Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

We have been linked to players who take the word twilight to a new level, when the game is being dominated to by young athletic beasts and players with speed to burn. Iam not sure what the club views as the road forward but signing mid thirty players no matter how experienced they are will not work . The game is all about power, speed and skill. Sure you need experience but we need a massive injection of speed and skill
You think we would’ve learned from the Cleary era signing a bunch of has beens on good coin and getting absolutely squat out of them. I guess when you’re in the position we always seem to be in we just don’t have the attraction or money for the young athletic beasts with speed to burn. That said, Averillo is a good pick up.

Maybe one ....but definitely not multiple retirement village signings
If it was Frizell & Mann for 1-2 years max at good value, it’s an upgrade on Mav Geyer & Charlie Murray every day of the week.

Anyone that doesn’t like them as possible recruits, suggest some off contract players who would provide the experience, leadership & short term depth value that they provide. Good luck!

In 2 years time, ideally a CTM, Duncombe, Van Drie, Lanyon or Havea Jr will be ready but they are not yet so a Frizell & Mann would be great in the interim.

Those old enough remember the names Buettner & Sattler in 2004. Similar theory.

That’s the thing though isn’t it - they’re not coming for the lowly contract value of a Murray or Geyer..

Already 34.????
It’s a no from me
Sorry but you need a few corrections, and I say this not as a PVL booster.

He's not NRL CEO, that was Abdo. He's Chairman of the ARLC. Currently he's Interim Executive Chairman, absorbing some CEO duties until the confirm a CEO replacement. And yes the replacement might be him. He's also on leave from Racing NSW during this time, so he is actually fully allocated to the NRL.

Board members are typically not full-time, so it's not unreasonable to only have part of his time. I don't believe any of the ARLC Commissioners are full-time.

Whatever you think personally about PVL's dealings, he's certainly shrewd. It's not like he gets everything right but since he's been in charge the NRL has grown and continued to make more and more money.

For example the average operating margin for the NRL, excluding 2020 COVID, for the 5 years prior to PVL is 1.63%. The average of PVL's last 5 years is 8.35%. This is despite a reduce TV rights deal struck during the pandemic, covering 2022-2027. The operating margin may be even greater with the record deal from 2028 onwards.

So actually I was a big sceptic of PVL when he started, because I knew of him back from the Harold Park racing days (he was CEO of NSW Harness Racing for 17 years). He was known to be pretty ruthless back then - he had run-ins with local sports groups over his plans to expand and eventually sell the Harold Park land.

My current position however is I think he's a better person to have working for you than against you. He clearly knows the right people and I think his shabby appearance (at times) lends to him being under-estimated. I am certain the AFL are very wary of him. My criticism is I think PVL should be less involved in brain-storming the product, e.g. rule changes, and focus more on selling and expanding the business.

But he has runs on the board, it cannot be argued otherwise.

Lastly, in terms of being shady or well-connected, that's always been a key component of the NRL / ARL / NSWRL. Especially the NSWRL, they were often dodgy as and heavily tied into political heavyweights.
i don’t know how PVL has got to where he is. He isn’t impressive. He looks like the penguin. And on your comment that he is fully allocated to NRL, thats technically correct, however, that’s horseshit. Everyone in racing knows he is still there in the background and has his puppets in place. And he’s taken long service all whilst Ernst and Young have been appointed as administrator by RNSW over the ATC.

The ego of the guy. Have you ever seen the chairman of the ARLC in a Maccas commercial before him? No! Abdo - smart move going to Tennis.

As always you make some valid points BWG.
My concern would be Frizell will be 35y.o turning 36y.o late next year, so it’s not possible he will still have enough speed to be even considered as an edge option,, so he would be solely a middle option and even if we get a half decent season out of him next season, I can’t imagine his body holding up well enough to give us much at all in 2028 if we signed him for 2 years.
So if we signed him for 1 year at a low cost it could be a low risk signing that would be ok if we got a half decent season season out of him and no big deal if it didn’t work as well as hoped.
But I can’t see him uprooting his family and moving to Sydney on a 1 year deal on a smallish contract value.
I cannot see him at age 35 being selected as a middle ahead of Terrell, Pole, Twal, Sione, Seyfarth, Hunt or Bunty.
Bunty is probably the one he’d be replacing and I don’t think Frizell at age 35 would add more than Bunty could.
Kurt Mann is a slightly different situation as he is slightly younger, a genuine ball playing 13 which we simply do not have as an option at the moment.
Again it would surely only be a 1 year deal on a minimal contract value, but at least he is already in Sydney and he might accept a 1 year 250k deal which would be worth the risk for us.

Is Tommy Talau still unsigned for next season?
I think he is a step or two too slow for a centre or winger, but much like when he was with us, I don’t know why he has not made the switch to either an edge back rower, or a ball playing 13?
He is big enough, has plenty of physicality about his game and he was a star junior playing 6, so certainly has the ball playing ability.
IF he was prepared to give a position switch a red hot crack, I think he could be an interesting proposition.

Due to salary cap pressure at the Panthers, I believe Moses Leota is free to negotiate from November 1, I’d be definitely be trying to get him. I think we are also looking to ditch Doueihi after what happened with him recently too. I’d be trying my best to do a swap with the Bulldogs for Burton.

Yeah as much as I have talked him up as a potential, I think it’s slim Frizell would come to us as you say. I think Knights find the cap room.

Mann is a more likely proposition able to cover lock & 5/8 if required mid-game. Good mates with Brailey too whether that may be a factor.

I also think Seb Kris makes sense too. Adds experienced competition for outside back spots & coverage for centre, wing & even fullback, better fb option than Turuva.

We simply do not have enough room in our Salary Cap to even consider these types of players.
I know that seems strange when we do not have one single player that is even close to the superstar category, but it shows how much we are overpaying some of our current players.
