Luck? They had a good batch all at the right time.

We had Farah, Marshall, Fulton, Gibbs Skando, and some others all a the same time.

But elite coaching certainly would count but I can't imagine we are too far behind with this

A lot of the current Cronulla first grade squad played A LOT of reserve grade with Newtown before debuting or becoming regular first graders (they won at least one reserve grade comp). They debuted or become regular starters when they were 22 to 24 e.g. Kennedy, Iro.

We don’t seem to get the opportunity to bring our juniors along slowly

They were neck and neck on revenue before Richo came here… he has increased our revenue by some margin through increased gate takings , better sponsorships and increased memberships … have they done the sane ?

I could name 9 juniors in our squad too …but a lot of them aren’t great …why do they develop theirs and we don’t ? Elite coaching is a big factor in my view… plenty others decide to leave and are first graders at other clubs

Elite coaching goes back to investment in pathways though. Our KOE coach is a part-timer for a reason

At what age/level though? We are seemingly always hearing about the next big thing 18 yr old kid dominating the juniors … they get signed to a big money deal and then struggle to play NRL level … why the failures there ? I’m not saying that’s Benji’s job but I assume the assistant coaches should be heavily involved there if those players are in the Top 30..

Didn’t we have a good bunch coming through a few years ago that won one of the junior comps ? Most are gone or never developed to NRl level

Point is, a club like ours and the Sharks would need more than one gun junior coming through at the same time because we can't compete when buying gun juniors.

So luck may play a roll.

He's referring to Galvin, Da Silva, the Lauliliis, Mason, Craig, Miller, who won a Matts comp together and were all signed to supplementary and top 30 deals at 16 or 17 years old.

All these kids should've been signed to pathways deals, developed in lower grades instead of clogging up the the NRL squad at that age. And four years later, 3 are already gone, another 2 are definitely going next season, and the other 2 are no guarantee to be re-signed beyond 2026.

Galvin and TDS are loses but they were because of circumstances, Mason and LLs are not a great loss.

I don't know much about Craig, Miller? Are they leaving?

If thats all there is, it isn't much though?

Gambling on a 37 year old who hasn't played NRL in over 15 years while bringing a huge amount of PR & brand risk would be peak WT's. Could understand it if it was maybe 5-6 years ago but it's honestly just no where near worth the risk.

That’s the point. We signed them to NRL deals way too early & it’s hampered the squad ever since

Pretty bang on summary of where its been going wrong. I think players and manager know it too - get your start and some visibility at the Tigers on an NRL wage, then make some noise and move on after 18 months.

I have faith that things have moved a little in this department but man we need 1 or 2 more leaders.

I’d hope they have - but something tells me they haven’t.
We paid Bula on I reached potential, and now we’re doing the same with Makasini.

Even May come out and said he’s on double what the Roosters we’re paying him (pretty sure he’d still be under contract to them)

If Juniors have to wait - they’re just not doing it here.
