The NRL has proposed to keep the top-30 roster system amid fears that up to 100 players could be lost to the game due to smaller squad sizes – although players will have to take a pay cut of around 10 per cent next year.

The NRL held a meeting with the 16 chief executives on Wednesday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald, to go through how players will be contracted for the 2021 season and the knock-on effects of COVID-19.

Fears that the current top-30 system for each team could be reduced by as many as five spots as a cost-cutting exercise to help balance out some of the money lost because of the shutdown and lack of fans.

However, the NRL has instead opted to keep the system the same, conscious that such a big change so late in the current season would not give clubs the necessary time to adjust.

It also gives the myriad of off-contract players hope of continuing in the NRL with clubs now having clarity on the situation.



However, the current salary cap of $9.5m will reduce by almost $1m per team in order to ensure no jobs are lost.

The proposal is yet to be signed off by the RLPA, but will go to its members this week to gauge their reaction before the contracting changes are officially ratified.

Maybe it's just me but I'd like to see Grub go back to the Bulldogs. They guy clearly loves them (and to be honest, he's genuinely tried to be whole-hearted with us too) and it would be good to see him finish his career there. Maybe with Foran on the out it could happen?

I wonder if Tamou's presence could spark Packer into some form.

I think that you would need a few sticks of Gelignite to spark Packer into anything.

Sam McIntyre to be submitted extension this week.
If we can release a few “undesired” players & $$ is freed up there won’t be much more movement.

Stanies and Hetherington would round off a great recruitment drive with Tamou and JAC. My only weakness I see is that backrow is still not where it should be. Garner is too inconsistent - misses to many tackles, does not do the hard yards and to be is not hitting the unders line like he was doing last year. I am hoping that Blore is being groomed to our other 2nd rower for next season after a good pre-season.

Blore is being groomed to be the perfect partner with Luciano, building confidence/fitness to be an 80min 2nd Rower & run with a 3 prop bench plus Liddle/Simpkins sharing role.

With Tamou and likely JAC coming as well, can't see another big bucks player fitting into the cap and with the hookers mentioned above, seems that Harry is a no go regardless of whatever Smith decides.

Seem to remember reports that he was tempted with big dollars to go to the cats, so would expect he would be on decent money with WT.

Mayby we are backending JAC and Staines and that would spend some of it. Plus we have Aloia, Blore, Liddle, Nofa off contract and all will be looking at upgrades by then or if for example Liddle doesent work out we can pay for that position

You left out Brooks?

Rather than advertise them as a package deal or a buy one get two free, why not ask them if they want say 70% of their contract figure to walk? They’re doing nothing for team morale by hanging around the joint, but encouraging others to watch half a game while getting paid big bucks.

Brooks won’t be leaving in the off season.

Well you don't hear the crickets much ... and I hope you don't consider a pass mark game against a ravaged Manly side as a good game.

Huh . This is my whole problem with the Brooks hate. The unrealistic expectations the people who don’t like him have for him . He played well , end of story .it wasn’t a pass mark he won us the game . That’s it. When does his kicks , moves the team around , the team wins but he doesn’t get the accolades . That’s a pass mark .
