Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I can remember mentioning this a couple of seasons ago in regards the widening gap between the Top 8 and bottom 8

And widely copped it

Bit like a dog fight in Formula 1 while 7th ,8th ,9th ,10th and 11th battle away for a few meagre points the Top 3 lap the field .....

It'd be worse than what it is now. If they implemented a draft system that might help.

I doubt if he will ever have a draft system in RL because of the legal ruling(Terry Hill) that it was a restraint of trade. The only reason it is still legal in AFL is that none of the mincing fairies who play the game dont have the gonads to take it to court

All we need to do is have transparent third-party deals. And have those deals go through the NRL not the clubs.

Certain clubs offer apartments/jobs for partners/promises post-career, etc. And if that is all reported the NRL might just see the imbalance and start including them in the cap. But something tells me they benefit from turning a blind eye...

The new rules have widened the gap between the top teams and the battlers. Our roster is better but we are no hope of bearing Storm, Raiders, Roosters, Rabbits Panthers, Eels, Knights unless they play poorly. Basically at best we are battling Sharks, Titans, Eagles, Warriors, Dragons for 8th spot.

Only players off contract that would make a difference to this would be Jaydn Sua, Dale Finucane, Brandon Smith, Xavier Coates.

There are no halves available and there is a scarcity as it is in the NRL. We are way off and it will take years to correct our young players have to be our stars.

Nothing lasts forever man . Look at the Raiders , they were basically us before we became the 9th placed team . They’d always finish 8th-9th , and do nothing . Basically in football purgatory , which is where we are now . None of the players they signed to get themselves out would have been stars at the time , and that was just after a period of losing the stars they did groom. Sound familiar ? I think the talent is in the squad . It’s just now a waiting game if they can take the next leap . Nobody saw Jack Wighton as anything other than a very good centre , borderline origin . And look at what he has done for himself . George Williams was likened to that Parra eels “star” pommy signing a few years ago in the halves . Even the batemans and Whiteheads of the world weren’t world beaters before the put on the Canberra milk jersey .

The panthers have built themselves into the force they are as well . A few years ago everyone was mocking the 5 year plan . The roosters ,storm and rabbits , have a second salary cap man , there’s nothing we can do . That’s not going to change if you scrap the salary cap . It’s no difference to the LA dodgers , NY Yankees and Boston Red Sox . But the Red Sox arnt good anymore . The dodgers only just won a World Series after years of wasted money , and the Yankees despite all the money they spend haven’t done anything for years . The smart teams ride the wave , they build to a peak hopefully that being a premiership , and then knowingly let the wave head towards the trough , hoping that it’s just a small one .
I think this is the way forward. We are just all impatient as we don’t know where on the wave we are . Are we near the peak , near the trough etc. The only thing I can confidently say is we are definitely on the upward trajectory. But I get it , that’s not comforting at all , as we want to win now.

Brisbane have one of the largest salary caps of any team in the comp and look where they are.

I still think we are building well.

100% spot on... Ive been saying for years now the TPA are not controlled and the big clubs are rorting the system with the NRL turning a blind eye. You hear B Fletcher joke about it all a time but we are not stupid.
Paying for rent, Golf memberships, Partners jobs etc.... The list goes on but what ticks me off the most is the the NRL pull us up for the Farah job offer are he retires was a joke. It wasn't offered to him to keep him at the club or to make him go to save salary cap it was just a great gesture for a long serving player.. I could name heaps of players now with jobs at there clubs and bet it was arranged when they were players to assist with salary..

Anyway I feel better now getting it off my chest :grinning: :grinning:

Couple of things.
10th place was where Canberra sat.
I had my eye on Whitehead before he went to Canberra, in the ESL games he was involved in he was one of the best, a real dog and bone attitude. So a great pick up for Stick and started the ball rolling for the pommy army calling the cold of Canberra home.
Wighton looked like he could of been a really good centre, covered Croker for almost a whole year there but then covered a shortage at fullback for them. Made a decent fist of it but was always earmarked to play in the halves. As was his position through all his development years at Canberra.

In regards to a team standing out and either winning the comp or making the final game the ingredients are always the same.
A unified squad.
Limited injuries or great injury cover.
Great defence.
Hardheaded seniors with talent and a dog and bone mentality.
A sprinkling of young talent with a no fear attitude
But most importantly a break out star
that hasn’t been heard of from the year prior
The breakout star is important as he is usually the difference in the sides.

Correct Earl, we did what not many clubs want to do and is buy a lot of talented youngest and bring them up together and keep the Diamond in the rough ones to build around. Once we offload the Packer & Mbye $$ we can afford to target the team real needs.. Just need to start winning some games

matterson was excelling when at the tigers and if i recall he was in the state of origin squad for 2019.He and his manager portrayed the tigers as being at fault and sought a release.
A less than spectacular 2020 for the fellow and now parra want to flick him.
don't think there will be many wests tigers supporters feeling empathy for him.

You watch .. he'll end up back at the Rorters to replace Boyd Cordner once the doctors wont let him play footy anymore and make him retire.

I get people dont like the Roosters but you should be more aware of who they are and how they operate.

Not a chance in hell theyll take him back.

They identified him as soft and a player not worth the risk.

Best recruitment and retention in the league.

Wing, Second Row and potentially half (pending first 6 rounds of Brooks and AD) should be the priority IMO. A lock would be good

Jury out on Liddle, but Simpkin is the long term option, just need to bring him along slowly this year.

It's early days, but it feels like we may have solved the fullback problem. Hopefully Laurie gets through the year injury free and plays every game at 1 for us.

I'd be going after:

Wing: Coates, Gagai (most people have turned off him, still a good player at the right price), Tupou, Sivo
Second Row: Fitzgibbon, Chrichton, Su'a
Half: Reynolds, Walker, Hastings

Tupou is overated

Used to think that but he is a great player, would most probably be top of the list on my winger wishlist.
Makes a heap of tough carries out of his own end and is unbeatable in the air.
He will unfortunately put that all on display this afternoon. Great player.

Exactly. You don't win comps, play origin and have a long career at the Roosters if you can't play. Just ask Kyle Flanagan.

I'm starting to think Brooks can have a decent season this year,I think playing a top team like the Raiders round one wasn't ideal and the team forgot about the game plan and made too many errors. With Madge and players backing Luke I think he will start to play some good footy, the only thing that does worry me is the long kicking game where I'm hoping douehi may help.

If Garner doesn't do his two stupid plays we are in that game all game
A possible win was on the cards

I don’t understand why Aidan seezer doesn’t get a look in 2 years ago he got the raiders to Gf with a lot of help I might add but surley he has to be better than brooks I remember seezer kicking 3 field goals in 10 mins to beat sharks

big forward pack got several t the GF
no thanks the pommy half would have probably one raiders the GF that year

Good article in yesterday’s SMH by Malcolm Knox basically saying how the salary cap and the new rules are widening the gap.
