The NRL is on the verge of appointing Nine newspaper journalist Michael Chammas as their general manager of football at the PNG Chiefs.
This masthead understands that Chammas has been earmarked to take charge of the Chiefs’ football operations after being hand-picked by ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys to become a key player at the fledgling franchise.

The Chiefs, who recently announced that former Digicel PNG boss Lorna McPherson would be their chief executive, are due to enter the NRL in 2028.

The head of football role will be one of the most significant appointments given the team is starting from scratch. However, Chammas will take charge of PNG’s football operations armed with one of the most extensive contact books in the game.

The news breaker has reported on some of the biggest stories in rugby league over the past decade, earning a growing reputation as a media heavy hitter through his work with the Sydney Morning Herald, Nine News and 100% Footy.

He now faces an even more significant challenge in ensuring the Chiefs hit the ground running as they prepare to enter the NRL in 2028.

The Chiefs are yet to sign a player or coach, but they will head to market armed with tax-free dollars after the NRL struck an historic agreement with the federal government allowing for players to effectively double their income.

Players aside, the most significant appointment for the chiefs will be their inaugural head coach. That decision will be made by the AFL Commission as they wade through a list of candidates that include the likes of Arthur and Jason Demetriou.

Seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett has also been mooted as a prospective PNG coach, although the dream target would undoubtedly be Penrith mentor Ivan Cleary.

It is believed Panthers half Nathan Cleary is also on PNG’s wish-list as they look to make a big splash in the player market.

The Chiefs have had a rocky start to their existence.

Chief executive Andrew Hill quit to take over the role of Panthers Group CEO, while influential board member Wapu Sonk stood down amid corruption allegations, which he vehemently denies.

Last month, inaugural chair Ray Dib revealed he was forced out of his role with the 19th expansion side following an uneasy relationship with NRL powerbrokers.

Last year, it is understood Chammas was locked in talks over joining Perth as head of football when it looked like former Parramatta coach Brad Arthur would be appointed coach.

When Arthur was overlooked, the move went cold.

However, it is understood NRL powerbrokers have been intent on bringing Chammas into the tent to play a role in the game’s future.

Chammas would be the second media personality to take on a role with an expansion side after the NRL appointed former Channel 7 boss Anthony De Ceglie chief executive of the Perth Bears.

In May last year, Chammas was involved in a fiery exchange with Canterbury general manager of football, Phil Gould, over the Bulldogs’ signing of former Wests Tigers prodigy Lachlan Galvin.

Now, the Nine stablemates could come head to head as opposing football department bosses.

That’s literally what the club has been doing for years , and it’s the reason we have been shit… no experience , promise in juniors … unable to make the leap when leaned on . For me it’s best player available who’s willing to play that role re. Spend the year mostly at lidcombe oval, come up and do a job if and when required. Honestly your Tristan hope and Murray types. Good attitude , great trainers , great club men . They’re everywhere in q cup.

Just when you thought the NRL could not get any worse

Agree, promoting young blokes before their time hasn’t worked for us in past years. Although, the identification and environment hasn’t helped.

Not only do we really need an NRL quality middle with a point of difference such as Ray Stone with high leg speed and aggression, but assuming Royce and Bunty are regulars on our NRL bench we also lack an experienced middle to help toughen up our very young and inexperienced NSW Cup team.
I don’t think we are learning our lessons in a hurry as it will be like lambs to the slaughter if we have such a young and inexperienced NSW Cup team week after week.
I think we should have signed someone like Liam Knight to fill this role knowing he not long ago openly stated he ideally wants to remain in Sydney as opposed to returning to his UK Super League contract.
As for the backs anyone who has him on Instagram would know Harley Smith-Shields is elite fit and strong and being still quite young with NRL experience, surely he would add a bit of experience and depth to our squad.

We had Ray Stone

Sentenced for 8 years ..first parole 10/26
He can maybe do some day release work with us this season(if were interested).but not available until 2027
And rightly so
And if we weren't interested wed be foolish..because others will be
I thought i read somewhere he cant actually play till 2030 and couldn't play on parole? Could he wrong

How do you work that out ?
Assuming we stick with May and Pole as our starting props and Twal as our starting 13, our 6 man NRL bench would likely be;
14. Latu Fainu
15. Alex Seyfarth
16. Sione Fainu
17. Royce Hunt
18. Bunty Afoa
19. Heamasi Makasini

It’s not even certain the 2 that miss out will be able to play NSW Cup on that same weekend and even if they can it’s highly likely there is at least one forward injured most weeks which would mean the players named above will be unlikely to play much if any NSW Cup in 2026.
IF and at this stage it’s a big IF we signed someone such as Ray Stone either before the season kicks off or sometime early in the season, that would help our depth, but aside from these middles we only really have Kit Laulilli pushing for NRL, so there is no doubt we are very light on middle forward depth which could become a big problem if we get a few injuries.

B&G suggested adding a small middle like Stone to the roster and you said we also need another experienced one. So add 2 more to what you just wrote and its complete imbalance to the 30 man roster. You just named what we currently have, not your suggestion of adding 2 more

I doubt he’s allowed to work with his brothers, we employed a few a while back - they did checks on all the existing staff to make sure there was no existing connection.
