Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Yes he is quiet but he leads with his actions and professionalism around preparing himself & training. Apparently he is a good mentor.

Frizell also could straight away move into a starting prop role for us or be that experienced bench middle/edge. If an injury did occur to KPP & Samuela, his experience and defensive nous on an edge would be much better than Sione or Seyfarth.

Recently Newcastle journo Barry Toohey wrote this in his column how Frizell wants to stay in Newcastle but the club may not be able to afford him unless they can move someone on.

The problem is fitting him into the salary cap.

The Knights have one spot left in their top 30 for next season but we're hearing it's a minimum wage position only worth $150,000.

To squeeze Frizell in on a salary that he will be happy with and one that fits his standing within the playing group, it seems highly likely another player currently on the roster will have to be moved on.

That can be easier said than done.

It's understood a number of players including the likes of James Schiller and Kyle McCarthy have permission to negotiate elsewhere. But no one with a contract is obliged to leave although push can come to shove with some NRL clubs.

Frizell admits to being frustrated at the stalemate.

"I've been pretty loyal and hopefully I'm not disrespected by the way it's handled," he told us. "I've spoken to the coach and I'll keep doing my best for the team and hopefully it can work itself out."
Thought Frizell and his wife had a online business that was doing very well, and was very against to move his young family.

He is worth what the market will pay him and I agree that $5m over 4 years is good money and close to what he is worth in my opinion. Having said that I don't begrudge these guys going after the $$, their careers earning good coin are limited and they could get a career ending injury at any time....lets not get into the longer term effects of playing a high impact sport and what that means for them and their families. Maybe with Sam there are some unfavorable clauses the Roosters have inserted in his contract and its not really about the overall $ value.
$5m more than enough to set you up for life if you have some brains

Apparently hes not happy with $5m over four years.

Not happy with $5m...let that sink in.

Top tier players are getting extremely greedy imo

I hope he screws up holding out...hes hoping a premiership will bump his price up
Well...Moses is supposedly on $1.5..Cleary $1.5..Brown $1.3mill
Sam is better than any of these except maybe Cleary(whom he outplayed in SOO)
He thinks hes worth more than $1.25..and hes right and .Roosters have the $$$..and so do Broncos
The market has become extremely commercial in recent years...loyalty/one club career doesnt get highly valued

So if they get a work visa to work in Australia and get selected to play for PNG, it becomes tax free?
I'm no accountant but if u work in a country in which u are a citizen..u pay local taxes
Which are peanuts anyway
The Ox players who are domiciled in Aust..and wld pay Oz taxes..are exempted by Albo
For me..its a gr8 deal nearing the end of yr career..but as a young single bloke or with a young family..mid career..its a bit od a sell out
But that's just my opinion

To get any benefit you must be an Australian citizen eligible to pay tax in Australia. Having a work visa means you would not satisfy this criteria. There is no tax agreement of a similar nature to the stupid one the ALP provided that exists with any other country. They would be subject to the taxation arrangements of their own country and would not fall under the tax laws of Australia (except they may have tax offsets for any income earned in AUSTRALIA and taxed here).

With respect, I believe this to be wrong.

The tax free aspect that has been touted for the PNG Chiefs players relate purely to tax that might have otherwise been levied by the PNG on those player salaries sourced in the PNG.

The PNG government has agreed to this in part due to the $600M being stumped up by you and I and every other Australian taxpayer - thanks Albo.

Any players going to play in the PNG are going to need some good taxation advice. Depending upon their personal circumstances, they may find that they are still residents of Australia for taxation purposes. If that were the case, the touted tax free PNG income is moot, as they would be paying Australian tax on it anyway, and would normally get a tax credit under the Double Taxation Agreement between both countries.

Well supposedly Mitch Moses is on 1.5 million, and he is a better player than Moses

From Budget Paper No. 2

The Government will amend the tax law to ensure that income tax exemptions provided by Papua New Guinea for players and staff of the PNG Chiefs National Rugby League team operate as intended. This will decrease receipts by $5.4 million over four years from 2026–27.

No measures covering this were included in Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Bill 2026 that has already been passed, so the specifics are still to be confirmed

I found this article: https://www.theaustralian.com.au/sp...e/news-story/f54dda7c67d7093b8df7deb3f921e3cc

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo backed the Federal government scheme, saying any player who signs with the Chiefs will not pay a cent in tax for any money earned during their period of employment in Papua New Guinea.

The tax-free scheme will operate for a period of 10 years, when the Federal government’s annual $60m contribution to NRL’s PNG program comes to an end.

“There is a tax exemption for anyone employed by the Chiefs who is an expatriate, not from PNG,” Abdo said.

“It goes up until 2036 so it’s a 10-year period and that means they won’t pay tax in PNG – and the Australian government has said they won’t pay tax in Australia here.

“They (NRL players) would pay tax when they come back (to Australia) on earnings that they make here, as per normal, but the money they earn while working for the PNG Chiefs will not be taxed.

“It’s only applicable for people who are based in PNG.

“If someone is employed by the PNG Chiefs and they are living in Australia, they will be paying tax in Australia.

“So, yes, they (NRL players living in PNG) are tax exempt.”

Those highlighted lines are important. How will that be determined? Generally, if you live for 180 days or more in Australia, you are considered an Australian tax resident.

I actually think Samuela and Latu will go to the Roosters, who are releasing 6 ex SOO players over next 15 months..Tedecso,Lenui,Crighton,DCE,,Watson and Tupou...thats almost $4mill worth of cap (to normal teams)
Targeting Samuela to replace Croghton is exactly what they need, and theres a gap in the halves for Latu who has been poorly managed by us...Robbo will promise more
Farnworth to be recruited for Fullback
...and they will still have $$ left to top up Sam and others
..and thats without cheating!!
..well,someone has to take over the incumbents Mustang leases.... and el cheao rents in Bondi!!
...
Farnworth and Preston will both go to the roosters
