Packer and mats signed after woods rejected our offer. Am I mistaken?

He officially signed with Dogs on the 28th of April - exactly a week after the club placed the deadline on them.
We gave the extension offer a month before.
Ivan was announced on the 3rd of April and IIRC talks began with Josh Reynolds and Packer, a week after.
Ivan publicly stated his desire to keep Woods on, which was why I felt it odd when Woods [proclaimed](https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/aaron-woods-says-if-ivan-cleary-had-arrived-earlier-he-may-have-stayed-at-wests-tigers-20170722-gxghvq.html) had he known this he would've stayed.

But it also clearly shows Woods knew very well Ivan was our coach and was stating his willingness to see what type of coach he was.

We may have messed it up by offering Packer a whack but the way negotiations panned out and from Wood's own words from [this article](https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/teams/tigers/canterbury-bulldogs-make-massive-play-to-poach-wests-tigers-skipper-aaron-woods-nrl-media-watch/news-story/374f2b4d8180b3c2a49b260b09a9f51a), it was only ever about the money for him.

If Mitch Moses deserves a thrashing for his behaviour then Woods does too. He was our team captain and supposed to lead by example but instead he not only gave us the run around by contradicting himself but threw the club under the bus.

Both are scum

Thats exactly what happened.
The irony is that Woods played his career best footy under Ivan in that final 20 or so rounds...then disappeared to the Dogs without trace.
He wld have been a 15 year or so player witrh WTs,and been remembered like a Roach or Kelly
...and made more $$ .See Benji has to how that strategy worked out...

He’s a grub who thought he was bigger than the club. Think of the Hooper interview where he threw the club under the bus. Around that time he was also a regular on NRL 360. He never once defended the club or spoke on behalf of the club. He was looking out for himself. To do all that as captain, made him one of the most selfish players I can ever remember.

No one in this forum would ever throw the club under the bus...

We’re supporters. Even if we do, we don’t walk away. Players on the other hand

He left under Cleary's watch. What's your opinion of Cleary, one of our greats? Ever talked Cleary up yourself?

I’m failing to see how that’s relevant? If he was loyal to the club, wouldn’t have mattered who the coach was.

Can't be bothered explaining...

No, please do. Don’t back down.

The Jason Taylor years were a nightmare from which it was going to be very difficult to recover. I had a conversation with Siro at the time who told me how frustrated Curtis was at being lied to all the time by Taylor. The players hated Taylor. Woods was the glue in a side when certain players were threatening mutiny. When the club shafted Taylor, who by the way was brought in to do a certain job, and signed Cleary, it really hit the fan. Woodsy wanted to stay. He was club captain and wanted to be a Tiger for life. He loved the Tigers and he thought they loved him. When Cleary offered a his old mate, a convicted criminal 200k a season more than the club captain, to play the same position, it kind of rubbed people the wrong way, particularly when Woods had only ever done his best for the club. He asked if he could be upgraded to the same money as the crim and was told to look elsewhere if he wanted more money. It's common knowledge now that we wasted 800,000k for 3 seasons when we could have kept, at the time, the best front rower in the game.

Sorry, but how long was there a contract on the table before Cleary was appointed. He could have been a leader and put pen to paper any time in the previous 12 months. The crim was signed after Woods decided he was too big for this club.

There are plenty of reasons why Woods/Teddy/Moses wouldn't sign why Taylor was coach. No player with any ambition would have signed a contract with the club then.

Well according to Tigerballs, playing under Cleary was a detriment too apparently. Ask Panther players if they think that’s true.

If what Tigerballs says is true it was the terms of the contract that Woods was unhappy about
with Cleary especially if he knew that they had offered Packer more - stands to reason that he would see what was on offer elsewhere.

Teddy always said he wanted to play finals footy. That had nothing to do with Woods that had every thing to do with the state of the club.

Oh that would be as opposed to the players who never want to play finals footy.

This is not his home.

Trashed us when we wanted and needed him.

I hope the club is very very aware of the anger held towards him.

I think most fans thought Woods was a great captain and footballer. And i also think very few blame him for what eventuated during that period of terrible management.

I'm not bitter about it myself, but I think you've misread the room entirely if you think very few people blame him for the manner in which he left. Woods' name is poison for a lot of folks.

If you were a manager in your workplace and your boss passed you over for a promotion and instead, hired a new bloke who'd just gotten out of gaol and gave him more money, you'd just say "thanks"?

It was the way he left, trying to take others with him, that gave him such a bad name.

They were fed up. Teddy has always said he wanted to play finals footy. He wanted to be at a winning club had nothing to do with Woods. The club was a shambles - that's why they left.

Those 4 should of had us playing finals footy.

Yeah true and he is the only one who actually received any karma for his actions! All the other knobs that screwed us have gone onto much bigger and better things, even that flog Aloiai is reaping rewards playing in a better side than ours ?

Well not playing currently - he's out for 3 months with a wrist injury.

