Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Jeez he's 20 years old and had 14 games. He's looked ok actually.

I feel people here interpret being a 'development club' as us almost fully loaded with gun local kids that get off to perfect starts that we then keep every single one for their whole careers. Like we were supposed to just plonk all those SG ball Magpies in our starting side and off we go. Anything less and the idea is debunked.

We should be getting good value and depth from our juniors, not just instant match winning talent. You need to be getting your Beau Ryans and Dean Collises as much as your Chris Lawrences. Tim Moltzen wasn't a sure thing the minute he came on the scene. It was a good few seasons before he eventually got the starting fullback spot. (from Wade Mckinnon - jeez). Maybe Heath is more the in the Shannon Gallant isle but even that quality of player can play its role, and in any case it's way to early to tell.

But you need to invest those 30-40 games over a few seasons.
The poor old heath reference is more about him being rushed into first grade, moved around spine positions, missing a whole bunch of tackles and clearly finishing the season with no confidence.

There is a good footballer there but he was done a massive disservice last year. I hope he can get his confidence back

I think we're very likely to improve our footy for the reasons you mentioned. But I'm not convinced that improves results as I see potentially bigger improvements in those around us.
I'd say there is genuine reasons for all the lower ranked teams to improve. Some will improve a little, some will improve a lot (we could be either). That difference will be reflected on the ladder.
It's all about consistency in the halves. I'm not sure how many times we started with the same two halves last year but it wasn't many. If Luai and Latu can string games together and the rest of the team can run off that, we're a massive chance. Decent pack and a hot backline with plenty of competition for spots.
Knights and Titans need time, Saints need halves, Parra and Dogs will stagnate/go backwards, Cowboys always let themselves down. Manly are dead set gooone.
Caveat: We may be a middle short...
I'm confident of a top 8 spot.

Hey guys been a while hope everyone’s been well. Just wondering if anyone was able to attend today’s Members forum & was able to give a summary of what was said or if there’s anything of note we need to know?

Not sure how updated you've been but they did a bootcamp over the weekend and were back at training Monday.

I know this doesn't answer your question.

I both agree and disagree with your assessments.I'm confident we will be out of genuine top 8 contention (still a mathematical chance) by Origin.
I just don't think our forwards will win the battle often enough to give the halves enough chances. IF Pole becomes the player he has threatened to become, the Fainus take a big step forward and one of Hunt, Afoa or Seyfarth can find their best footy week to week then maybe they can. Just to many IFs in my opinion. I have some question marks over some of the backs as well but more concerned about the forwards.
Manly look very much like we do in my opinion. They need some young forwards to step up but I rate their backline far superior to ours. Unlike us however they have a genuine, if injury prone, star player. That's probably how I would assess the Knights as well. They need their pack to play above themselves more than simply needing time.
Agree Saints need halves but I rate their pack, though potentially a year to soon for them to really match the better packs. They have a bit of defensive grit which alongside their forwards will keep them in contests.
Cowboys do have a habit of letting themselves down but they've enough talent to challenge the top 4. They won't, but the talent is there.
Titans a bit like Cowboys. More than enough talent to challenge the 8 but shoot themselves in the foot with defensive lapses. One strong off season teaching some actual defensive patterns is all they need to be looking better than what we served up last year. Sure we should also be better than last year also but we haven't proven it yet.

We could finish well clear of them and it wouldn't shock me. We could also finish well below them and it would equally not shock me. The problem is there are another 10 teams that I can't see us competing with.

I don't see any reason for Eels or Dogs to regress. Dogs probably a little on the ladder but not so much in performance.

As much as I hate Parra, how is the NRL threatening to step in and allow the Storm to get their way? God I hate PVL.
I can't believe this but I agree with you G, after all the tough talk from PVL to rub out the defectors then to roll over on it just stinks, he should have received a year ban.

And to help the Storm to get stronger just makes it worse, so much for trying to keep a level competition.

Still have no idea if he's done something about or situation, it just pisses me off more.

LOL whatever

Yeah, He's that guy...

But he's also the Guy that signed 'long term' to play Fullback for a certain coach, Then his club sacked the coach - He never played Fullback, Then they got another Coach who plays him on the Wing, where (Rightly or Wrongly) he's said he doesn't want to play...

So then he's coaxed to Parra on the promise of playing his preferred position of Centre,
And before he gets there - They've speared the Coach he came to play for and the Captain he wanted
to Play with
- And Again, he doesn't get to play his preferred position.

I get that he plays well on the Wing, and he should do what's best for the team
- But it is his life / career.
If he doesn't want to play there, He does have a choice.

Understanding it could be seen as somewhat different,
But how many of us are forced to do a job everyday that we didn't apply to do,
And have no interest in doing?

It sucks (For Parra) But they've had this coming for some time.
He is employed to play rugby league, to what position the coach wants him to play.... If he doesn't play to his best because he isn't in his preferred spot, then that's on the coach...
