I’d love to see WT try to do a double deal with Garner and Packer with WT paying a large part of Packer’s contract

Problem is that Manly is a bit too cold for Russel's feet.

Its an enigma isnt it? One hand just a little earlier there was talk of trying to get Packer medically retired with his feet, then more recently his feet were ok, and now that his feet were cold and he had to leave a game early. Hardly a confidence builder for a game that is mostly played in the winter season.....

But, I try to do a double trade or go the medical retirement route if available. He just cant sit it out for another season. WT have to have a come back.

Interesting here. As a replacement should we be taking a similar approach to Manly and looking at a long-term contracted player that appears to not be the first choice?

Also Andrew Davey was rumoured to be going to Manly. Off contract 2020 I would think if Garner heads to Manly he would be a great pick up as depth.


That Matterson guy goes ok - he would be worth looking at.

In a strange way I think Russ still has plenty to offer unfortunately it won't happen at WT'S due to the perceived or real differences with Madge lets hope someone out there is desperate for a front rower and if we have to contribute something so be it

Des is a stats guy, don't know how he'll feel about Russ's 16 metres a game unless we're including decoys.

I am assuming the schmuck is Brayden Trindall who was pretty good in the halves when Johnson and Towsend were out. Overplayed his hand last week at hooker though, certainly not lacking in confidence.

I don’t mind Garner bar the odd defensive lapse, but if you look at Blore and Luci, they’re bigger bodies. I reckon Madge wants to play a certain way that it not overly suited to Luke. When he can line them up, he does hit hard and can run a reasonable line - he just needs to find the right setup for him.

If we lose Garner to Manly could BJ be converted into an impact forward?

BJ's problem is his motor. He can't defend properly in the centres, he'll be gassed after 10 minutes in the backrow unless he drops some weight and ups his work rate significantly.

And doesn’t have any brain explosions...and makes better defensive decisions...

I think the smaller, more mobile 2nd rowers like Garner that find themselves stuck between centre and 2nd row are ideal for one of the bench spots. They are more likely to find space at the end of a game when the defence is tired and they can cover centre, 2nd row or lock if there is an injury.

I would much rather have Garner than MCK on the bench or starting 2nd row to cover injury or suspension.

Wests Tigers cut eight players from roster

Tigers coach Michael Maguire is preparing to hit the transfer market with eight players departing the club this week, opening the door for several high-profile players at Concord.
It’s a brutal game, rugby league. The 2020 NRL season has only just finished for the bottom eight sides but they’re already making moves for next year’s campaign.

And it’s bad news for a host of players whose NRL futures are up in the air after being told they’re not wanted by their current clubs. Canterbury kicked off the clean-outs last week when eight players were told their services are not required beyond this year.

After missing out on the finals series for the ninth straight year, the Wests Tigers have made similar moves with eight players departing the Concord club this week.

Who’s left: Benji Marshall, Chris Lawrence (retired), Elijah Taylor, Matt Eisenhuth, Dylan Smith, Robert Jennings, Oliver Clark, Harry Grant (loan)

Analysis: The farewell of Benji Marshall and retirement of stalwart Chris Lawrence dominated the headlines last week but behind the scenes another five players were released to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Two non-Sydney clubs have expressed preliminary interest in Marshall, who is keen to play on in season 2021.

Coach Michael Maguire has also opted not to re-sign utility forward Elijah Taylor, who revealed his management had been in talks with rivals in the hope of securing a deal next season.

Since making his debut in 2017, Eisenhuth has played 70 games in Tigers colours but like Taylor is not part of Maguire’s plans moving forward.

Outside back Robert Jennings is also on the look out for a new home after he was cut from Maguire’s 30-man roster.

Boom hooker Harry Grant, who was on loan from Melbourne, will re-join the Storm.

The moves open the door for the club to hit the player market.

Melbourne flyer Josh Addo-Carr remains a recruitment priority but it’s understood Canberra’s Jordan Rapana is now also on the club’s radar.

Analysis: Last week, the Bulldogs announced eight players — including Kieran Foran, Aiden Tolman and Marcelo Montoya — were leaving the club at the end of the season.

The roster overhaul has opened the door for the incoming coach to target not only the game’s brightest prospects like Melbourne’s Brandon Smith and Penrith’s Matt Burton but more experienced players like Benji Marshall.

With Foran leaving and new recruit Blake Green (ACL) unlikely to be available for the opening rounds of the season, Marshall could be a potential suitor for a club that could do with an experienced playmaker to help guide its stable of young halves - Jake Averillo, Brandon Wakeham and Lachlan Lewis - in season 2021.

New club sponsor and pub baron Arthur Laundy told The Daily Telegraph he has his sights set on Penrith back Charlie Staines and halfback Burton. Laundy is expected to make a 900km road trip to personally visit Staines’ family in Forbes and Burton’s family in Dubbo, to help get the respective deals across the line.

Yeah good call ....but if he is prepared to play in the ESL he will still get good money and then it isnt a good deal
