Suggestion......
I understand Harry Grant is under contract next year for Melbourne but we need to do everything in our power to at least have him the 2022 season! The coaching instability and incoming turnover of players may tempt Harry Grant away from the storm, and he already knows his style of play fits perfectly with Madge as he’s literally coming second in Daily M points as a rookie
Throw him all of Reynolds contract for 4 years
800k on a 4 year deal offer that in November, if he commits I doubt Melbourne would want him for 2021 knowing it’ll then sacrifice them losing Brandon Smith also which they would want to avoid
Hands down the best prospect right now in the NRL imo, easily has the ability to captain this club for the next decade - you can tell Madge knows this, and definitely fits the mould of a player you wanna build the club and culture around!
Grant is contracted to Melbourne for 2021 and 2022 seasons..no approach can be officially made until Nov 2021 with a view to signing him from 2023 on wards unless he was given permission by the Storm to do so...by then he will be 25 and probably commanding upwards of 1m+ should his development continue on the upward trajectory..
Relevant to this, it all comes down to Cam Smith anyway.
Lots of scenarios can play out:
My view is if Melbourne don't win the comp this year, he'll go around again for Bellamy's last year as coach and we can snag Harry due to the clause in his contract.
If Smith retires, Harry may decide he doesn't want to share the hooking role and wants to play 80 mins week in week out. He may ask Melbourne for a release and we get him.
Brandon Smith may play lock to make way for Grant and we lose him.
There might be a trade deal involving Momorovski and other players on our roster (Simpkin?).
The most important thing is making the bloody finals. Unless we make the finals, I can't see Harry wanting to stick around to be honest.
Second to that is recruitment. If we can pull off some wins in that area, and make the 8, then we'll be in with a shot.
Despite the above, we need to remember...Melbourne would have released him immediately if their intention was to let him go at some stage. The reality is, they "loaned" him to us so he could get first grade experience. Every week he kills it for us is another reason the Storm are going to want him back, so we need to expect that there is an 85% chance he'll go back to the Storm at seasons end.
The flip side is the Storm may open contract negotiations early to work out how much Harry will cost them. If it's not going to fit into the 2022 cap, then they may just release him.
Put it this way, we'd need to throw a lot of cash at him one way or the other. Storm have a huge amount of players off contract in the next couple of years including C Smith, so they'll have cap space for him, but what will B Smith command?
Can you really have 2 big money hookers sharing the role?
Will B Smith devalue himself by playing out of position to make way for Grant to get more money?
If the Storm are forced to make a choice, will they go for Harry, a player that has been in a totally different team, or B Smith that has the benefit of a full season under the Storm structure?
....there's lots more to play out yet.
