Coaching speculation kills Segeyaro signing
The mess at Wests Tigers has cost the club the prized signature of match-winning Cronulla hooker James Segeyaro.

I’m hearing that Segeyaro was all set to sign with the Tigers a couple of weeks ago - and would have been a great recruit for the club.

But the uncertainty over the future of coach Ivan Cleary at the time saw Segeyaro’s management baulk at the prospect of joining the club.

The Sharks star is now tossing up between the Bulldogs and the Knights, with Cronulla unlikely to keep him.

Other players have also doubtless taken a similar approach to Segayaro, steering clear of the Tigers.

Cleary has committed to the club for next season, but the way rugby league works, he could still end up at the Panthers.

And if he is not at Penrith in 2019, he will almost certainly be there in 2020.

Do we have a source for this and if we do can you include details rather than just posting out of nowhere. Thanks.

Plenty on here singing the praises about how our management have handled the coaching debacle.
Well it is now starting to affect the club and time is now past to put any speculation to bed.
Tell Cleary to come out and say what he's doing now so we can decide whether he deserves to be driving the bus any further.

The abilities and performance of our management are over stated on here. A few pet memberships have got a lot of people excited.

A coach with a year to run on his contract is not the same as a coach who might have signed with another club.

Almost every single new recruit goes to a club knowing the coach only has a short term contract. They go knowing that if all goes well that coach will be renewed and life goes on.

Its absolutely nothing like the hypothetical situation of going to a club where they **know** the current coach is leaving to join another club at the end of the season/contract.

I'm not sure players are spooked by a coach moving on in a year or 2\. It's more to do with the fact it just will not go away that Ivan will not be here next year ( and no, that's not coming from media outlets) which if that is what is going around footy circles, would be enough to make players steer clear. It's one thing to sign a contract for something that may change in a year or so, but to sign it now unsure who your boss will be when you start is completely different.

This is all probably BS…....but till Pascoe or Cleary and preferably both come out and start making some public statements other than a poor 30 second prepared press release this crap will not go away. Guys damage is being done, a little bit of honesty goes a long way

Agree.. Been saying this for weeks… Until they come out and actually answer questions and give some honest answers this will only get worse... I have had enough of this and the people that think that it is not effecting anything need to get there heads out of the sand..

I don't see how the Segeyaro rumor has any legs to it. If Robbie retired then yeah, maybe. Chasing Segeyaro doesn't make any sense if we've re-signed Farah.

Apparently The Dogs whos coach is off contract next year is preferable to us…but we lost his signature due to our ''coaching mess''

Yeah right...some people will run with anything

It is 100% bollocks.

Just like Woods leaving Tigers to go to a stable club, a stability which lasted about 5 minutes.

Correct

That's all cool, but the Ivan Cleary situation is none of the scenarios that Patriot suggested. Dean Pay factually and literally has 1 year left to run on his current contract.

Ivan Cleary factually has 2 years to run.

You may speculate that Ivan may not be coaching Tigers in 2019 or 2020, but it is speculation only. You can just as easily speculate that Dean Pay won't see out 2019, especially after the Dogs overall results and the recent Mad Monday debacle.

If you are a player that turns down a contract based on speculation, then all well and good - be prepared to turn down very many offers because rugby league is constantly full of speculation.

Now if Ivan signs for Penrith in 2021, then fair enough, players have more certainty that he is leaving Tigers than other coaches whose current contracts run out in 2020\. But none of that yet exists.

Did you miss the word hypothetical.

The issue is Ivan hasn't come out and confidently said he will be here next year. Any fool can see their is doubt in his voice.

He needs to come out and say something like "I love it here, I want to be here, we are moving forward and have a great future". If he did that it would give the fans and players a lot more confidence of his motivation. His words have been said with no confidence and look like a prepared statement every time and that he is more or less filling this contract because he has to.

Bennett and the Broncos have felt the need to confirm he will only be here until 2019 seasons end 4 times

Fans need reassurance , sponsors need reassurance ,footballers need reassurance , players managers need reassurance …..

You can see by the Forum's reactions that it is pretty split what is going on ........probably the same across the rugby league community

And who will it hurt .........if Cleary is staying it shows strength and unity .......if not we need to sort out the future plans

And those comments by Cleary were made a week after he met with Penrith and said he'd like to join in 2019, starting this whole mess. I'm surprised so many people still have faith in Cleary's word and think he wants to see out his contract. I'd be shocked if he was here next year.

As long as he lives out his contract, and we are prepared for his departure, i am all for him leaving tbh

Willow closed the thread on Ivan Cleary so now people are hijacking this thread to continue the tiresome speculation.

Can't we stay on topic please ? This is getting tedious.

Well maybe threads shouldn’t be shut on topics people want to talk about.

I’m all for strict adherence to forum rules but maybe those that insult should be banned and threads kept open for those of us that can discuss issues without resorting to pathetic and immature name calling

Seggy would have been a good signing , I doubt Farah/Liddle wil cut it and it could really blow up if Liddle gets more time or the starting spot.

And the circus continues. This will be so much fun over the off season.

Keeping JT in that off season cost 3/4 big four. We lost the first few games and then punted him and it was too late by then. Let’s hope we learnt our mistake from then.

Smartest comment I have read in a while.
