Silent snub for gutted Shark

WESTS Tigers coach Tim Sheens has banned his players from talking to dumped prop Bryce Gibbs in the lead-up to next Sunday's grudge match against Cronulla.
Gibbs will start his life as a Sharks player against his former club in front of an expected sell-out crowd at Leichhardt Oval.

"Sheensy doesn't want them talking to me," Gibbs, 27, said. "I guess he thinks I am going to try and stir them up a bit."

Gibbs uses the words "gutted, shafted, and devastated" to describe how it felt when he was told he was no longer wanted by the Tigers after nine years at the club.

"I found out they didn't want me when I picked up the paper," Gibbs said.

"That is when I found out I was getting shafted

''The paper report said the club was punting me, Liam Fulton and Chris Heighington, but I didn't know what was going on''

"It wasn't a joke though because it was true. It was pretty embarrassing and devastating walking into the gym that day.

Gibbs was a member of the 2005 premiership winning team and had designs on playing his career out with the Tigers.

"I was gutted," Gibbs said. "I wanted to play for one club. I grew up following Wests and it was hard. I lived just down the road from Campbelltown Stadium and I didn't want to go anywhere."

Gibbs played out the 2011 season knowing he was a dead-man walking.

I fought, but at the end of the day I couldn't do anything," Gibbs said.

"I was just in denial at the end of the year. I pretended it wasn't happening."

The City Origin prop has no doubt the events which saw both him and fellow prop Andrew Fifita sign with the Sharks helped to ruin the Tigers' season.

"I have no doubt it was affecting the team," Gibbs said. "They can try to deny it and hide it as much as they want, but they were trying to cover it up."

Now settled at Cronulla, Gibbs claimed the move may be the best thing for him.

Fit and firing, the 108kg prop is preparing to recapture his top form with a side he thinks can trouble the best.

"I thought if they don't want me then I will go to the Sharks and prove them wrong. I want to show them they made a mistake," Gibbs said.

"And I love it here. It is certainly a bit of a change, but it is a good environment and everyone is very close.

"I think we have an exciting team and we showed that in the trial.

"I think there are no excuses this year. It is all or nothing for the Sharks and we have to deliver."

Good chance that its true, because i remember when the story broke that Gibbs and Fulton had been linked to the Sharks and we were all scoffing at it, someone posted one of his tweets where he said something along the lines of 'haha i guess i'm going to the Sharks'. So I don't think he'd be too far off

I read the first line and thought - "Betcha its a Daily Telegraph article"

Completely shocked by the time I got to the bottom of the article. I thought long and hard about the article and this is what I came up with -

"Have a cry mate."

I get the feeling the ill will that both Gibbs and Fifita are harbouring are supposed to ignite a fire in their bellies for the game on sunday.

I remember what happened when Penrith made the shock selection of Daine Laurie in their line up against our mob a couple of years ago, and he let in about three tries… the same thing could happen here.

I wish Bryce the best, but think he'll have a really mixed bag of a game against us. 1 or 2 big hits, followed up with 2-3 penalties for our boys.

Yep, time to move on and next Sunday Bryce will be the enemy. I'll be cheering when the boys put him on his arse.

On a side note, how much exposure do the Sharks get from the DT. Is this normal or have I only noticed due to it's content relating to the Tigers?

If I was one of our players I'd tell Sheens to get stuffed, they can talk to whoever they want off the field.

A lot of our squad would have long lasting friendships with Bryce (obviously) and I am sure they are professional enough not to let those friendships detract from their performance on the field.

They all know Bryce better than anybody and if Bryce has some jokes to get under their skin I'm sure it would wash straight off their backs.

Theres always texts, twitter and FB
Im sure they'll get a work out

Its the Sheens way or the highway at Wests Tigers… I think the Princess Hwy goes via the Sutherland Shire?!

Maybe, just maybe Sheens knows Bryce well enough as a player to know what unsettles him and gets under his skin, he has shown in the past he takes that onto the field and performs poorly.

We owe Gibbs nothing until about 5pm next Sunday.

I wonder if Sheens flat out barred them, or whether he just told them not to antagonise/bait/stir up Gibbs.

Easy enough to cross wires and suddenly a common sense plea turns into a "I heard Sheens banned them from talking to me" situation.

If Gibbs found out that Sheens doesn't want our players talking to him does that mean somebody has gone against Sheens word and spoken to Gibbs?

This would probably be it.

I always remember Munding giving Melbourne a rev up back in 2000 before the storm played the dragons.

The Storm came out and put on one of the most brutal displays of footy i'd seen to date, and mauled the dragons 70-10.

Spose sheens doesn't want gibbs and fifi playing out of their skins, and rightly so.

I'd say if there is anything to this, Sheens could be concerned about Gibbo get under our blokes skin, or more likely getting them to lose focus….more than our blokes antagonising/bait/stir him

if they want to annoy Bryce Gibbs on the field, and Fafita as well.
when he does tackle a wests-tigers player, get up and say, " is that all you've got, what no penalty gee you're slipping", then smile at him and play on.

I'd say its just a journo trying to make a story out of nothing.
Gibbsys lemon was squeezed dry ,who would you rather ,Gibbsy or Blair ?
Its a no brainer.Bring it on Brycie. Fifita wont bite us on the bum, the refs despise him and he always gives a penalty as soon as he comes on the field . watch him run sideways on sunday and get smashed.

The disturbing thing about this story is the CEO Humphreys, who I call the 'Fib' blatantly lieing to GIBBS. I know for a fact the story surrounding Chris HEIGHINGTON and Beau RYAN is much much worse with the 'Fib' doing deals behind their backs with Phil GOULD and Beau RYAN finding out back stage on the Footy Show from FATTY that he and Heighno were going to get sacked from WT. People ask me why I dislike The 'Fib'. This is why. The Wests AGM last year is another reason. What he said is on record.

In a nutshell, five players were lied to, to there face, whilst they were being shopped around behind their backs.

That is an absolute disgrace.

One player (Moltzen) was told to his face by The Fonz that he did not rate him as a first grader. Well he was a top half before Fonz stuffed him up by playing him at fullback.

Fonz has ruined many a career the same way. I love Wests Tigers more than anything, but I greatly dislike The FIB for his constant untruthfulness, and the Fonz for the same reason and his ineptness as a coach and as a man.
