You may be surprised what agents try to negotiate into player contracts these days, probably one of the reasons that players are able to wriggle their way out of contracts so often with the assistance of their agents and probably one of the reasons that there is a general consensus these days that contracts are not worth the paper they are written on.

We are very rarely privy to what is actually in a contract and the loop holes that are contained within unless of course it involves a team like the Wests Tigers who happen to be one of the favourite whipping boys of the media who just love to create click bait generally at our expense.

The NRL should have a standard contract with no clauses, but that will never happen as it could be deemed as restraint of trade. The player management run the game now as they control the movement of players and coaches and basically the NRL are powerless to do anything unless it can be proven they have done something illegal.

It also a problem when demand outstrips supply by a large amount. This has been a problem for a long time but throw in two new franchises into the market and we now have a real problem. Agents now can demand anything and have four clubs willing to meet there demands. Unless all clubs band together it’s only going to get worse and of course that will never happen given the predatory nature of the NRL

It's tough.

The more I see all the horse trading that goes on, the more I think the contract length doesn't really matter...if they want to get out, they can get out.

Having a 2 year plus get out clauses doesn't change much, but avoids the inevitable blow up and media circus that comes with it.

If the player is happy, they'll stay. If not, they would have agitated anyway.

The big players have the leverage and the market dictates the terms they can negotiate.

Melbourne, Roosters etc. Are able to keep players even on unders. We can joke about salary cap rorting, but no amount of money would keep you at a club if it wasn't a great place to turn up each day.

These type of contracts have been gaining momentum in the last 5 years or so, if you're an elite player it seems like you can have just about anything written into the contract.

Teams get desperate for a player in demand who can make the difference, especially if you're outside the top 8.

We had a lot of fans whinging when it come out that Stefano Utoikamanu had a contract clause that stated he was a free agent if we did not make the top 8.
In hindsight that was quite reasonable if that’s what it took to potentially keep him and by missing the 8 it was the fault of our own results as to why he become a free agent when he did.
Anyway I don’t think any of us miss Stefano all that much even through he had quite a good season for the Storm in 2025.
Is’s possible this same type of clause will be requested by some of our current players that we are trying to extend or players we will be trying to extend real soon. If that’s what it takes to re-sign some of our most valuable players, I think it would be reasonable to have that type of clause and back ourselves to make the top 8.

There aren't any because it's a rumour made up by Broncos fans who can't fathom that a player as good as Haas would leave them. They want to convince themselves that there must be some hidden demand that the Broncos wouldn't agree to, which is why he left.
 
Gerard Condon from Reading the Play has said its the richest deal in Nrl history making Payne the highest paid player in the Nrl. Its bigger than his Bronco deal apparently Gerard does get some good inside info from time to time.
 
The only clause I go with is Santa.
Seriously, the game is not let be these days. Players have managers who themselves have legal advice to enhance every situation for the player. There's no longer trust or loyalty. And if all else fails, the player pleads " personal reasons" knowing full well that no club will want to retain a player who wants out - and we've experienced that first hand!

Giving up the Brisbane lifestyle, cheaper housing, lower cost of living, post football life in Qld and having to adjust to the Sydney lifestyle must make it one huge offer. Also playing for the Broncos, a club which can always produce or buy another top line player, is a significant advantage. I hope he has thought it through.
