Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

The injury/age stuff is obviously a concern, but I think it'd be a decent punt if they are happy enough with the medical side of things.
He was definitely disappointing, but that's by his own high standards. He was probably the top hooker in the comp for a year or two, and one of the best players anywhere at his best.
We don't need him to be 2019 Hodgson - we aren't making a run next year. If he can come and play at slightly above replacement value and get Simpkin ready then all good.

I have zero confidence in Liddle, so we need someone to come in and tie us over until Simpkin is ready.

Him making Simpkin is a myth. No one made Farah or Cam Smith. If Simpkin needs a mentor, he’s in trouble.

Steve Walters was brought in to mentor Danny Buderus.

Cameron Smith got to do the same for Harry and Brandon.

This is not uncommon within the game.
Ability will get you so far, coaching and mentorship is what unlocks the ability.

Tough one, Liddle is definitely a question, but I'm not sure if Hodgson at 32 is an answer.
Liddle really needs to work on his kicking game and his general conditioning before he can be relied upon.

Liddle is meh. Simpkin isnt ready. Can see why they'd go for Hodgson.

Agree.. people also need to remember there has been really No reserve grade for like 2 years and that is a massive delay in development.. If its for 2 years for Hodgson I have no problems and would help with Hastings and Gildart joining also.

This Hodgson news has certainly created some robust discussion. To stand back and look at the possibility, I can see the positives and the negatives.

Firstly, Liddle does not support the coach, his passing from dummy half was poor, and he can only set up a try if he makes a break through the ruck. He and Simpkin have also been found wanting in defence.

Hodgson was a grand final hooker a couple of years ago. He didnt have a great 2021, but was coming off a significant injury and had to watch whilst the Raiders tarnished the name of his good mate. I feel that takes a toll.

We need a couple of players with grunt that want to win and I feel he falls into this category. Injury is a risk, but it was a risk for Benji at 20 years and Teddy at 22 years. If we play him right, we can minimise his injury potential like the Storm did with Smith.

If true then I don't mind the signing. Every signing has risk but I feel if Liddle is not the long term answer then he should leave now. With respect to the criticism around the fact we only just resigned him, you cannot get rid of him without a plan B and our squad lacked plans C, D and F too.

We need a couple of more mature players that can handle the heat before our crop of juniors come through. We have to take risks, but every signing is a risk. I can handle Hodgson and Peachey providing the next signing is around the 26-28 year old mark.

I think Simpkin is the answer but as he's not quite there yet I have no problem with Hodgson. I was disappointed by Liddle this year, he was great in short bursts with Harry Grant the year before, but he can't seem to handle 80 minutes.

It’s no surprise all the usual culprits are bagging the Hodgson signing. We have no leaders, simple as that. Liddle is bog average and has clearly been told he’s not apart of this clubs long term ambitions, further emphasised by Simpkins long term contract. Hodgson for 2 years is the ideal mentor for Simpkin and at no real damage to the salary cap.

I am happy to be lumped with the "usual suspects" if it means thinking signing a 32 year old, hot off the worst season he has had in the NRL is a bad idea.

I thought as a supporter base, we were tired of signing all these over the 30 year olds. Yet the majority seemed enthusiastic about Peachy, and now there’s excitement about possibly signing Hodgson. In a position we have covered btw.

So many here complaining we haven't got any leadership, we lack experience and when a player with 270 games experience and a current test player for his nation is mentioned they crap the bed and say he's too old.

How old was Cam Smith when he retired?

How many knee reconstructions did he have?

To me that is the key issue,he is over 30 with 2 knee reconstructions so the outlook is bleak imo.Leadership would be fine but it is needed on the field not watching the game

Go and read the comments of his season. All agree he had a poor season. Most alarming for me (particularly with some many here screaming about LEADERSHIP), Hodgson sacked himself from the captaincy after having a spit and all the fan comments below his review mention "where his head is at".

