Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Hodgson would be our kind of signing. A signing that would have been great 5 years ago. I’m sure we’ll bring Teddy home when he’s 34.

At 34 he would still be too good to come back here.

Go and read the comments of his season. All agree he had a poor season. Most alarming for me (particularly with some many here screaming about LEADERSHIP), Hodgson sacked himself from the captaincy after having a spit and all the fan comments below his review mention "where his head is at".

Nothing about him in 2021 or 2022 says anything that we need. 3 years ago, perfect but not now.

There's a lot of positivity in those posts.
Saying he had an off gear pretty much.

Some rating his season a 6 which is a pass.
Also he wasn't the only issue at the Raiders this year.
They were very poor as a team, as a whole.

If all of that was the case and he was 26, I'd call it just a bad year and get him over here. He had a bad year, he is 32 and only 12months out from his second reconstruction. Physically and football wise, there is nothing going for him.

As a leader....he had a sook when Sticky dropped him to the bench and quit as Captain and supposedly has a problem with Sticky now which is why there are rumours of him leaving with a year on his Contract. Leadership wise, there is nothing going for him.

All that aside though....

They still featured higher on the ladder than we did...

With their old broken hooker and... their halfback who's no where near as good as ours.

Thoughts?

CNK, Wighton, Croker, Rapana, Kris, Valemei, CHN, Lui, Whitehead, Young, Tapine, Papalii are all better than our equivalent. They are a mile better team than us and IMO Sticky is the most underrated coach in the comp.

CNK and Croker were injured a lot of the year.
Valemei is a reserve grader.

A mile better team...
They made the finals two years in a row and were very close this year also.

Their captain was Josh Hodgson throughout the success... albeit this year was a troubled one where they narrowly missed the 8 and he stood down.

There's the leadership we've been lacking for so long.
Not Tamou.

There is no question that Hodgson was a great player and in his pomp he is exactly the player we need. He is no longer that player and age and injuries will guarantee that he doesnt magically return to that player.

For those suggesting that despite him being old and broken we get him here for *leadership*, his recent sulking for being benched, quitting as Captain, doesnt scream leadership to me. Again he was selected as Captain for a reason and he may have once been perfect. Those days are gone.

I hear what you're saying...

So
2020 Hodgson, Good.
2021 Hodgson, Bad.

Not what Im saying, I'm saying its worse than that.

2018 hodgson - Very bad - missed 14 games due to **first** ACL
2019 Hodgson - Exceptional - Played 24 games, helped get them to GF. **THIS** is the player we need. He was 29.
2020 Hodgson, Disaster - Misses 16 games due to his **second** ACL.
2021 Hodgson, Bad.

IMO it doesnt take a genius to work out the trajectory of the rest of his career from this point on as a 32yo with two bad rebuilt knees.

For those that are saying that they think that as a 32yo he will miraculously rediscover the form of 3 years ago, before his second reco ill add................Luke Brooks was Halfback of the year 2018 and he is 26yo.

Other factors at play...

In your thread you posted, they mentioned he played a lot of this year at 6 and 13.

No one can predict the future.

I think he could be used as a starting 9, moving to 13, allowing Simpkin to come on and play.
Good for his development.

Oh my god......that is EXACTLY what we need, another non-Lock to play at 13. So far we have Alex Twal, Joe O, Jackson Hastings, Tyrone Peachey, Luke Brooks and now Hodgson to play 13.

We love a bit of utility dont we. If we are buying a hooker it has to be a 80min hooker, otherwise we can get the same service out of Liddle/utility of choice.

@pawsandclaws1 said in [Signing Suggestions & Rumours](/post/1491100) said:
Liddle is a very good player. He may or may not be 'off' Maguire but that is irrelevant with the bigger picture. The Board appointing Sheens as coaching director and two new assistants appointed directly sends a pretty clear message that the Board is not exactly 'on' Maguire.

And Signing Hodgson sends a message to the "senior players"

Anything can be painted to suit whatever argument.

You've made valid points and I agree with you..

However, it isn't up to us and if the club chooses to sign Hodgson (which I believe they want to do this) then that's their call and us forumers can do nothing but discuss it.

Anyway, no need to shoot the messenger.

I totally agree, I was just responding to Demps post. IMO it is ridiculous to consider buying Hodgson to use at 13.

IMO it is ridiculous to consider buying Hodgson at all but I dont think Im covering any new ground, others see him as a great purchase. Personally I never thought I'd see the day that after 10years of missing the semi, in the middle of yet another rebuild, after bitching about signing old injured players, that there would be a sizable core of fans here celebrating the possibility of buying an old out of form player with two bad rebuilt knees.

At least this Hodgson debate is in the right thread for a change.Until it’s announced officially by the club not worth getting excited or worked up about

Yeah all good. As I said above, I dont think Im covering any new ground hereSurprised how many think that signing an old injured out of form player will be a positive.

If we sign him, Ill shake my head in bewilderment then cheer him when he runs on and hope he proves me wrong.

Some good news

TMM is looking at making a league comeback with the donkeys

Reallt liked him as a player, was quite terrible the way he had to retire, hopefully he is able to return and kill it

great news. such a good bloke, exceptionally talented as well. wish we held onto him as opposed to MM.

Not sure Trent Merrin would describe him as a good bloke!!

wasn't that Moylan?

Not so sure, was shipped up to North Queensland pretty quickly after.

As was Moylan (to Cronulla). After TMM left, Gould very publicly stated how good a bloke TMM was and addressed rumours about him. Gould made it pretty clear it wasnt TMM.

Maybe it was Gus.

If it was, I'd salute and buy him a beer.

Liddle is a very good player. He may or may not be 'off' Maguire but that is irrelevant with the bigger picture. The Board appointing Sheens as coaching director and two new assistants appointed directly sends a pretty clear message that the Board is not exactly 'on' Maguire.

Liddle is very poor
Gets gassed after 20 mins
Passes onto the deck
Can’t get to dummy half in time
Even Hodgson on one leg is a massive upgrade

You could tell by round 25 Blore and co had had enough of that crap!!

One thing about Blore is that he either runs terrible lines or mistimes his runs terribly. Blore needs to work on his game.

Don’t get the down votes. All players have weaknesses. You outlined Blores. I think he’s a weapon and I enjoy watching him overall.

Anyone seen Russell?

Could you imagine at the start of the season that the majority of fans here want Liddle pushed on for a 32yo with bad knees?

Maybe sheens doesn't rate Liddle 🤔

Anyone making the argument that Hodgo isn't worth the risk due to his past injury issues need not look any further than the man he'll likely replace. How many serious, season ending injuries has Liddle had in his relatively short career to date? Dodgy shoulders and coming off an ACL a season ago, I'd argue the risk of injury is much the same with either.

Massive difference in having an ACL reconstruction at 20 compared to 30.

And Hodgson has always had the benefit of playing behind a very big and very good Raiders' pack. That is not the case at WTs.

He's had like 2 or 3 shoulder reconstructions too though.

ACL's are a different injury. IMO low percentage come back the same player. Two ACL's is bad. You dont completely recover from a knee reco at 30 IMO.

To take your own point a step further, the player you are referring to with two shoulder recon and one knee recon is the same player most here are looking to push out.

I’ll argue a different point I understand the knee injuries aren’t great but when has been off recovering from these injury’s his body’s hasn’t been taking any damage there for he will be a able to play for a few extra years
