Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Wish we could do signings roosters style. Couple of weeks ago there was noise momorovski was going to roosters. Two weeks later it’s done. No fuss. We go back and forth all off season and end up with precious little. Frustrating

I think the Momo to Roosters situation is a little different. I’d say he was chafing at the bit to go back there at any deal so it would have been a pretty easy signing for the Roosters.
Granted though - when the Roosters want somebody they usually get their man. Obviously they are a desirable destination for many reasons that we simply can’t compete with at the moment.

I wonder if the board still needs to sign off every new player/ contract or whether Sheens has full autonomy here. If the latter, expect much faster movement on the signing front.

It will still be slow while Sheens is on another time zone to everyone else.

Isaiah Papali'i is a terrific player, he is definitely worth $600k. Massive motor, great passing game, defence and can play on an edge or on the middle. Hopefully we make an offer and be actually thinks about it

Luciano won't get $700k from anyone. Let him go to the open market and he will come crawling back asking for a reduced deal

Hopefully the Hodgson deal gets done. He and Raiders obviously don't get on and he'll be leaving so we can afford to hold out and play hardball with them

I agree with most of that but i honestly do not see Hodgson as an astute buy, just the sort of buy we have made so many times over the years and it never works

On Papalii - smells awfully like another media driven story that will end the same way as all the others with the club being a basketcase unable to attract quality players.

Is it possible that the Chooks top brass have earned respect from Journos? Does our approach need some polish? We certainly seemed to have trodden on a few toes, run over a few cats, maybe? IDK, but I do know our relationship with the media could be better. Or is it as simple as us being fodder? Your Momirovski is a great example of our off field administrative / management style. It takes the wind out of our sales.

There's definitely risk involved in signing him but at least he's shown he can still play good footy and he likes to take control on the field

Why stop at Papali'i? Let's add Reed Mahoney and Junior Paulo.

A good old fashioned raid on a rival club, quick turnaround of fortunes!

Papali’i is perfect because he can play both

Yes Yes yes

How on earth can we have 3 spots left.

Scary considering we lack in so many positions... need a backup fullback, another centre, backup winger, backup prop, second rower...

You know you don’t need backups if your starters are fit and playing consistent footy. Let’s just get a really strong starting squad before we get too stressed about next man up. That’s what development is for IMO.

Good clubs have depth in every position - of course you need good starters but you're going to get injuries every season. When roosters or Storm get injuries they have blokes who can come in and do a good job. We have rookies who aren't ready and journeyman

With no backup fullback we will have to play someone out of position too

The successful team back up players are usually their younger players who have developed through the systems and across their systems and structures. The top teams manage their cap with Guns and Rookies. The mediocre teams (us/Dragons) fill their team with mid rangers.

I'm not advocating to have a full 30 of just okay players but when you literally don't have a backup fullback that's an issue.

Yeah, ok. I haven't watched him that closely but he seemed pretty good in the games I saw?

What I'm really getting at though, is such a raid against Parra is equal to a 6 player turnaround in quality - we go 3 up, they go 3 down...

I like the idea. It worked for the Eels years ago when they poached Dymock, Smith, McCracken and Pay from the Dogs.

I think the media attention is more to do with our popularity. Tigers stories draw attention as does negative press. We are an immediate draw card because of late we offer both

Mahoney was excellent this season, great defender, great service and showed a good kicking game too.

Parra would have won the prelim if he was there. He’s a really good player.

Eels finished 11th or worse the 4 seasons prior to signing the big 4. After the signings they finished in the top 4 for the next 5 seasons straight culminating in a minor premiership and grand final. I would classify that as a successful recruitment campaign and would take that any day of the week over finishing 11th or worse.
