Tigers stand by Dwyer as nerve tests threaten end to booming career

"Our singular focus right now is on Simon's well-being" … Stephen Humphreys.

WESTS TIGERS officials say they will do ''everything possible'' to assist stricken forward Simon Dwyer with his rehabilitation from nerve damage, which doctors have said is likely to end his NRL career after 35 games.

The Tigers confirmed yesterday that Dwyer would likely have nerve graft surgery in coming weeks, which would be followed by a ''long and challenging rehabilitation''.

It is understood doctors have told Dwyer, one of the most promising players in the game, he is unlikely to play again following the interpretation of results of conduction tests last week.

Dwyer had suffered nerve damage against the Bulldogs in Round 16, and still does not have full movement in his right arm and hand.

''Whilst his future remains uncertain, Simon continues to be very positive, and his great courage and the strength of his character are an inspiration to us all,'' Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said in a statement.

''His family and friends are providing him with wonderful support, as are all of his teammates. Wests Tigers will do everything possible to assist Simon's recovery from this devastating injury. Our singular focus right now is on Simon's wellbeing, and so we all need to be patient and take things one step at a time. That's the way Simon is approaching the challenge and that's the way it has to be.''

Dwyer said in the statement that he appreciated the support of club officials, including the coach, Tim Sheens. ''During my hospitalisation and rehabilitation, he has given me great support through regular visits, phone calls, and has also gone to the extent of researching information on my injury,'' the 22-year-old said.

Dwyer will almost certainly have the surgery - which involves grafting the damaged nerves in his right shoulder and arm with nerve tissue from another part of his body - although Dwyer's family will seek more opinions and might consider alternative techniques.

It is unclear how the development will affect Dwyer's teammates, who have won three consecutive matches and are looking to consolidate a top-eight position.

They have already dealt with the retirement of Kiwis winger Taniela Tuiaki after repeated complications from a 2009 leg injury.

Dwyer has become a popular member of the squad, as well as an important on-field asset.

Terrible news, still can't believe it. Hope he at least gets feeling back in his arm so he can live a normal life i.e pick up his future children etc.

What an absolute tragedy …...... this young fell had state of origin/kangaroo selection marked all over him.
In other words the rugby league world at his feet.

I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery and that his dream of playing football again will be fulfilled.

I share everyone well wishes. Such a talented player and I remember Sheens saying that he was the best junior he has seen since the great Bradley Clyde.

I don't care if he every plays NRL again. I am more concerned that he is able to have a quality life and regain movement back into his arm.

All the best with your recovery. Keep your chin up.

At least he has done what many of us dream of - running out in a Wests Tigers NRL side.

With the terrible news still sinking in for many of us, I hope it does not seem too soon to start considering this… but now that the worst possible scenario looks likely in regards to Simon Dwyers injury - at least for a year or so - how best do we move on without him in our back row ranks?

Do we have enough youngsters coming through to cover the loss, or should we be looking around for another talented back rower? Surely he will free up a couple of hundred k??

I think we just upgraded his contract prior to this injury. i am not sure what he would be on but if his contract was upgraded he would have to be on 200K or there abouts

Jason Schirnack should be given first crack IMHO. Agreesive runner, big hitter in defence and he and Dwyer were at the same level in NYC.

Dwyer will still be paid but it will not count under our salary cap as there is the allowance for long term injury in the cap rules

Back three:- Ellis, Blair, Heino.

Ayshford, Sironen could fill in at lock at a pinch. You also have BMM and Groat who could play 2nd row.

Are you sure about that Smeg? I know that there have been a lot of complaints about the injury allowances and it's being further revised this year.

I could find out any info on the net about it.

I think that the injury to Dwyer is a perfect example of where the allowance should be used.

Likewise with Cherrington from the Roosters doing his ACL in the preseason

This season : Fulton is doing a great job playing on Dwyer and Lui's side 2012 Blair will play that side I am guessing .

Moors will be released i'd imagine, I think Blair comes in directly for Dwyer, Fulton heads to the bench, with the likes of BMM, Shaun Spence, the shirnacks being the back row depth.

Galloway, Woods, Groat will make up the front row rotation with Bergovich as the back up.

Bell will fit in as either and prob relieve the young guys who will most likely struggle to go week in week out at this point.

Think the pack will look something like this

13\. Heino
12\. Blair
11\. Ellis
10\. Galloway
9\. Farrah
8\. Woods

Fulton
Groat
and one of Bell, BMM, Bergovich or a bolter

At this stage I'd be look to something like this for a starting forward pack and interchange bench:

8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Ellis
12\. Heighington
13\. Blair

14\. Bell
15\. Murdoch-Masila
16\. Fulton
17\. Begovich

The interchange bench is a mix of experience, size and youth while that forward pack should match just about any in the comp IMO.

U have to be kidding right? he plays close to 80 minutes every game and is still going strong in the 79th minute of every game making metres and being a great inspiration for the rest of our pack and team, he gives 110% untill hes busted black and blue…so before u start thinking of next year keep ya eyes pealed on what heino will be doing for us leading upto and IN THE FINALS

Groat is still eligible for the NYC and will not be rushed. I'd use him in the event of injuries. Otherwise I'd give Begovich a run ahead of him as they both play a similar style and Begovich has the better motor at this stage.

I actually think so too.
Fulton IMO could be a ball playing lock.

8\. Woods
10\. Galloway
11\. Blair
12\. Ellis
13\. Fulton

8-12 are all big players and carrying a lightweight like Fulton wouldn't make our pack too small.

Also,

14\. Back
15\. Heighno
16\. Bell
17\. Begovich/Groat (Surprised we haven't seen Begovich in 1st grade yet)

Reserve/20's

Begovich/Groat
BMM (depends greatly on his preseason)
Moors

typing this up, I realised we don't have that good a depth in the forwards as I thought, have i missed anyone?