So sharks get hynes and good chance of finucane, dogs get ado Carr and Burton and we're looking at Dwz. ?
We must be the basket case of basket cases

Canterbury have tried to buy a team and are finding out the hard way that that's not how it works. We learnt that lesson a few years ago with Cleary. Addo-Carr and Burton are fine acquisitions but I much prefer the way we are going about recruitment.

Just because Ivan made some poor recruitment decisions doesn't mean you shouldn't target excellent, established players. Burton and Addo-Carr are excellent signings. They're getting rid of Dallin because they have signed players who are an upgrade on him. The fact Dallin would walk right into our team is an indictment of our backline recruitment.

Spot on.
Josh and Burton are great buys and would walk into our team. So would hynes.
We should be after finucane big time and if we miss out, questions should be asked. Especially if we are looking at dwz

We have been missing out for a couple of years now I have asked the question many times still no answer

I know, it is depressing, IMHO Madge is far from an attraction, in fact I have seen stories on coaches players least like to play under, Madge features highly, also heard some players say it on FOX

I've heard a lot of players say the exact opposite.

Where are they then Russ, where are these good players you speak of, where are the players Madge reckons keep ringing him.
I will tell you where they are, at another club after using us to jack up there price, Madge is no good player magnet

Didn't say where they were from, did I?

However, since you asked.

AD, Laurie, Liddle, Joffa, Lucy, Brooks, Talau, Seyfarth, Tamou etc. have all said they enjoyed playing for the Tigers and under Madge.

Players at other clubs wouldn't know if they haven't played under him. If they have they were probably whaite Anters from Souffs or people with an axe to grind.

I know you don't want him as coach so I'll forgive you for clutching at straws 851.

Stand for something. Be better.

Lol we just signed Nofo for 4 years and are looking to sign DWZ and apparently Sam Burgess. How’s that building for the future exactly? I’d suggest the ones letting the Wests Tigers down are the ones making those stupid decisions.

Wanting something different to me doesn’t make you more of a fan than me.

That's your argument, 1 re-signing of a long-term Tiger and 2 very shallow rumours?

Woods was poorly advised in hindsight he would have been a better keep than Signing Packer

Definitely. I would definitely have preferred Woodsy to have stayed. And definitely wish Packer never came to our club. And yes, Isaac and Ivan are both to blame, both are blacklisted in my book.

Others here have mentioned the game may have passed Woodsy by, and that he may block some of our junior forwards - both very good points. Maybe we asked too much of him at the time with the leadership role, maybe it was too early.

For mine, if Woodsy came out and publicly said that he wished he had never left WT, and that he was coming back on a modest contract for 1 or 2 years, to fill a leadership role (he's of that age where it really should be part of his resume now) to help mentor our young cub pack AND if Madge and Hartigan were convinced it was good for us now, then I would be swayed.

I would never forget, and maybe only partially forgive, but I could move past it if the club thought it was in our best interest.

IMO we cant carry Tamou AND Woods

Nice story but Woods left before we signed Packer.

Woods signed with Bulldogs 30/Apr/17. Packer signed with Tigers 16/May/17.

It is possible that Packer was confirmed earlier and Woods knew it, but it actually makes more sense that a replacement prop was signed only after another prop left.

In other words, the signings that were made by Cleary were a response to and result of Moses / Tedesco / Woods leaving. That freed up the funds for Cleary to make his signings.

I'd suggest the ones letting the Wests Tigers down are the fans still holding a flame for guys like Woods.

Stand for something. Be better.

Brain aids!

Absolutely. The re-signing of Nofoaluma is indefensible. The fact he’s a long term Tiger is inconsequential. As for the DWZ one, the Pom said he’d probably be here by the Eels game. So unless you have information better than the Pom I don’t think I’d call it ‘very shallow’.

Do we really want or need woods? I’d put Stefano in the starting line up before him Any day

Catching up.
Rumour?
Suggestion?
Or just a chin wag on the forum?

Talking about a potential signing that has been suggested?

No really. Someone said Woods was going to be off contract, or let go or something. It started from there.

There was a post about apparently we're still talking to DWZ.

Packer and mats signed after woods rejected our offer. Am I mistaken?

EDIT: Snipped an incorrect brain fart

Yes you are mistaken. Packer signed May 2017, Woods signed June 2018

Woods signed on the 30th of April, 2017

Oh The Pom said it, well, never been wrong ever before, ever.

It seems as though the forum is split pretty evenly on the DWZ possibility, I would like the tigers to persist with roberts on the wing and see how it plans out. He has the speed to play on the wing, I get that under the high ball will be the test but it’s one I’d be willing to give a few weeks. I’d also prefer to give Fitzgibbon a run and see how he went. DWZ was a quality player and I’ve no real doubt he could get back to that and if we signed him I wouldn’t be upset I just wouldn’t have him in the FG team until atleast roberts had a few weeks. Just my opinion (if it’s even a real thing or just a rumour)
