Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

If there is going to be 28 players is there any possibility of cutting two players with no cap impact?
For example can we just pay Packer and JRey, go our separate ways and have that payout sit outside the cap because whilst they’d have been in the top 30, they don’t make the top 28
Seems to me there’s a case to be made by a club management team worth it’s salt

I think that’s wishful thinking. NRL is looking for savings.
I bet reduced Cap numbers will be accompanied with some form of cut in reduced Grant from the League.
It’s already been muted that coaching staff and back room admin staff cap / grants will be targeted and hefty cuts are expected.

I’ve been thinking along the same lines. Not sure what the NRL’s position is on this. Does anybody know?

This would solve alot of our problems

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a good suggestion but it would pile a lot of deadwood in the player market and I think legal eagles representing the players wold not allow it. They are (too) comfortable currently pulling their weekly pay packets exclusively on the training paddock.

I'm hoping Madge is looking for guys like Jackson. We'd never get him, especially with Barrett incoming and the Laundy sponsorship sorting the back-office. Jacko, Frizz and Haas have been mentioned and rightly so, coz those are the types that never stop, never slack off or lie down.
Loved that about Heighno, Payto, Gaz Ellis, Big Keithy and Brycey Gibbs. They had that mental drive to keep going and not start to crab sideways or shirk when the going got tough, or let their opposition dictate how they went about their business and lose their heads.
Its guys with that drive and mental toughness that we need. Classic example is against Pantsers last week, when Mbop squared-up to Cleary, after that we got side-tracked from the game. Panthers stuck to the game plan and the whole momentum of the game swung in their favour.
We need more guys with Luccy and Nof's attitude, least they won't be so lonely out there.

Heighno started going sideways all the time, it was infuriating. He'd run to the line, fend at someone, then run sideways to find someone else to fend at, and then get smashed backwards...

NRL article saying clubs are planning as if there’s 28 roster spots for next season because they still don’t know. Leaving it very late to tell clubs how big their rosters are

It's absurd that preseason starts in a couple of months and clubs still have no idea how many roster spots they have available. Seeing its so late clubs should be given the choice to operate under the same rules that are currently in place or cut their roster to 28 and reduce the cap by 500k.

Its extremely unprofessional to leave people's livelihoods up in the air like this, and not allowing clubs to look after their players wellbeing.

Bloody hell you better start the cloning process

Which 5 you gonna bring in

I think we need both an experienced prop with the ability to run big metres, long minutes and lead our pack, as well as a ball playing lock who has some skills (Jake T, Vic Radley, or Wade G type). Twal is not that guy. These guys add another point of attack and take the heat off the halves as an option, making the team less predictable.
We are far too one dimensional - we don't have a Ponga or Teddy etc type that can make something out of nothing - hence our only attack has come via Benji or Noffa. The quality teams have many more strike options in attack.
In saying the above (at the risk of repeating myself) I am prioritising our pack as the area we need to improve - without the ability to dominate other teams in the middle it won't matter who our backs and halves are, we will not win enough games to make finals.

Just waiting on an email from uncle Nick before they can rubber stamp his idea.

Great idea, the tricolours would get that sort of thing signed off

He's a star and has x-factor, exactly what we need alongside engine room upgrades. Would be a huge incentive to others interested!

We know the club won't pay the 800k that the reports say he is after (maybe 500-600k tops) .. But as there is not much in quality on the market this year he would be a great start and would create a positive vibe around the joint. Would also assist in other players coming over as we just need the first one to break the duck.. Need to start somewhere

Fair call, maybe my memory has been tarnished and overly romanticised by the horrid years since that golden period, and a heart-felt yearning for a return to a time when watching our team play was magic, majestic and entertaining. It endeared people from other supporters to us. I'll admit, I did get frustrated with the way he used to back into the line... Now it's all the rage due to the crusher tackle rule. But he never did lie down, wobbly boot and all, which you can't get away with now.

Lets just keep on signing nuffies then

Addo-Carr next year
Harry Grant the next
Throw in a couple more big mobile forwards along the way

Quality signings need to start somewhere
If we keep on waiting for someone else it will never happen
If we can get him we get him
Obviously the $ amount must be kept under control
$800,000 a year no way
$650,000 a year a little reluctant yes
$500,000 a year hell yes
Who would argue with that

I liked the idea of Trell playing fullback; that is still a work in progress.
Turning now to Addo Carr, if we were lucky enough to get him, I was just reading comments by Coach Bellamy who has given his blessing to JAC converting to a handy full back.
Again, I like his X factor.
He will want to prove himself.
I hope things work our way.for once.

Heighno was poorly coached in the last 2 years of his tenure with us. Sheens asked him to run straight at the markers regardless of the situation. Sheens was truly cooked in those years, he had some crazy ideas. It's like he was trying to get himself sacked. Perhaps he was suffering from Alzheimer's.

Bunty Afoa

Bunty Afoa is on our radar as far as I know but we still don’t get that experience and leadership.

If there’s no good options for a forward leader who’s in their prime for next season then we should just spend the money elsewhere. Chase JAC and Staines who can stick around for our future and chase forwards in 2022 when heaps are off contract. That to me seems a much better option than holding up our cap in Tamou who I don’t think will offer much.

Well said mate, agree totally.
