"Jackson Hastings on his way back to Wigan Warriors"

https://www.wigantoday.net/sport/rugby-league/jackson-hastings-on-his-way-back-to-wigan-warriors-3157790

He posted on Twitter a picture of an emotional farewell with his family at Sydney airport, with the caption: 'Been fun, I'll miss you guys'.

Coach Adrian Lam told Wigantoday last week that he was happy for Hastings and Bevan French to have extended time at home with their families this year, given the disruption and length of the 2020 campaign, the two-week quarantine when they flew back before Christmas as well as the ongoing Covid pandemic in the UK.

“It’s been more beneficial for me as a coach that they stay in a healthy environment, Covid-free, with their families, and maintain their training," he said, reporting both had been following tailored training programmes.

Presuming his route back avoids countries on the government's red list, there is a 10-day stipulation to quarantine - but that can be halved if he tests negative after five days. Only then he can return to training.

Wigan play a friendly against Hastings' former club Salford on Sunday, 12 days before they start their Super League campaign against Leigh at Leeds.

Bevan French is expected to fly back soon.

The full-back returned home just before the first lockdown last year to see a sick relative and Lam says he was happy for French to spend as much time with his family as he can before coming back.

They’ll have a ton of money with half the team being off contract.
Funny thing is they’re concentrating nearly all of it on backs.

This has disaster written all over it... So much money spend on backs it's just funny to watch as its not us this time. Player are mainly going there for overs and it will bit them hard when they have no money left for the main areas...
Its hard to explain but for the first time in a Long long time I fully trust our recruitment team and coach on the decisions they are making and building the club for the bigger picture and not to win straight away. I hope Dogs get Staggs for 800k :grinning:

The more you spend on big name purchases the less you have for the players/depth who hold the team together.Throwing more money at their backs will not help their pop gun pack.

Likewise, I guess their mass clean-out answers that, but they still have 30 spots to fill

Next year
Staggs (if they get him) - $800k
JAC - $600k?

These two are well over 10% of there cap?

God knows what the blokes signed this year are on?

One injury will see them go the toilet.

They would have ok money for Burton as well. Corey Allen wouldn't have been cheap considering he just played Origin!

plus they still need to spend on a hooker and at least 2-3 better forwards. Their depth chart will be horrible, better hope you don't get any injuries

There were rumours about the Dogs sniffing around Liddle, so I suppose it all depends on how Jacob performs this season and whether WT re-sign him.

I'm with Sparten on this one, a roster cleanout is on the cards.
Madge has basically said it will take time to get the right team on the park. By mid year Madge and Hartigan will have a good idea of who they want going forward. The club is far more professional now, and "maybe" players will be shown the door. We have at least 6 players that need to perform and if not, it's 'goodbye dick".

Harsh, but I think this worked for the Roman legions.
Of course I don't think Eunuch's make particularly good players. So you would probably have to fire the player as well.

Going off the nrl.com predicted line up... 7 of the 17 have never played for the WTs before.

...and If Mbye is out that maybe 8 of the 17

I am more than happy if we don’t see ‘experienced’ players like Packer, McQueen, Reynolds et al never again in the WT jersey.!

DWZ on good dollars as well, not to mention Burton, Jackson, Thompson, Allan too name but a few, will take some dodgy accounting to pull all this off

dogs have been looking at Liddle for awhile, depends whether they sign Brandon Smith or not, I think if they miss out on B Smith then Liddle will be a target for them

It’s an interesting strategy. Load up on young outside backs in the prime of their career.
If anything our 2018 recruited Cleary team showed us that you don’t need to spend your entire cap making sure all 30 players are nrl experienced. In that year I think only Tyson Gamble was the only player yet to play nrl.
I guess in the case of the bulldogs. They are very happy with their forward pack and don’t see any reason to completely transform them.
If you think about their side. Their backs have had the most transitioning over the years.

Can’t imagine what others thought about us. How the hell did we fit Packer, Mbye & Reynolds into our cap and then have 17 other semi capable players to play instead of them.

Don't care about what's morally right or wrong. Hastings would be good get. I don't think it's about a pay rise, it's just the kid wanting to come home and obviously feels he's ready for another crack at Nrl. These things happen all the time. Gareth Ellis still had a year or 2 on his WT contract, but he wanted to go home and we let him. Another Nrl club will grab Hastings if we don't.

hopefully they will.

It's not just the cap, but the fact they can attract players like that.

We've been a much more attractive club than Bulldogs for years.
