Reality is there isn’t 2-3 marquee style players on the market.

There are some good players, some rising talent and fringe players up for grabs.

Issue is in a competitive market where a few clubs have cash we either have to take huge risks or we go the slow burn - pay huge overs or buy for price, invest in yet to be known players and grab out of sorts players to hopefully build a competitive squad which may take another 2-3yrs to see the benefits of.

We suck and not alot of current 1st graders would jump from the storm etc to come here unless they got well compensated & even then most pick winning over the cash anyway.

TBH after watching Hynes do it again last night. He is the real deal. He is 100% a marquee player. Demands the ball every single set and makes consistent correct decisions. Not to mention his support play. He literally backs up almost every hit up.

Can play anywhere.
I'd like him in the centres for us.

I like him at 1. I’m wondering if Gus is right and Laurie’s best position is 6.

It’s really hard to judge because we somehow haven’t worked out how to use him properly in attack at fullback.

It baffles me that we haven’t worked out how to run an effective block play that gives Laurie some room to make a decision. Every other fullback in the game gets that opportunity.

We’d have to go very hard for him @ 1 for any chance

It’s sin we don’t have two specialist wingers what is the club doing?

All that plus he kicks too.
If only this wasn't a wish.

I think we have to remember the last 2 years we have lost our best player at the end of the season that really really hurts if we had matterson at the club still playing the way he was when he was here it would be huge

Agree, but Reynolds has gone to the Bronc’s for less money than the Sharks offered.
He did mention that the Bronc’s sent a senior delegation down and the Sharks an assistant?
We may have learnt from that, as we did send our most senior delegation up to supposedly talk to a couple of players?

Just on that delegation travelling together, in most companies this is banned, because if anything was to happen, then company management/direction is in disarray?

Whereas we have no problem with all of the players on the same flight. Tiger Air has already crashed.

Whatever the Bulldogs paid for Burton they got a bargain.
He's got it all.

These are the signings we need to make. We've done this with Stef, Blore and Laurie and even both Simpkins. We just gotta keep doing it and getting players like Burton.

No point judging the club on players you miss, much more sound to judge them on the players they actually do sign.

So are we seriously going to let the broncos have a free run at Hynes? I know it probably depends on us taking some of their players but we would be silly to not have a go for him as well

I hope we are talking to him

What is his background? Is he a Queenslander? That’ll likely be a huge factor in his decision.

Nah he’s from the central coast originally

Agreed. I mentioned the guys they've signed that are good. We just need more of it every season.

honestly some are on this forum are deluded --

Douehi better 6 than Burton - dumb.

Cini, Kei, Fitzgibbon and any other backs we have in Reserve Grade -- are never going to be amazing first graders.... just because we are winning games in that competition means nothing when the gap between the top 6 and the bottom 10 teams (in NRL) and those players in reserve grade cant crack the bottom 10 teams .... Has anyone actually watched how slow reserve grade is?

We are so used to mediocrity that we are hopeful of our amazing juniors (by the way - that is what every club says about their juniors).

People saying that Taiperi (spelling) is the next superstar??? Like really... you know who the next superstar is - SAM WALKER - SUALI - WALSH - players who can come into first grade at 18 and kill it. We do not have a next superstar because if we did he would be debuting in first grade this year or absolutely killing it in Reserve Grade.....

We had amazing juniors when Benji and Robbie were killing it as teenagers. Maybe there are some in Flegg but they are so far off and again if they were amazing the media would be frothing over them.

We need top line talent.... period.... proven winners... top 6 teams talent... maybe some off cuts from other teams that aren't performing.

And if Douehi is captain of this team help us all... yes he's passionate but he is not a group motivator because he is so tough on himself ... and he's not a superstar that other players are going to respect or gain confidence from .... and before others say he is a superstar... yes he's had some good games for us but we are coming second last! I'm not sure how many other team he would be a starter at in #6 maybe a few at Center.

And if im wrong about any of this.. you can bring this post up and ill come to a game and eat my hat in front of you all🙂

After watching Manly today - some of those forwards and backs smashing team --- we are SOOOOO MEDIOCRE.

Our only bet is that Hastings comes next year and is the BUY of the year. Otherwise they'll sack Madge and we'll start the next 5 year rebuild.

Sorry to be the bearer of reality but we have zero at the moment. Unless we buy some players we're simply shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.

Bulldogs offered more money for Burton plus had the player coach connection, my concerns about Madge are his team selections and failure to improve the team in the areas that need it,

* Choosing Leilua and Roberts as starting centres over Momirovski who would of been the smarter choice

* Nofoaluma re-signing (4years) who has always had defensive issues

* Team selections and use of the bench often not making sense

* Releasing Thompson who in hindsight is a better winger than any other player here

Every player you mentioned is pretty ordinary though. Switch the names around and I reckon we're still at the same place.

None of the players are game changers, Joey and Roberts at least had the potential to be and that is why they were signed. As an attempt to get an ordinary squad into the finals.

Trouble is, you need 30 players to complete a squad so you need to sign someone, anyone, for each of those positions. What we've got is about the best we could do. We moved on a few bums but we've still got a few more to go. Unfortunately it's a slow process.

I agree with most of that. But, I reckon Thompson was the only player anyone wanted from our roster. He is a great player