Nothing about him in 2021 or 2022 says anything that we need. 3 years ago, perfect but not now.

There's a lot of positivity in those posts.
Saying he had an off gear pretty much.

Some rating his season a 6 which is a pass.
Also he wasn't the only issue at the Raiders this year.
They were very poor as a team, as a whole.

If all of that was the case and he was 26, I'd call it just a bad year and get him over here. He had a bad year, he is 32 and only 12months out from his second reconstruction. Physically and football wise, there is nothing going for him.

As a leader....he had a sook when Sticky dropped him to the bench and quit as Captain and supposedly has a problem with Sticky now which is why there are rumours of him leaving with a year on his Contract. Leadership wise, there is nothing going for him.

All that aside though....

They still featured higher on the ladder than we did...

With their old broken hooker and... their halfback who's no where near as good as ours.

Thoughts?

CNK, Wighton, Croker, Rapana, Kris, Valemei, CHN, Lui, Whitehead, Young, Tapine, Papalii are all better than our equivalent. They are a mile better team than us and IMO Sticky is the most underrated coach in the comp.

CNK and Croker were injured a lot of the year.
Valemei is a reserve grader.

A mile better team...
They made the finals two years in a row and were very close this year also.

Their captain was Josh Hodgson throughout the success... albeit this year was a troubled one where they narrowly missed the 8 and he stood down.

There's the leadership we've been lacking for so long.
Not Tamou.

There is no question that Hodgson was a great player and in his pomp he is exactly the player we need. He is no longer that player and age and injuries will guarantee that he doesnt magically return to that player.

For those suggesting that despite him being old and broken we get him here for *leadership*, his recent sulking for being benched, quitting as Captain, doesnt scream leadership to me. Again he was selected as Captain for a reason and he may have once been perfect. Those days are gone.

I hear what you're saying...

So
2020 Hodgson, Good.
2021 Hodgson, Bad.

Not what Im saying, I'm saying its worse than that.

2018 hodgson - Very bad - missed 14 games due to **first** ACL
2019 Hodgson - Exceptional - Played 24 games, helped get them to GF. **THIS** is the player we need. He was 29.
2020 Hodgson, Disaster - Misses 16 games due to his **second** ACL.
2021 Hodgson, Bad.

IMO it doesnt take a genius to work out the trajectory of the rest of his career from this point on as a 32yo with two bad rebuilt knees.

For those that are saying that they think that as a 32yo he will miraculously rediscover the form of 3 years ago, before his second reco ill add................Luke Brooks was Halfback of the year 2018 and he is 26yo.

Not sure why the Broncos haven’t made a play for Hodgson. They’re still lacking in the spine, despite Reynolds.

Jacob Liddle will be available soon enough....

In 2 years

We'll see... ?

This fish isn’t jumping in the boat

I will bookmark this post for when the news breaks.

A lot going behind the scenes by the sounds of it.

- a friend of Jacobs family posts he isn't in the clubs plans.
- word we are now close to announcing Josh Hodgson.

Isn't hard to figure out what's going on here....

Funny that they re-signed him for 2 years then.

Didn't Lodge extend with the Broncos before leaving them for the Warriors?

Anyway, watch this space.
There's some movement anticipated.

Bit different Demps - Lodge already had the options in his contract (Money was already on the table for him - So he took it)
then left...

Other factors at play...

In your thread you posted, they mentioned he played a lot of this year at 6 and 13.

No one can predict the future.

I think he could be used as a starting 9, moving to 13, allowing Simpkin to come on and play.
Good for his development.

Most players can use mentorship... I'm sure even the best hooker of all time, just didn't become that on his ability alone.

Same source for the info? Or from independent sources?

Liddle is a very good player. He may or may not be 'off' Maguire but that is irrelevant with the bigger picture. The Board appointing Sheens as coaching director and two new assistants appointed directly sends a pretty clear message that the Board is not exactly 'on' Maguire.
