The Mole: Bulldogs try to sign Eels gun
By The Mole

Canterbury want to sign Eels star Ryan Matterson for 2022 - and have taken a significant step towards their goal by linking up with NSW Cup team Mounties as their feeder club.

Playing for Mounties is none other than Ryan's younger brother Dean, who starred in a weekend trial against Penrith.

A 23-year-old five-eighth, Dean is extremely close to Ryan, who is three years older, and the pair have a goal of playing together in the NRL.

The duo have played one match together - for the Roosters in a trial in 2018 - before going their separate ways.

Ryan went to the Tigers and now Eels, while Dean moved to Wyong Roos, Blacktown Workers and now Mounties.

The Bulldogs have placed Ryan at the top of their wish list for next year - and having his brother on board may prove a major step to achieving their goal.

That won’t happen cause dean matterson is a very ordinary footballer

Could you imagine actually aligning with a feeder club for the sole purpose of being associated with the brother of a player you want to sign from somewhere else? What malarkey from The Mole.

Here's the reality: offer Matterson a big old wad of cash today and say "break your contract and come get it". The bloke has plenty of priors, he'll weasel and worm his way to that money.

Long way from happening’: Sticking point in Souths skipper’s contract talks

Rabbitohs’ captain Adam Reynolds concedes he and the club are a long way from coming to terms on his next contract with both parties not on the same page.

While 23-year-old South Sydney teammate Latrell Mitchell was able to negotiate a shorter deal with the club, Reynolds is 30 and at the other end of his career.

Sporting News reported Reynolds wants a long-term deal to give him security after nearly a decade of service to the Redfern club.

“It would be ideal (to stay at Souths), but in saying that, it’s probably a long way from happening at the moment,” Reynolds told Sporting News.

“We’ve started negotiations but we’re not right on the same page at the moment.

“I’d like to play for another three or four years. I’d like to sign for three years.”

Reynolds has scored 33 tries and 1,636 points for the Rabbitohs since his debut in 2012 and won a premiership in 2014, while guiding Souths to three preliminary finals in the last three seasons.

Despite some injury issues in 2015 and 2016, Reynolds has played over 21 games in all of the last four seasons and believes he has plenty more footy in him.

“I don’t really want to sign a couple of contracts towards the back end of my career,” Reynolds said.

“I’d like that bit of security. It’s something that we’re sorting out at the moment and hopefully we can come to a conclusion.”

Reynolds was made captain of the club by Wayne Bennett last season, which shows the high esteem he is held in by Souths.

It means the chances of both parties working to get a deal done are good, but Reynolds believes he has earned the right to get the deal he wants just as Mitchell has.

Reynolds is the halfback and a key playmaker with No.6 Cody Walker and is a prolific pointscorer who has represented the Blues in Origin back in 2016.

However he said contract negotiations won’t distract him from getting the job done on the field in 2021.

“It’s always on the mind but it won’t affect any sort of footy that’s being played,” Reynolds said.

“Obviously you’ve got worry about your future, it’s in the background, we’re sorting through it at the moment but we’re still a long way from getting it done.

Go hard for him. This guy is awesome.
Would love to have him. Didn’t I read we have $800k left in the bank. Get him now!

Some how I don’t think they will release there starting half back 2 weeks before the season starts haha

And I don't think Wigan will do that with Hastings either!

I would love for him to do it, purely just to watch the Eels fans who put so much energy into baiting Tigers fans over his conduct squeal like stuck pigs about him doing them dirty.

I stalked the Wigan forum and couldn't see any mention of if he has arrived yet. I think he has to do quarantine before he joins them for training by the sound of it. I had a look at their pre-season photos, man it looks cold and miserable there!

I'm pro-Brooks but I'd happily see the back of him if it meant we got Reynolds. he would transform this team into a premiership threat.

I still think Brooks at 6. Take the pressure off and just run the ball. Would suit him. Adam can go to centre

Buzz also hammering our recruitment is laughable:

“Recruitment has not been a strong point at the Wests Tigers. Judging by Benji Marshall’s lively performance and leadership in the All Stars, they have made another mistake in sacking the veteran five-eighth. He will be a handy pick up for the Rabbitohs.”

I hate Slothfield but why is that comment wrong?

I do think Benji time is up but considering how he played last year & the experience we have lost from an outside view in many judges would say the same.

Benji was terrible last year and little better the year before.Slothfield is a very poor judge

The law is always hammering home "Don't Drink and Drive"
In Sloth's case it should be" Don't Drink and Write"

I agree, but whatever you may think of the old buzzard, it's highly unlikely that he would ever drink and drive due to the possibility of spilling some.

Regarding Jackson Hastings the Club has had discussions but no offer has been made..no approach to Wigan to request a release..

Player 28 needs to be filled very soon looking externally but could also promote from within..Tuilagi doing all the right things impressing in the Trial on the weekend..
