Bloke I work with and his mate were out on weekend and happened to bump into Paulo. Paulo knew said blokes mate through sports media circles and the trio began discussing things league in general. Bloke from work also a massive Tigers fan began sussing him out etc. Asked if he looked like signing with the Dolphins or did he have other offers/interest in mind.

Paulo mentioned unlikely he'll be at Eels due to current offer well below others currently available though said money isn't his only motivating factor. Said length of deal is one factor to consider given his age. Mentioned preference is to remain in Sydney though the Dolphins would naturally appeal to anyone given it's a start up. Asked would he ever consider Tigers as an option and he openly said sure why not? Said team is making some solid signings and putting together a pretty decent forward pack.

Take this info as you will as it's not first hand though the lad who gave me the info is a pretty straight down the line type.

Sounds like a done deal.

Sounds like he was hedging his bets every way possible though not often we have room and money for a player of his standard and them speak highly of the club. To even have a sniff Tigers would prob need cough up about 750k (bit more than Eels current offer but little less than the apparent Dolphins amount talked about). To me that's prob overs but naturally Tigers generally need to pay a little more than market value.

We were willing to pay Thompson 800

Sounds like the length of the deal will be the sweetener , match or just better the money offered and give him a extra year and it can be done

Wouldn't Paulo cost 800k to sign?

For us to have a legitimate chance yes it would cost us about that much

Not necessarily. He is currently on approx. $600K and Parra have locked away Reagan Campbell-Gillard $750 per year until 2025.
We could get Paulo for $650- $700k.

If it was 650-700k them I'm al for it. He and API gives us cred in the eyes of other players. Have them two and we will start to get better recruits.

Having a great forward pack though doesn't help if we have Brooks running the show. Don't mind him at 5/8th but we need an out and out halfback.

I'd like to see what he's like with a 'real' pack. He's never really had one.

True. But pack or not doesn't make a difference when you kick a grubbers from 10m out and it goes dead by ten metres haha.

See what he and Madge can do this year then I will re evaluate things.

Stop, I beg you. No more Brooks talk, please.

Not about what he'd be like w a forward pack

Or if this is finally the year.

Please, stop. No one has ever been persuaded by a single Brooks argument on here.

That cuts both ways 🙂

I'm aware ?

As i have always said,-- A half is the link between the forwards and backs. We have had weak attack and defence in the forwards, and slow and inafactive backs. To pinpoint Brooks as our problem was rediculous. AD tried hard but a little overrated, i doubt he will be in the halve unless of injury.

Ok so what about his short range kicks and building pressure when we're in the opposition teams 20metee zone? He can't even grubber a ball..always goes out. Packs don't make him kick better lol

Absolutely, we have no issue getting into the 20, finishing is the problem!

True. Last year we scored enough points to win lots of matches, only problem is our defence. Our defence lost so many games. That’s the difference between us and a top 6 team. Fix that and see how we travel. Don’t fix it then bottom 3 team. Can’t be that hard…. Or can it?

Redcliffe in the mix 4 Farnworth.suggested their willing 2 offer upto 500k.we'd need an extra 100k,to get him out of QLD?

not worth that sort of coin 550k or 600k would have been better getting Cotric

Why? Farnworth is a better centre option than Cotric.

And he is a good goal kicker.

No we weren't, or else the deal would be done by now

Junior Paulo is an elite prop. Happy to give him a 3-4 year deal, nothing wrong with a prop at 32 years old, especially as one as good as him.

We weren't willing to pay full freight for Thompson? I thought this was common knowledge as to why the deal broke down
