Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

It is a surprise how many people don’t follow the game but still comment here!🤔 It looks like quite a few never saw or read about Laurie, so it surprised them that he is 181cm/81kg ! Further, according to this mob, he cannot play FB, ‘because he is too small, he isn’t ready yet’!????🤔
How many times we heard this before?😡

He can rehab close to family

There may be a trade or $$$ advantage in it for us.

I understand we have a cover for him in Docker-Clay?

Walters seems a nice bloke (like his dad) but really not a great requirement for us.

I think we have another 2 to get by the end of this month?

My feeling is, it will be between Fitzgibbon, Robert-Davis or Ty Rodwell?

And one more at end of June.

Fitzgibbon looks super quick in the clips I’ve seen of him. Like the Fox. Looks the goods.

What about Gabbie (or is it Gebbie) from PNG? Is he here yet?

Gebbie, haven’t heard about him for a while?

Gebbie is this year's version of Curtis Rona. Or the 'game-changer' we were supposed to get last year.
There's been more unconfirmed sightings of Gebbie than of the Loch Ness monster.
Would be very surprised if he ever laces up a boot for our club.

Laurie’s size is abit of a concern,Papenhuyzen being such a lightweight his head and body have been put in some very dangerous positions when getting tackled.Tedesco is much bigger in size than Laurie or Paps,Sivo ran over Teddy last year,he wasn’t the same player when he returned

I agree Daine probably needs to gain 5kg in muscle (currently 83kg) to hold his own. However he'll be 22 this year and will fill out over the next couple.

In saying that, Brett Hodgson one of our favourite sons and one of the best fullbacks in the 2000 era played his career at 78kg.

Paps debuted at 82kg. He doesn't need to gain any weight if he can play well and Laurie has already held his own in first grade.

Agree.

How big was Ben Barba? His size wasn’t what kept him out of NRL.

If he was playing any other position than fullback I’d be concerned about his size but I think skinny zippy fullbacks are the future with the rule changes as long as they can leap okay for bombs and have a willing attitude in defence.

Agreed mate. Fullbacks can get away with being smaller, there's been small fullbacks since the dawn of footy. If he was a winger I would be concerned but he's not so not worried haha

I hope the Tigers extend the contracts of those they wish to keep fairly quickly. The sharks alone have 15 players off contract at the end of this year. There will be many cashed up clubs looking for players for 2022 .Thank God we have done such a good recruitment so far, it will become even harder with the arrival of another team predicted to come soon.

Yeah teddys technique was just bad in that tackle, seen much smaller blokes take down sivo that close to the line. Lauries size would only be a worry if he didn't have a huge skill set. Tamou came out and mentioned before that at training Daine used to regularly carve up the 1sts team at Penrith

Brad Parker took down Sivo in the same spot and he's built like a local bloke at my pub but did it because his technique was good

People need to stop worrying about size. If they're a good player that's all that matters, Laurie has a heap of aspects that favour him despite his smaller stature.

Couldn't agree more mate

Just on my previous post,I will give you a small example of what Im talking about...
Many years ago back when I was playing,we had a great kid playing in our juniors,he was strong, quick and loved playing rugby league..he went through to being an outstanding young player from u/12 through to u/18s..
Our fg needed a fullback to play for us as ours was out injured, they opted to give him a shot at fg because of how great he was playing..he played well the first week and he was given another chance the following week against the team who were leading the comp,he got hammered a couple of times and played completely opposite than the week before..
He went back to his age group and didnt even do well there...why ? he had his confidence knocked out of him by bigger hardened fgraders and never really recovered...
thats why you dont put all your faith into the young guys until they can prove they can handle the big arena....

