Sorry i'm new to all of this, what do you guys mean we need players with depth??? Whats depth in nrl terms

Where you have too many good players to choose from so you can't fit them all into the side. Then if there are injuries or suspensions, you can bring in players of similar class to the ones that are missing, as opposed to several classes below as has been our case for a long time.

Someone who is a handy backup that can come in if someone gets injured or is underperforming

Basically just means that we need to sign players for the lower grades and back up players. We can not just sign the super star players, every team needs to have players at all different ability and pay levels to be able to effectively manage the cap.

Roosters, bronco's, Canterbury they have rosters that run very deep, from the outside looking in, way past the limit of the salary cap, so you can make your own conclusion as to whether they are doing this depth thing legally or not.

You know guys who have substance, good blokes who understand how their team mates are feeling, not just there in the good times but in the bad times as well. Someone who reads poetry, Nietzsche and Frost, Someone who is a shoulder to cry on when times are tough, someone who may not be able to do his job on the field but can really be a good guy to have around the club. Oh wait scratch that, that was our old recruitment policy!

Just go with what the sensible guys said.

There's a news report saying we've signed Heath Gibbs, described as a "boom Newcastle youngster" who scored 3 tries against us in a recent U20s game. Apparently he plays centre or second row. Anyone know anything about him?

From 9 News / Mole Website:

Boom Knights utility Heath Gibbs bagged a hat trick against the Tigers in the NRL's under 20 competition last month - so the Tigers claimed the ultimate revenge on Newcastle today.

The Tigers swooped on Gibbs, signing the 19-year-old centre or second-rower on a three year deal which will start in 2018.

The Dubbo born youngster is one of the best up-and-comers in the Knights’ ranks and his defection is a blow to Nathan Brown’s plans for the future.

The Tigers continue to spend big money, with Gibbs the 12th new face signed by coach Ivan Cleary for 2018.

He is expected to train in the pre-season with the full-time squad and be given his chance to shine in the pre-season trials.

A smart signing by our club. Well done.

I am pretty sure it is not big money, but those idiots who pass as journalists just keep sticking the boot in.
Any way I hope the kid kicks on and becomes a star, a kid from Dubbo, go you good thing.

Why does the article state "The Tigers continue to spend big money" are they suggesting we paid overs for him or that we are simply filling up the vacant seats on the bus??

Heath is a good young player. Disappointed to lose him as a Knights fan, thought he may have played some first grade for us next season. He's listed as a second row/centre but I think he'll end up as a big centre/winger. Decent goal kicker too.

Sounds promising.

Interesting. Big Pre-Season and may find himself in the frame. Young kids with plenty of talent tend to get a good crack if they have a decent pre-season such as Tedesco in 2012, Aloiai in 2016 and Suli this year. Welcome big fella

Though to be fair I was a fan of Chance Peni at the Knights as well and he didn't exactly work out well.

I thought he would come on too, I think when he was continually over looked he gave up, so while his dedication is questioned, so was the head coach and his ability to pick a good side.

Peni's definitely missed by the ISP side this year….

As for the Gibbs signing..new blood was needed a good step when confirmed...

So a club like the Roosters they have 30 players of NRL standards most other clubs have about 4 or 5 depth players of NRL standard.
That's why we need some more players that can fill into the NRL team without affecting the team.
Plus the more quality players you have in each position it puts pressure on all the players to preform or visit the reggies coach.

I'm always in favour of signing up and coming youngsters from other development pools - mixes up the talent, the culture, the energy that they can bring.

Many of them won't work out but it's good to take an external view at other development pathways, sometimes some clubs (like us) get too fixated on our own development pathway, identify kids really young and fail to see early enough when it's just not working out, because of the time and energy we've committed.

And sometimes a change of scenery and opportunity is exactly what a player needs to succeed, rather than an open door from the U15s through to FG.

Gibbs signing is a good move by the club Steve Marstars from Dragons would be another good pickup.
We should have a look at some of the Sharks juniors as well.
