Brad Fittler is shocked that Wests couldn’t find a spot for Ryan Papenhuyzen at the club, stating the Tigers “got it wrong” on several decisions in recent years, per The Sydney Morning Herald.
Papenhuyzen, Josh Addo-Carr and James Tedesco will all come together for the first time as Blues players under Fittler on Thursday, having all departed Leichhardt in recent years.
Wests Tiger fans get constantly reminded about stars that got away, with some decisions the club have made in recent years amongst the worst.
Nine years without playing finals football and their Origin representative, Harry Grant, was on loan from the Storm.
Papenhuyzen was at Balmain before the 22-year-old chased his NRL dream with the Storm as Billy Slater was coming to the end of his career.
“I was disillusioned when the Wests Tigers couldn’t find a spot for him,” Fittler said of Papenhuyzen.
“There were a few [decisions] there where whatever they did during that period, it was just wrong.
“So someone got it wrong, whoever it was, and I don’t care.
“He [Papenhuyzen] has been awesome. Before the grand final I asked him, ‘Mate, how are you going to get your speed in with it being so wet?’
“And he just said, ‘I’ll find a way’. And when he took off for that [second-half] try … he found a way.”
Tedesco and Papenhuyzen both exited the club in 2017 and went on to win premiership silverware.
“I think that’s happened a lot,” said Tedesco, when asked about good players departing Concord. “Josh Addo-Carr has also won a few premierships now. But what can you do?”
Addo-Carr started at the Tigers but, like Papenhuyzen, left for Melbourne where he has won two titles.
The Tigers are now wanting to bring back Addo-Carr, who is hoping for a return home.
Addo-Carr said after the grand final he was bound for Sydney in 2021, but “no other team is like Melbourne”.
Papenhuyzen, who took out the Clive Churchill Medal on Sunday night, told the Herald he wouldn’t have been half the player he is today if he didn’t head to Melbourne.

There is nothing in that article to be upset about except WTs' inability to retain talent. I admit that is on the previous management and with Hartigan and Maguire at the helm we seem to be on a much better trajectory. PS I don't believe Fittler wrote the article.

I'm sure he didn't write it. There's no way he is that literate or smart. He hasn't graduated from writing with crayons.

That is exactly the role Robbie or Benji should have been filling for us. But for some reason it hasn't turned out like that.

I agree @paws. There is a lot of untapped potential in the inner-west, but moreso in the south-west.Why it hasn't surfaced so far, is beyond my knowledge. I hope it changes in the very near future.

It hasn't surfaced because most of them do not support Wests Tigers in my view.

They support who their parents supported before they moved to the new development areas in the SW of Sydney.

We have almost no chance to switch them over to us. We can try but it hasn't worked so far.

Jesus this infatuation with Benji being let go on Facebook has hit fever pitch. Fans of the club even going so far to say that they hope Benji puts on a clinic against us next year if he has signed with the Cowboys.

Is the get out clause an indication of his lack of desire or just plain insecurity? According to one media report Suaalii is a long strider but not quick? So not sure which events he would enter at the olympics? Long jump? Anyone know?

100% agree. Hope he get put on the sideline by nine for our games. Might have to remind him of that and the Storm shopping him this year and his coaching record at the roosters.

Not by a long shot...some already have him lacing it up t Wests Tigers in 2022

I do think Liddle is better than Harry... Harry is everywhere and very enthusiastic but Liddle has the smarts and very quick... that's my opinion and I already was shut down for having that opinion but all good... Liddle just needs to stay healthy, we already saw what he can do

They will soon figure out how to stop Harry

He is not better than Grant but he is a very good footballer.

It's what they and the Storm do. Take your big guns out to see the juniors, players that the prospective junior idolises. Good business practice imo.

Imagine being a young kid and having Benji Marshall trying to convince you to sign. Mate, I would listen.
