum of the game swung in their favour.
We need more guys with Luccy and Nof's attitude, least they won't be so lonely out there.

If there is going to be 28 players is there any possibility of cutting two players with no cap impact?
For example can we just pay Packer and JRey, go our separate ways and have that payout sit outside the cap because whilst they’d have been in the top 30, they don’t make the top 28
Seems to me there’s a case to be made by a club management team worth it’s salt