I hear what your saying mate , and in principle I agree to an extent . Where I differ is , these kids are training with the first grade squad in full contact from the moment they get identified as being elite. Look at all the SG ball kids who were there all pre season . Throw in diet , training regimen, off field stuff , like how to deal with media , fans , leeches , their money etc , they just arnt even the same as 10 years ago , let alone 20 .
And even then most teams (not us under previous coaches not named sheens) will still blood them slowly . I think Simpkin will be an impact player. I think Laurie is too small at the moment , and Simpkins needs to hit the gym hard , as he has the natural size , but I would doubt the strength . Blore is ready to go , so is Stefano. I don’t know about Madden. We will see in the trials .
It’s

Thanks for your reply strongee and I agree that its much, much more professional for the kids these days and care is given in many areas of their life and not just footy...
My actual point was that some kids are more mentally and physically tough than others at their age, some develop a lot later, and you are right the coaching and development staff have a much more careful eye on them...
I can remember an incident a few years back when we had Matt Groat with us and he showed a lot of potential as a youngster ready for fg,JWH put a shot on him and I dont think Groat was ever the same since...just my take on things and I do appreciate you showing me the difference in my time playing up until now,all I can say is I wish I had the same technical and training staff back then that they have now...cheers mate...

Yea . Totally agree with you . I just think that’s identified way earlier . Mate I played with a 28 year old who , stepped out of the way when this big bopper was charging back at us . Made me look real stupid as I was next to him , and he went clean through. And if I’m honest , the reason I missed as well , was I was deciding how I was going to tackle him, instead of just tackling him .So age isn’t really a thing. If they don’t have it they don’t have it . I don’t think thier confidence is going to be ruined in first grade in today’s game . They do full contact mid week in 2021. And it’s pretty intense .

You are right, that age doesn’t matter. But to counter a component of your argument, confidence does, regardless of age.
The thing with confidence is it’s a case of the cart before the horse. Some can build up their confidence through sheer belief, rare, as most people build up their confidence as a result of their successful actions.

The problem with first grade, or any top level comp in sport is these opportunities are limited and can have much greater bearings then anything that occurs in lower grade.

It’s why I can’t stand all the general bagging of players in general. Nearly everyone of those kids have the talent to be a superstar. It’s just believing you can do it (without over believing) that sets the kids or the adults apart.

Who said that ? I thought people were worried about his strength and being manhandled , but for me the thing that worries me is injuries . The collision with guys who can bench 150 , deadlift 220 , and sprint the 40m in under 5 seconds . Especially if he’s as tough as guys in the know , claim . Jacob Liddle is a prime example . He’s what 24 ? And debuted at 19? That’s what I’m worried about. But you’re right , it’s literally the way we lost Paps . I hope you’re right.

Great post mate . It’s a weird one aye. Like if benji was a little less sure of himself would he be the greatest ever ? As he would have worked on his deficiencies, like the no looks to row 12. Or if he lost that confidence would he be like you said , just another dude ? Who knows

I would not trade Billy walters at all. Honest player and if liddle goes down we know he can handle hooker.

I would take the risk.

Hes out for the bulk of 2021.
Hes not required nor will he be staying in 2022
He can rehab close to family

Its a funny one, the club was definitely bring him out, but something must have happened.

Where would you play him, the club signed/re-signed laurie and nofa.

they got talau, bj, roberts and now Kei. Gebbie’s in the same situation he was in with the bunnies, behind a ton of people ?‍♂️

I agree I doubt he’ll ever lace up, if there was plans to I’m sure the WT would be putting more media coverage on it

The plan was for him to come out a train and trial contract with the view to putting him on a development contract.

Is there an age limit for development players ?

Not that I am aware of.

Great post mate . It’s a weird one aye. Like if benji was a little less sure of himself would he be the greatest ever ? As he would have worked on his deficiencies, like the no looks to row 12. Or if he lost that confidence would he be like you said , just another dude ? Who knows

And to add to that, what is achieved in training is no reflect of how they go in a game.
Because there are no consequences in training. You have one time, one chance to perfect a play. Something you may have done 100 times over the week before. There is only one instance of it in a game.
It’s why the average games played for an NRL player is under 50.

Size blah blah blah

Its the fight in the dog, not just the dog in the fight.

So many big strong boddies have lacked the agression, the smarts and the tenacity to succed.

Our new captain also said this of Laurie a month ago when things on an early release started hotting up;

"He stood out because he wanted to compete, and that's something we want here - players to compete on every play and to make your own luck. He's always competing and **deceptively fast and strong.**''
