Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Unlikely to find a mid-season transfer but if we targeted NRL-quality centres that aren't being picked as starters and basically gave them a starting spot on the right, there may be a slim chance we get one over the line.

Ie.

SHARKS
Ramien and Iro are their starters which leaves Talakai as back-up or utility. Could be worth a chat.

DOGS
Enari Tuala replaced Xerri earlier in the year. Not sure about his quality tho.

PANTHERS
Alamoti and McLean as first pick leaves Izack Tago as backup. Would be great but i think he's signed a long-term deal.

Any others?

He would never come to us, but Herbie F would transform our backline. Mate I’d throw the kitchen sink at him if there was even half a chance.
Taylan and Maka on one side. Herbie and Turuva on the other with Bula at the back. AD and Luai in the halves. Latu at 14.

How good!!
Xmas is still 7 months away lol 🤔

I
Softly, softly....

But seriously, I'd take him on Herbert-level dollars.

Herbert is not the worst for a depth player on minimum… sure …you probably don’t want him as your first drop center like he is with us now .

Junior played ok his first year with us …has good size and quicker than some ..suffered the all too common affliction that a lot of our wingers have .., terrible under the high ball and then morphed into AJ Kepoa levels of dropped ball even when it was passed to him … left us a couple of years ago and hasn’t been sighted off Nobbys at two other teams now so I’m assuming he hasn’t improved

Possible. I don't like our chances of dragging a Xerri over this late in scheme of things.

I'd prioritise Tyrone May

Salary cap is a big consideration. In Benji's long-term planning, no doubt Taylan & Makasini would be pencilled in as our 1st choice centres plus we have To'a on our books. You can't have too high a weighting on centres in your top 30.

For 2027, someone like Enari Tuala could fit the profile at around $250k. Decent size, reliable defender, reasonably quick, centre & winger, experienced plus reportedly highly respected amongst his team mates & coaches for his effort areas and work ethic (big tick for Benji). Jesse Arthurs may be another if we could land him at good $$$ deal for us. Isaiah Tass although contracted at Rabbits could be another if he is surplus but can't see him leaving his bros.

What’s flippers up to?
Knights I believe.

Weird thing with AJ- I'd take him back on the right size deal too.

The issue with those guys was what their role was back in the day.

As a club's #28-#30 player on the roster, accordingly paid, they are not bad depth.

Just shows how far we have come already as a club.

#28-30 players on the roster should be young players on the way up…not down… they will be paid the minimum regardless

Cant agree mate. You legit should be playing with 1 or two at most 3 of those guys not 5-7. You can look after the deficencies of a couple.
Calling our recruitment bad is next level imo. our top 20 showed they could swing with the big boys, and we now know which ones are struggling under that. Every team that's had our number of key injuries is struggling. Hell, even the storm is struggling, and they have really only had solid first graders injured not their key 5.
If you can't win a game once you have 3 injured players you will never make the finals.

Other clubs have better depth players than us. Brisbane were without a million players and still beat us.

Are you seriously arguing that we have great quality depth?

Why does everyone think we’re in the market for a centre. Last year Souths squad got torn to shreds with injuries. This year, Parra’s has. Neither made any mid year signings. Why does one injury mean we will? Especially when we have a ton of outside backs waiting in the wings?

We don't have any decent outside backs waiting in the wings. What are you on about.
We have James Lanyon who's still at school. Glassie goes alright but is undersized and will gradually need to be exposed to adult footy so we need patience.

There's no one else. Attard and Brookes are both fullbacks at this stage. Maybe once they're older and fill out more they can play elsewhere too.

We have the worst backline in the NRL. And the worst backline depth in the NRL. We desperately need to sign/swap for an outside back or two in the next month.
If you have Laulilii, mason, Herbert, Tavana playing more than 10 games combined then we're just not going to be competitive.

Worst backline in the NRL when at full strength?

I said outside backs, not that they were decent.
