Like the rest of you, I was hoping for a more uplifting signing than that of Wakeman, but hey, the season starts in a matter of weeks and our WT needed a backup in the halves.

Regarding the other current topic above, I am happy with Staines providing an option and/or competition at the back this season.

Wakeham was coached by Wayne Lambkin when he attended Westfields SHS.
But yeh pretty meh signing.

Pretty sure he was on the Wing in ressies as well,
With Turuva and Longi seemingly more preferred...

That also could have something to do with the crazy money he was on and Panthers trying to give him the tap....

In 22 NSW Cup Staines played fullback and they moved Turuva to the wing. Granted it was like 4 or so games but in each of them he wasn’t ordinary at the back.

I don't mind Wakeham as a back up at all as we need one but I don't want to waste our last spot in the 30 on him tbh.
I thought he was under contract with dogs this year and taking him off there hands just creates a spot for them regardless of salary. The dogs seem to have unlimited money but limited spots.

we need a backup half. we lost Hastings, Madden, Peachey and Fa'amanu Brown, all of which could do a job in the halves, and replaced them with no one. if Brooks or AD go down that is dangerous business. Wakeham is a necessary member of the top 30.

Fiji Bati. Take him over Flannagan
any day, the dogs r stuck with him

I don't know, it's an odd signing for me. We have Will Smith who is a much better first grader then Wakeham. If Brooks gets hurt, a makeshift Laurie or Smith provides a lot more IMO.

Waste of a roster spot if it's top 30. If it's NSW cup contract then fair enough

Tigers did already sign Will Smith, who has been known a five-eighth on some occasion.

But yeh, hypothetically Brooks/AD go down this season our least worst option would probably have Laurie to 7/6, while Smith slots to fullback. Wakeham is at least a minor upgrade from Madden.

I'm not advocating that Wakeham or even Flanagan for that matter, are good players, BUT......the Bulldogs forward pack is AT BEST as good as the Tigers over the last couple of years. Which is to say- they got beat up on a lot.

Hard for any halves, particularly young, developing halves, to succeed in those situations.

All you have to do is work your way through our top 29 + development + pathways players and see the yawning halves gap you find.
We have just three (yep 3) genuine halves and that includes big D (who in my opinion is a centre) and Smith who is not eligible for 1st grade until round 11.

An admission of our poor recruitment in the past and our current struggles to rectify that issue.

Most clubs have about half dozen budget buys in their top 30. Thats how they stay cap compliant. Our lastest signing gives us some half coverage and I would guess he is cheap. Of course there are a couple of clubs who don’t seem to have these budget players
