Something will give with our squad sooner rather than later imo. We can’t go into 2020 with almost every major signing from last year on the outer. I don’t think any club can have that amount of money not on the field. Guys like Packer, McQueen, ET and Reynolds. Not all will be offloaded, but it would help if one or two are. There’s no way all 4 can be on the books next year if Madge refuses to pick them.

The question is how much of their salaries we'll be paying while they play elsewhere. No-one is going to take 100% of any of those deals off our books either because they think the players are worth it or to do us a favour.

Personally I'd be pretty surprised if anyone was prepared to offer more than about 300k a year for Reynolds at this point. Matulino might get the same or a shade more. Taylor, Packer and McQueen would barely be worth a minimum salary bid - even to do that another club would have to think they justify a roster spot and that has to be a major question . That would give us something around a million dollars of cap room back but with five roster spots to fill out of it plus any contract upgrades we've given out.

I wouldn't be expecting marquee signings even if we unload the lot of them, basically. Once again, we've wasted far too much of the cap on duds and we're knackered until those contracts expire. I wish people would remember that next time they bleat on about "established first grade" signings.

Geez, there's pessimism and then there's you.

Sure no one is going to pay full freight for any of our players, but they're worth more than what you think.

I'm not pessimistic - I'm realistic. I think the club is going in the right direction in an awful lot of ways. Unfortunately, success on the field has been set back by a couple of years by another series of terrible recruitment decisions. I'm impatient like lots of other people here, but I'm also aware that there's no short cut. We need better juniors and better recruitment, and with the former a couple of years away and the latter impossible until we clear a bunch of dead money from the cap we have to acknowledge that being much better than 7th-12th in 2019 and 2020 is unrealistic.

Let's look at the five players mentioned as other clubs would see them.

**Packer**: Serious injury question marks. Hasn't delivered anything on the field for a year and a half. Low minutes, low metres "pack leader" type who might not suit the modern game. Might be worth a look on a one year "prove it" deal if it's cheap enough.

**Reynolds**: Serious injury question marks. Game based on running but an ageing body and one that's taken a battering. Plays a position that requires consistent form and fitness. Might be worth a short-term deal to fill in for injury elsewhere, say, or while a young player establishes himself. Not one to build around or devote significant cap space to.

**Matulino**: Well down on impact - have to ask whether he is past it. Might be worth a year to see if there's anything left.

**McQueen**: Has barely played for two and a half years and hasn't impressed when he has got on the field. Like many ageing small back rowers seems fundamentally broken. Would probably just chew up a top 30 spot. Could conceivably be worth a minimum salary deal if you value experience but most likely no value here at all.

**Taylor**: See above re small back rowers. No longer has attacking impact. Multiple concussions, frequent injuries. Might be worth minimum salary as cover as effort can't be faulted when he gets on the park, but definitely not one you want in the starting 17.

Amen brother ..... you do realize that this thread is the WT supporters "Waling Wall".
You would think we are the only club with supporters that have not got similar problems.

We are the club that has had longest between finals appearances, though. Am I supposed to pretend that Packer and Reynolds are going to lead us to premiership glory instead of acknowledging that we're stuck in mediocrity until we can clear another round of dud signings off the books?

But you clearly know Nazing😊 only spoke to you for the first time last night and can see you are simply trying to get inside info. Just not sure id be doing so much moaning & groaning as an adult lol... but go ahead Guacamole.

Mate are you trying to make enemies? You’ve been here two seconds and you rip and tear on everyone. I’ve got no beef with you but respect the fact everyone has a point of view.

I have been giving Pascoe the benefit of the doubt as I don't think he has done much wrong, but if he is letting Benji and Robbie decide if they are playing next year then I am switching sides in regards to him. For starters neither should be playing next year, both were unwanted by their previous clubs 2 years ago, both were signed for 2018, they have both got another year they were not expecting in 2019.
We surely are not just letting these pair get their game numbers up, Pascoe just said Reynolds is not going anywhere, then bloody well play him, and the others who are not going anywhere as well need to be in the shop window or earning their coin

@851
I think that view is a bit short sighted.
Both are legends, and if they stay on next season will be entitled to the NRL 'legends pension' and so will not affect our cap.

