Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Interestingly, Xerri being referred to as a 'strike centre'. I haven't seen much of that since his Cronulla days.

Also Gould on Burton -

Canterbury supremo Phil Gould referred to Burton’s potential market value – particularly as a marquee half in the sights of Perth – last month on The Bye Round podcast.

“Over the next 18 months we’ve got to work out what we pay Matt Burton,” Gould said.

“If he plays centre, what are you going to pay him? If he plays five-eighth, what are you going to pay him? Well, he’s got some decisions to make.”

There he goes scamming again, his plan all along when purchasing galvins! And the cherry move, all in the plan!!

We're probably only paying about $50k for Junior Tupou next season as a guess (if that) as I believe Dolphins are still paying for his contract with them pre-Roosters.

If that's the case, Tupou & Madden on a combined $100k looks good business and I don't think we're paying anyone at other clubs next season.
The club refusing to match or get close to the Dolphins original offer was the correct decision.

It highlights the fact we must be paying crazy overs for most of our roster as we are been told there is very little left in the kitty to chase quality proven NRL standard players

I don't know why anyone would be upset about Luke leaving. He will always be a massive liability in first grade. He's just too small.
That's not too say he doesn't have other positive traits, but he will always be targeted in defence.
Maybe in a few years time he'll have filled out more but his height alone will always make him a target, even if he's playing fullback.
He should have been developed as a centre as he is much more likely to break tackles, make line breaks or outpace an opponent than any other centre we currently have.
He has a good catch and pass and slight of hand from his days playing fullback and although his defence would need work, he is a very willing and physical front on defender and his overall defence as a centre would be no worse than anyone we currently have aside from Taylan May.
Finding players with his strengths is easier said than done.

We have too many fringe players on too much money. Backup players should be on 150-300k, not 400-500k. It all adds up
And then we have too many players in our top 30 who are a long way from first grade

Yes and we know we have Doueihi and Twal on very good deals for us, so we are overspending on some players thats for sure.

No worse than what we currently have is the problem.

Outside of our top 17, I don’t think we have anyone above 150 - 200k so that is not the problem.
We don’t learn from past mistakes and keep paying average to good players money that you should only be paying for elite players.
Who in our team could you call an elite player ?
I would not classify any of our players as even close to elite, yet we are still somehow close to our Salary Cao capacity.
So when we do not have the class to score many long range tries and lack the ability to even look dangerous when we are in our red zone, it is nothing to do with lack of effort or lack of coaching, it is simply lack of class.

Perhaps the club plays this down so that managers of current player that we are looking to extend dont get too greedy. There is no benefit in saying yes we have a spare $1m, however there is upside in saying we are almost maxed out.

Given we've put Tupou on a T&T contract for the rest of this season but guaranteed Top 30 next year, makes me think we already have the required 30 contracted players and probably reached close to our cap for this year.

Now Luke Laulilii is included in our Top 30 for this year (to NRL). Based on what we officially know, we'd still have 2 Top-30 roster spots to fill but I reckon those have been taken by Bunty Afoa & 1 of Ethan Roberts or Charlie Murray (from our Development squad).

What are you saying mate, our club has finally smartened up, could it be after all the pre-Christmas turmoil they stopped taking the D head pills and finally are making smart decisions, bloody Norah at last we cheer.

Or Bateman & Bird. We are still paying this year so they can count if we want

Junior Tupou is still young, he has good height and size and reasonably pace for a man of his size.
He has scope to improve and due to us being weak in the outside backs, there is very chance he will once again become a regular NRL player for us.
He is not a bad signing at a low cost, BUT it has to be a concern that he may have lost a lot of confidence and belief since leaving us and only getting a few NRL games.

Heard an interesting throwaway from the agency side. They see the West Tigers as finally getting a strong handle on their cap to the point that, as of 2028, we may be one of the only clubs to NOT have a player over $1M per year.

That may change in the next 18 months if we use Luai's money to go for a big fish. But interesting to hear that we're on top of roster management for a change.

There is merit to this. Was reported we needed to move on To’a, Hunt & Seyfarth to afford Samuela in the same week jurno’s said we were also interested in signing Averillo & Watson.
