Long Term i don't think garner is the answer on the left hand side, i don't see him keeping up current form (i think he is our best second rower ATM) and i also get the impression he is a bit toxic. a strong defensive second rower would be good on that edge. jayden sua? if Gildart comes here as good as he was in ESL then we might be good on centres, but i cant see that being the case and think we need to find one. Billy smith seems to be the only one off contract worth a look at (unless we get J.Moz and try for a class one in 2022) but maybe look at connor watson as an option?

Just looking ahead..... we have 22 players now signed for next season (includes Gildart and the COs on JTJ and Joey).
Of those coming off contract this year I would look at re-signing only Liddle, Mikaele and Seyfarth. Let go of Walters, MCK, Cini, Amone, Packer.

Amone? Why?

Amone has played good games in reggies had one short stint against St George should get more game time over the coming weeks then we can form an opinion

I agree that we haven't seen anything of him at the top level, and be very happy if he proves me wrong, however my thought on Amone was that we are reasonably well covered for props/middles (assuming resigning of Mikaele and Seyfarth) with Tamou, Twal, Uto, Musgrove, Offa as well, plus some good young guys in reggies that are coming through.
Considering that we may have only 4-5 spots, as I mentioned, available to buy in players, if we were to use one spot for a middle we should be looking at a top flight, gun middle and I am not sure Amone is that guy. Otherwise perhaps we should be using those spots for at least one more edge forward and a few better backs.

You do understand there's a whole reserve grade side that needs middles as well yeah?


Yeah! Aiming a little higher than using up those spots in our top 30 for reggies players. I am suggesting top 17 players is who we need if we are fair dinkum about finals.

Finals for this season?

Wishful thinking I'm afraid - I was thinking about next season!
But I still haven't given up, yet.

Hynes is good but where would we play him? We have a fullback, we have a 5/8 and he's not a halfback.... he'd be an excellent 14 but he's not leaving storm to be a utility.

Wherever he wants . At this stage he's a more complete footballer than our7, 6, and 1.

'Wherever he wants' is not good business - unless we move on Brooks he doesn't really have a spot here and can understand why the club wouldn't be after him.

We need wingers and centres and second rowers a lot more than another spine player. He's good but I don't see him playing as well outside of the Melbourne system either.

He has a spot at 1 in my team - You say we have a FB, we can always do with a FB that is a lot better and Hynes eats Laurie at the moment. Laurie has much to learn and I can see another Brooks scenario coming up, 3 or 4 seasons we'll still be saying, "Oh! he will be a lot better next year." Laurie needs to go back to Reggies like Simpkin and learn his trade - e.g. organise the team line, learn to tackle, improve an almost non existent kicking game, chime into the backline and be part of it. When he can do all that he will be as good as Nico Hynes.

As far as playing outside the Melbourne system - he can do it himself (not like a Blair that had one job to do) but how did players like Kimmorley, Widdup and GI go after they left the Storm. Hynes makes his own breaks, sets up plays for others etc. he does not totally rely on other players. This was no more in evidence than last weekend.

Yep can't say anything against Laurie even if it would benefit the team. Lol

Great news on Liddle and Tuilagi - that's the first piece, hopefully Mikaele and Seyfarth are re-signed and then that makes 26 in the NRL squad for 2022, including the Club Options for Joey and JTJ. Also assumes Mbye stays at the club.
Somehow can't see us extending both JTJ and Joey and I feel Mbye will move on as part of some deal or another. So maybe 5-6 spots to fill.
Looking at the 2022 squad as it stands - I really think it is the best squad we have had for a long, long time in terms of quality of players and least amount of "dead wood". The guys responsible for this (Hartigan, Madge, and whoever else) have done a good job to turn our roster around, so far. What happens with the remaining spots is the billion dollar question and what will decide our future finals fate.

Doeihie played well at 5/8, he's a very good footballer, but in my mind an even better centre. I think he cramps the backline a bit , and will eventually lose his impact there. The side at the moment at least appears more balanced and Doueihie could be something special out wide. The extra room suits him, and the side. I thing Hastings and Brooks will work well together, and with Gildart , AD and DWZ on the wing , we are on the right track, with money to spare.