What??? - I'm guessing this is tongue in cheek. If not TIC what are you talking about.

But you clearly know Nazing?

I'm going to explain this to you one last time as you're fairly new here. This is a forum where everyone can express their opinions. This is not a cheerleading forum. If you want everyone to just support everything the club does then I suggest you look for a suitable forum elsewhere. Furthermore, you don't have the right to tell me what I can/cannot say. If I want to criticise the coach i'll do it as much as I want. If it offends you and start to feel a little sad then I suggest you block me or mute me or whatever you need to do to make yourself feel better.

Now, on the evidence that I have seen the jury is still out on Maguire. To date there is nothing that suggests to me that he's a supercoach. But i'm not writing him off either. If he can get this team running well then I will be extremely happy.

As for Pascoe, well, he pleaded guilty to not understanding the rules and therefore accepted a punishment. As a business owner, I can tell you that not understanding the rules that govern your industry is a massive fail in every sense of the word. Was he hard done by? Possibly, but that doesn't excuse him from the fact that he didn't understand something that was KEY to his role.

I don't want any inside info from you whatsoever and after this I'm not going to engage you on any post moving forward. If you are an adult then I'd hope that you'd have the willpower to do the same.

oh wow, so you all know this? hard facts? do you really even know what went on behind closed doors?

If you can enlighten me on where I was wrong then please do so. I'm all ears.

I didn't mention one bit that you were wrong, I may have inclined it to be so... apologies - until we know the full story then we should hold off on the judgement... Go wanted to fight the NRL - two in the WT board back stabbed her... Pascoe gave in because of it... so do we really know the whole story about Pascoe? I don't, so I reserve my judgment (I probably wouldn't even know till I die)

Anyway, going back to this forum - sorry to digress from the topic.

IMO we are 7 starting signings short of a top 4 team.

I think we are only 3 or 4 away from a top 4 squad. Imaging the Trbojevic brothers in our squad. That would push us very close.

I was imagining that the other day, some may call it daydreaming, but wow what a difference they would make

What legends discount, Rowdy is eligible as a long serving player, not the other pair

Yeah, waiting to see what Robbie and Benji are doing is crazy. But then again we waited a week to see what Mannah wanted to do aswell.

If re-signing Marshall on buttons persuades Reynolds on 800k to look elsewhere I'll be the first to call Pascoe a genius.

Farah and Marshall are doing nothing for our future development, Liddle is getting bugger all game time and Grub is playing reggies, these pair have been picked in the run on side every week they have been fit, and that can not continue in 2020 if we want to move forward.
We have the QLD U/18 hooker for next year, they need to sign Liddle and these 2 will be our hookers, I am sure they can get a half from Canterbury Cup or QLD Cup to cover an injury to Grub next year, it is time to let go of the old, and I mean old boys brigade and move forward

A few too many afternoon ales. Good idea though isn't it?

I don't know what you are on about, first you mention a legends pension for Farah and Marshall, I assume you mean the allowance for long serving players, that both Farah and Marshall are not entitled too, only Rowdy, so maybe you have been on the liquid lunch

@Tiger_Steve I didn’t disrespect him... he clearly knows nothing as questioned me whether/if I had a source for Packer’s injury when it’s as common knowledge as Farah’s deal.

Don’t try and get up in my grill maybe I wouldn’t have made an enemy of you previously. IIRC, we still had a respectful convo and agreed to ignore each other from then on, so yes... obviously no beef if I’m stating facts for where my opinion is formed and he is also free to disagree. You say I’m ripping and tearing everybody? Who??

Nice blow in, totally unnecessary but here’s hoping we get an uplifting result tonight
