Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Daily Tele: Wests Tigers signing Jake Averillo has made his intentions clear ahead of his arrival in November: He wants Jarome Luai’s No.6 jersey.

Averillo, who played five-eighth in the Dolphins’ monstrous 68-14 domination of Penrith in the NRL’s State Championship, didn’t sign with the Tigers play in the centres.

When initially joining the club, it looked as though Averillo was destined to sit opposite Taylan May, helping with depth in the outside backs.

But with the dramatic departure of Luai to Parramatta following his two-year stint at the club, Averillo is eyeing a bigger role.

The versatile playmaker delivered the audition of a lifetime in the State Championship, scoring three tries, assisting three others, and breaking the line three times.

Asked whether he is coming to play in the halves next year, Averillo said: “I hope so.

“I hope the State Championship showed that. I love playing five-eighth, I played all my juniors there, and we’ll just have to see what happens next year.”

Tigers coach Benji Marshall will have a bevvy of halves options, with Adam Doueihi set to retain his No.7 jersey, while also having Javon Andrews, Latu Fainu and Jock Madden.

The Tigers also have a Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon card up their sleeve, handing one of the NRL’s best prospects Josh Schuster a train-and-trial lifeline last season.

Schuster is a big chance of being retained by the club for next season.

For Averillo, coming to the Tigers is about finding the best position for him and the team.

Last season was a tough year for the 26-year-old, struggling to get onto the field after breaking his hand to start the season, before finishing the year in reserve grade.

“It’s been hard, to be honest,” Averillo said.

“It’s been a tough year. I had a pretty bad hand injury, and I was in and out of grade after that, so I’ve definitely found a new-found respect for all the fringe players.

“Playing the late nights on the bench in the NRL, and then you’ve got to back it up and go to work the next day.”

Ha .....even he thought he was a fringe player 🤣

Sam needs to play on an edge. We struggled for a rep quality backrower for over a decade and now that we have one, we shouldn't be shifting him.

His build is much more suited to the edge where he can use his long frame to bump off halves and break the line. He is more effective out wide than he is in the middle.
If Samuela said he was interested in playing a middle role and we could upgrade him in the back row , why not ??

What’s with the weird Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon comment middle of article ? Seems to be an auto add . When ever that word mentioned.

🤣🤣 just randomly appears in many of our posts.

One thing is for sure, Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon would get rid of HBG’s debenture system 🤣

From what I have heard and this is not reliable information, big Sam wants to play in the middle. So maybe the club is trying to find away to make this possible
He said that back when we first moved him from prop to second row. Looks like his hope hasn’t changed. With how hard it is to get dominant props and a lot of second rows hitting the market it could be a good situation if we can get an elite one. Also maybe it’s part of resigning him, moving to prop.

You are completely ignoring what everyone is saying. No one wants to weaken the left edge. Its basically talk that if we got Nsemba, Nanai or Martin, then Sam would kill it in the middle. No one is saying play someone like Sukkar left edge and move Sam to the middle.
Yeah, I think you've got that right.

Just thought I better say that before Tucker calls you out. 🤣

Quite a few pushing Twal into the front - 102kg. Not exactly a dominate prop, attack or defence.
Sam - 109 kg and a possible equal to Twal, maybe better? Definitely more upside.
But unless Sam is replaced with a top shelf replacement [eg Liam Martin] he is stuck in the back row.

No I’m not - you might be…
I’ve read here I don’t know how many times, that Sam is a prop playing back row
- or he’d be better suited to move to prop. he’s not a prop, and might work there - but is not proven there…
My response with his stats was on response to that.

You all might be looking to pay the best part of a million dollars to find out - I’d rather buy a proven prop.

The back rowers you mentioned are all top tier, as is Sam. Will all cost more than 750k and May is already on that or better.
Lots of money thrown at hypotheticals.
