Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I read some where that there will be a bit of movement in the off-season as 4-5 clubs have spent all of 2021 cap but because it’s being reduced by 10% some teams will have to release players to get under the cap

I think I read that the NRL is pushing the players to all take a pay cut for next season instead of cutting the squads to 28. Player union will most likely be against it though, hopefully the NRL sort it out ASAP

Well it's been a few weeks sense @THE_POM lifted our morale so he either has no new news for us, Bad news for us or ........... Drum Roll...... some exciting news for us...

Maybe we set up a Go fund me page for The POM to entice him to update more often.. :grinning: :grinning:

From Brent Read latest article:

The NRL wants the players to take a 10 per cent pay cut. The players union only want to give up 5 per cent.

There will be little sympathy at NRL headquarters given head office has just bid farewell to 25 per cent of their staff.

The players risk alienating fans and officials if they continue to dig in their heels. The financial toll of COVID-19 has been devastating across the game.

Aside from the $120m dip in revenue this year, the game has forecast the total losses to be $400m across the clubs and head office over the next two seasons

Benji determined to extend his career
Don’t expect Benji Marshall to announce his retirement leading into his final game for the Wests Tigers this weekend.

Marshall deserves a fitting send-off, however he won’t call it quits on his NRL career despite little appetite from rival clubs for next season. Marshall is holding out hope of a club offering him a deal in the off-season once the salary cap is determined and a few pending player transfers open doors.

That is what happens when the media keeps pumping his tyres, the delusions become real.

What a way to destroy his legacy. Why can’t he just go out with grace.

Watched Chris Lawrence interview on Fox tonight and he was all class... Benji needs to watch him as that is how you finish up and will get a good job in footy afterwards.

It just goes to show you the club made the correct decision on Benji as its been like 3 weeks and no NRL club is after him.. Says it all really. Even an Injured Kieran F looks like getting a run at Manly next year and he is injury prone.
I said it weeks ago but Benji will regret not announcing retirement and getting a massive send off by the club and supporters..

As much as I think Rowdy's a top bloke and faithful servant for us over the years, his stunt he pulled just before the finals we missed out on yet again, because he was agitating for a new deal wasn’t exactly going out and showering himself in grace either.

No. If the cap is reduced then all salaries will get reduced by the same %

How can that occur legally of contracts are signed/executed? Or are you referring to salaries paid to officials?

Think its more of an "act of god" scenario paws. Everyone would have to agree to the reduction for the betterment and continuation of the game. If not, other avenues would have to be found.

Look forward to fringe first grade players who earn twice the average Australian wage lecturing everyone that times are tough and they can't afford to take the paycut.

Stop buying Gucci man purses and sandals and you'll be right.

Funny how they want to be partners in the game when things are going well and revenues are up and the cap goes up. The proverbial hits the fan and all of a sudden they scramble to look after themselves. Want all of the reward with no risk.

We'll see. I can see the NRL giving clubs who have spent their cap dispensation.

If the $ aren't available there is no option but to cut.

They might let them do it from their own pockets (leagues club grants etc.)

Do I understand this correctly? Are you guys saying the NRL might let clubs spend more than their allocated salary cap if they can afford it?

If clubs have already committed to the cap for next year under the previously agreed cap allocation, and they cannot eke out a deal with the players union in regard to reducing the cap next year, the NRL may have to allow clubs to top up the reduced grant out of their own pocket. I'm only specifically referring to the difference in the cap reduction.

The players all have contracts that were signed upon, legally binding. Clubs cannot just write off 10% of every players salary, unless there are very specific clauses in those contracts which I highly doubt there are.

Early team tips, sounds interesting, what has Madge got up his sleeve in regards to players leaving

Team tips: Scans have revealed cartilage damage to Josh Aloiai’s knee after initial fears he had torn his anterior cruciate ligament. David Nofoaluma has been cleared of injury while Sam McIntyre will need to pass concussion protocols to play this week. Alex Twal (illness) and Luke Brooks (suspension) will return to the side. This will be a farewell game for Tigers legends Benji Marshall and Chris Lawrence, and coach Michael Maguire hinted “a few other guys” also might be playing their last game in the famous strip.

Interesting. Maybe Mqueen will have a run.
