John Bateman is edging closer to an NRL return less than 12 months after walking out on the Raiders to go home.

Bateman went to market last year but couldn’t get a sufficient offer and instead opted to return to England on a long-term contract.

But the Englishman’s partner is said to be homesick and wants to return to Australia.

That’s put a number of clubs on alert, with The Daily Telegraph’s Dean Ritchie telling the Big Sports Breakfast that the Wests Tigers were emerging as a potential destination for the Test back-rower.

“It was a whisper over the weekend and now it’s become the talk of a number of clubs,” Ritchie said.

“There’s no offer yet, but he’s over there in England playing for Wigan at the moment.

“He’s married to an Australian and there’s a suggestion she’d like to come home.

“It’s in an embryonic stage, and clubs are monitoring it. I certainly think given we don’t know what price he’ll put on himself.

“If he comes back with a bit of value there would be clubs jumping at him.

“I think the Tigers would look at him as he’s the player they need and obviously Michael Maguire’s link to Wigan.”

We have comfortably enough money to get Bateman and Thompson and still have enough money to go after a centre and a winger. They should be doing everything they can do get these guys.

I watched Wigan last game Bateman no where near the player he was at Raiders maybe a return to NRL might lift him if he's coming I suppose Curtis Scott won't be 🤣🤣🤣🤣

There’s obviously underlying reasons for indifferent form if he wants to return to Australia so soon.

Could easily still be the best second-rower in the world imo.

It is true Bateman is not playing well in ESL,a wife who is reportedly homesick and unhappy can effect a players form.i would be fine getting him at a realistic price which is based on his current form and not what he used to be with incentives built in if he can find his Canberra form.As for people suggesting Thompson at 850k which is what he wants i doubt if i could think of a worse purchase. The judiciary will keep Thompson off the field a lot in 2022 and future years
